5 Things More Likely To Happen To You Than Being Falsely Accused Of Rape

1 in 4 women will be raped or sexually-assaulted in her lifetime, but instead of working on solutions to this problem that effects everyone, some folks like to derail the conversation by claiming false rape accusations are widespread. And because it’s such a sensational thought, women are often accused of lying when they come forward about their rape or sexual assault. But using statistics from the FBI and Department of Justice, it’s estimated that on an annual basis, the odds of the average straight man (the target group overwhelmingly concerned with this) in the U.S. being accused of rape are 2.7 million to 1. To put that in perspective, here are five things more likely to happen to you than being falsely accused of rape. posted on Jan. 9, 2014, at 12:21 p.m.

1. 1. 5x as Likely to Win $10,000 in the Powerball Lottery (1 in 648,975.96)

Okay, not quite 5x as likely but close. If you’re a man who is fearful of the odds of coming across a woman who will accuse you of rape, consider that buying just one lottery ticket a year gets you closer to winning $10,000 than you’ll ever be in danger of the former.

2. 2. 750x Times More Likely to Die From Alcohol Poisoning (1 in 3,598.05)

The Center for Disease Control estimates there are 88,000 annual deaths from alcohol poisoning. Based on our projected current population of 314 million, the odds of dying from a way-too-fun night dramatically outweigh the odds of being falsely accused of rape.

3. 3. 11x More Likely to Be Killed by Asteroid or Comet (1 in 250,000)

Think a big hunk of space rock isn’t likely to kill you? You’re probably right, but that’s far more likely to happen than being falsely accused of rape. According to Prof. Stephen A. Nelson of Tulane University, you stand a 1 in 250,000 chance (lower limit: 1 in 3,000) of being killed by an asteroid or comet.

4. 4. 631x More Likely to Become an NFL Player (1 in 4,278.06)

Yes, you are more likely to play professional football than be falsely accused of rape. In 2013, there were 254 individuals selected in the NFL Draft and 1,086,627 boys played 11-man football in the US. Those numbers have been, more or less, similar for the past decade.

5. 5. Men 82,000x More Likely to Be Raped (1 in 33)

We end on a serious note. Because 1 in 33 men will be raped in his lifetime, men are 82,000x more likely to be raped than falsely accused of rape. It seems many of us would do well to pay more attention to how rape culture affects us all than be paranoid about false accusers.

I know there's going to be a shit storm after this, but really, thank you for doing the math on this.
Its sad that we live in a world where we don't take rape victims seriously.

Mallory La Squirelle its not true.. more resent studies that asked both sexes the same questions got back that women are just as sexually aggressive as men the only difference is how our society views a woman raping a man or boy. And women do false report more than this article is claiming watch this video she explains it perfectly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnJwEFQUdPs

Kimberley Morse nice job using a logical fallacy to back your argument. she clearly lays out and uses university studies and points out the flaws in how they did the research did you even watch the video. If you did why not point out the flaws in what she is saying rather than just saying she does not know whats she's talking about because she's a waitress, and she's also and writer and activist.

And this is why sexual assault isn't taken seriously among some people; because of the misinformation (1 in 4) continuing to be spread on bullshit articles like this. Quit white knighting Charles Clymer, and educate yourself on legitimate, FACTUAL statistics and sources instead of feminist propaganda. You're a disgrace to humankind.

Umm... Can the Blogger say where he got this number from? Because I've been falsely accused twice, and I have 4 friends who have been falsely accused as well. Yes I'm 100% sure there were all falsely accused, I was there each time. How the hell would you even get these numbers?
        • Rachael Tyce Appold · Top Commenter · Resident Advisor (RA) at JMU - Office of Residence Life
From studies done by the FBI and department of justice, as the author stated. And 5 people(including yourself) being falsely accused does not mean that false accusations aren't uncommon. Only 8% of accusations are false. You got a lot of false accusations which is terrible, but it's not reason to believe that this happens often.

Rachael Tyce Appold That's why I asked for links o the numbers. I never said my personal bias proves anything, I would like to see numbers and the methods used to generate them. 82,000 times more likely to be raped than be accused of rape sounds like made up stuff. Also the 1 out of 33 number is wrong. Or that website is using really old numbers for a specific reason, I don't know what however. I'd still like to see where the numbers for the 82,000 more likely came from.

Were the accusations done legally? As in you had to defend yourself in court? Somehow I seriously doubt it.

I would understand people's grievances with this article if:
        1) they didn't quote statistics from the courts and government - the same ones that result in a high number of rapists walking free. It's one thing saying one person you know was falsely accused of rape, it's another to imply that means the law is just and that many victims are not in fact made out to be liars.
        2) there wasn't a focus on gender. I think the article made a good point with male rape. This isn't a game or some battle between the sexes. the media have been guilty of victim blaming and it's time the
fear of being falsely accused is put into perspective.

What the fuck? So using a source of fact which you deem unreliable is worse than making outrageous and utterly false claims wwith no source or evidence at all?

You are a special kind of stupid aren't you, This article isn't only wrong, but its wrong on so many levels thats its hard to know where to start.

