Speaking as someone with an actual mental illness, please don't attribute shit like this to mental illness. People being hateful and vindictive does NOT mean they're mentally ill and attributing it to mental illness just adds to the stigma that the rest of us have to deal with.

Emeryn, thank you for putting this so politely (and thanks OP for editing). I try to keep my bipolar somewhat out in the open to help remove stigma, but it's a hard road.

I do the same. I don't hide the fact that I'm bipolar because I hope it makes it easier for those who come after me. But it definitely isn't easy.

Yes! My husband has bipolar 2 and is in a stable management position at a company where he has worked for 12 years. Don't add to the stigma, especially when we already face one for being infertile!

I saw that. Thanks. Mental illness is so misunderstood and I think it's so important to not attribute all undesirable behavior to it.

I've already apologized in four separate places. I've also got a diagnosed mental illness, so I really don't know what else to tell you.

Edit: Also, I can't change the title. Being called a fat cunt, whore, and even a nigger was also pretty hurtful and messed up, but you seem to be more offended that someone would be calling an unstable person mentally ill. I know mental illness has a stigma attached - because I suffer from it too - but let's not pretend that there aren't fucked up people with mental illness that isn't properly treated. People don't just go around spending an entire 24-hour day calling other people niggers because they're mean. They do it because they're sick and need help.

For what it's worth, I have severe anxiety and OCD and I was not offended by your post or title. Sometimes people with mental illness DO act in undesireable ways, and I don't think it's bad to acknowledge that. Just as sometimes people without mental illness act in undesireable ways. I also think that sometimes when people snap like this they very well might have mental illness or at least deep-seated insecurity, or they may not, but I don't think you deserve to get jumped on.

Hell, I give people with (your average, roan of the mill) mental illness (with which I have personal experience) major props because they tend to be more sympathetic and empathetic.

And thank you, SO much, for understanding my frustration.

My heart rate has been high all day. At first it was because of the troll this post is about. Now, it's all the people mad at me not accepting my several apologies. That shit is frustrating.

I have an incredibly hard time wrapping my mind around how some people can be so cruel on the internet. I admit that I can be vicious. I was a bitch to someone in this very thread - but I only do it if I feel attacked and any appeals to get them to lay off don't work.

Let's face it. Confident, secure people with high self-esteem don't feel the need to bully people.

I'm not so sure about the last bit, unfortunately. I think it's a misconception that "people bully because they're insecure themselves". People bully because they like to have power over people.