You would realise how utterly retarded the claims made in this article were if you weren't so knee deep in your victim mentality that you actually looked for evidence and fact rather than just accepting everything that conforms to your delusional view of the world.

FYI according to the FBI up to 40% of rape claims are shown to be false... Do you understyand this number?? that is almost half of all rape claims

Darryl Worthington Where did you get the idea that I have a victim mentality, or don't look for evidence and fact in case it doesn't conform to my worldview? My comment is so vague, how could I have suggested that? I didn't exactly go on a rant, like you did.
I was trying to say that the article isn't as dumb as it first appears, which is what I initially thought. It actually uses government and law statistics. The last point is especially important, because we need to realise that men are victims too and women are culprits.
The truth is, while false rape claims are terrible, they are not as common as you think and shouldn't be as feared as they are. You claim 40%, which, excuse my rudeness (I'll excuse yours), is bullshit. Across most European/American countries, the statistics fall between 2-8%, including those reported by the FBI.
I think an article like this shows we shouldn't be as concerned by false claims, but more concerned by the vast majority of cases that don't get full investigation in the first place, false or not. If the law took rape more seriously, since it is a serious crime that shouldn't have cases thrown out so easily, a lot of men and women would have a happier life. In my country, for example, only 10% of rapes against men are even reported, let alone investigated. There's a seriously hardwired mentality surrounding rape that needs undoing.

Molly Forsyth I'm sorry, But you honestly deserve that tone for thinking that anything buzzfeed posts is even remotely accurate, this site and it's youtube channel is so off the mark it actually scary.

This article may be based off info from real agencies, but it is so hilariously misrepresented that I honestly thought it was satire at first, but no, people are really stupid enough to believe this. "11x more likely to be killed by an asteroid"
Seriouysly, how could anyone with an IQ higher than the double digits believe this.

I know atleast 2 people who have been fasley accused, but strangly i know noone whose been hit by a comet, despite being 11x as likely

"If the law took rape more seriously, since it is a serious crime that shouldn't have cases thrown out so easily"

You have it the wrong way around, Firstly, Rape is t...aken very seriously in the eyes of the law, the avaerage rape sentence is 8 years.
And for comparison, my uncle, my fathers twin brother, was shot to death, gunned down, then repeatedley shot while he was dying in the middle of the street.

His killer got one year in prison. But let me guess, rape is worse than murder right? (femenists claim this all the time)

Secondly, this article doesn't show anything factual let alone showing us that "we shouldn't be as concerned by false claims", the fact that false rape claims exist is barely even noted by authorities. If anything we should be more concerned about false rape claims.

Rape is shitty and terrible of course, but being put in jail for 8 years falsely accused of rape is FAR FAR worse and far more damaging.

There is not an ounce of truth in this article so stop acting like it just exposed a profound problem in our society that was previously unknown.

Like a previous commenter said "this is the ACTUAL math"

This is actually not true the 1 in 4 number is misleading how they got that number was expand the definition of rape to things that aren't rape.. like including people who felt violated after or durning, people who regretted their choice, people who were intoxicated ect ect. They also only asked women questions about how they are victims and men questions to them being perpetrators so they set up the study to get the results feminist were looking for its standard data manipulation. people need to stop believing all the statistics that float around without checking the method it was done.

Watch this video she explains it perfectly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnJwEFQUdPs

Yes, clearly a self-titled "gender theorist" with no schooling citing bad, incomplete data knows more than the CDC, the FBI, and the DOJ. Also, you seem to be under the delusion that sexual assault only counts when its a stranger forcing himself/herself on someone they don't know. You should read up on the definition of 'consent,' as it is not legally possible to consent when too intoxicated, or passed out, or under threat of perceived harm. Also, the 1 in 4 stat clearly states that it includes all sexual assaults, not just rape. Now, by all means, call me a mangina/white knight like a typical MRA and move on.

Timbo Lampasona I'm not under that impression thanks for telling me what i know and don't. I know that its sexual assault and rape thats part of the problem. Sexual assault alone has a huge scale of crimes which can be serious to not as serious - sexual assault could be as simple as an unwanted ass grab during 2 people conversing or flirting or something more extreme. The reason the statistic is misleading is because people reading it will obviously assume its more of the extreme cases of rape and assault when that could not be the case. Which is not a responsible way to display data.

Also your views of consent is terrible. I am aware of the revised version of consent and its not a fair way to view it. If two people are intoxicated and they go home and have consensual intercourse how is it the man (who is drunk also) held accountable for what he does and the women not accountable for hers decision because she regrets the choice she made afterwards. Just because she regrets her decision does not mean she was rapped and this case happens quite often. And just because she was drunk does not mean she was rapped. Thats all i was saying towards the intoxication statement i made.

Jes Gou, I'm using the legal definition. Sorry you don't agree with that definition, but I have evidence on my side. Nice job trying to minimize sexual assault though, classic mra tactic of 'oh its not even a big deal, she probably just regretted it! Bitches be lyin' amirite?'

This is an important piece. Cultural awareness is important, especially in a climate where rape survivors are put on trial more than those accused of the assault.
