                        How easy is it to conceal a OWB mag carrier? I found a guy who does solid work on them for an awesome price, but I wasn't sure how well they conceal.

                        I wear tall t shirts for the most part. Plus, winter is coming, so it's going to be anywhere from 40 degrees, down to -50 degrees if it's anything like last year. So, I'll probably be wearing a big, heavy coat most of the time.

                                Someone ELI5 the HK pistol lineup.

                                The Mk23, USP, P2000, P30, and HK45 all seem to be hammer-fired, polymer-framed double-stack pistols, and other than caliber differences and ergonomic changes I'm at a loss to understand the evolutionary tree here.

                                From memory:

                                The Mk23 and USP were developed in parallel in the late 80s / early 90s, The Mk23 for the SOCOM "Offensive Pistol" project, and the USP as a general issue sidearm for police service, aimed at the US market.

                                10 years later, the P2000 is a warmed over USP Compact with a more accommodating grip and replaceable backstraps.

                                HK45 grew out of a project where Ken Hackathorn and Larry Vickers approached H&K and said "Hey, SOCOM pretty much just wants a 1911, how about you make a H&K 1911?" Obviously it didn't turn out that way, but it is a very nice gun.

                                P30 is a redesigned P2000.

                                I'm sure someone will be along shortly to correct me.

                                The P2k was basically a more ergonomic USP Compact, and the P30 is basically a better, more ergonomic P2k (they almost called it the P3000)

                                The USP is just a smaller version of the Mk. 23. The P30 and HK45 are updated, more ergonomic pistols. I don't know much about the P2000.

                                      I know the difference in FPS for 300blk out of a 9 inch barrel isn't that much less than the FPS out of a 16 inch barrel, but how is accuracy effected? Is a 12.5 inch barrel noticeably more accurate than a 9 inch?

                                      Except in very specific cases, mechanical accuracy isn't generally a function of barrel length. Now, if you are using iron sights, functional accuracy is generally lower on short barrels due to the shorter sight radius.

                                      Barrel length actually doesn't hardly affect accuracy, If at all. It only gives you a better sight radius, which is worthless If you are using optics.

                                          Only range nearby is a 25yd indoor range. I'm looking at a purchasing a mauser or similar (K31?). Steel core/casing is also forbidden. Would it just make more sense to stick with pistols at that range? Is it feasible to learn to properly shoot with a high-powered rifle at that distance, or should I just scrap the idea until it starts to warm up again and I have more time/daylight to head to an outdoor range?

                                          Mauser at 25 yards is going to be over doing it a bit, you wouldn't really be able to take advantage of the weapon, and the range may not allow high powered rifles depending on what their back stop is.

                                          If you want to learn how to properly shoot at 25 yards and beyond, get a .22lr like a 10/22 or one of the other billion .22s out there. As far as shooting high power rifles, you don't want to jump right into it, or you'll develop a serious twitching/flinching issues.

                                            I've heard several people on Gunnit say they feel that reticles with bullet drop markings are dumb, but I haven't seen anyone explain just why they feel that way. I'm looking into optics for my 10/22, and the Nikon rimfire BDC 150 caught my eye. I still have a LOT to learn about shooting and accuracy, but it seemed that a scope like this could help in the beginning. I know the US has similar tech on the ACOG and so did Russia with the PSO-1. Is there really no reason for me to try learning with a BDC reticle? As I (hopefully) get better over time, I can see why a simple duplex style reticle would be ideal for longer shots, after making click adjustments, I just feel it's going to be a while before I'm good enough to make use of that.

                                            tl;dr - ELI5 why so many seem to think that BDC reticles are dumb.

                                            Range markers for military rifles make a bit more sense than on civilian guns for the following reasons:

                                            • Standard grain weight ammunition
                                            • Only modest accuracy needed (ie. hit the person or near the person rather than hit the bullseye)
                                            • Really only a couple of barrel lengths to worry about

                                            Now compare that to civilian shooters:

                                            • Shooters tend to buy whatever ammo is available/cheap so there will be less consistency for point of impact, this is compounded if ammunition is mixed
                                            • Target shooting generally has more focus on hitting a single point than a general area, so a less complicated reticle can be advantageous

                                            TL;DR- They work best if you need to quickly hit a guestimated distance and stick to only one type of ammunition.

                                            Thanks. That makes sense. I'm just looking for something to help me along as I get started. First step is certainly going to be an Appleseed weekend, and I'll be doing that with Tech Sights.

                                            Nikon also provides a calculator to give better distance estimations for each mark on the BDC. Supposedly you feed in the ammo you're using, and it will crunch the numbers for you. No idea how accurate that software is, though - probably still a great deal more accurate than me.

                                            Since it's based on your specific load, it's likely to be a better approximation than the one-size-fits-all BDC reticle. No substitute for actually testing your load though.

                                            My 10/22 has a scope that has mil dots, but the problem is, they change with your zoom level, so 3 dots down at 4x is different than 3 dots at 10x, unless you have a scope that uses first focal plane. which in my experience aren't cheap.

                                            I shooy my savage at 100 all the time. Wish I had more range to play around. 200-300 is not unheard of if your not in a super windy area, have steel to report back to you, and have a spotting scope to see it arc in. I get 4 in drop in high velocity stuff at 100 yards. I just dial my scope until it hits at point of aim.

                                            BDC reticles are calibrated for a given projectile weight, barrel length and powder load - that works for for the military where everyone is using the same equipment and single hole accuracy is not expected. For civilian use, that would be fine too if you're only using equivalent equipment but everyone is a snowflake - 223 projectiles can vary from there 50s to the 70s in bullet weight, different factory or hand loads can be mild or hot - barrel lengths vary from 10.5" through 24".

                                            A BDC reticle would be fine if you want to ring steel gongs or something and your specs fall somewhere in the middle of the range but since most people are wanting as tight a group as possible, it's better to get your DOPE and know where to hold rather than have hash marks or circles on your reticle that don't quite correlate with your equipment.

                                            BDC reticles are useful for when you need to quickly shoot in the right general direction. They are not particularly accurate for a number of reasons.

                                            The trajectory of a bullet depends on a lot of factors, the obvious ones being the exact type of ammunition used and the barrel length. Another factor is how high the sight sits above the barrel. So to be accurate, the BDC reticle would have to be tailored to one specific rifle using a specific ammunition type.

                                            Aiming accurately with a BDC reticle is not very easy, since target distances rarely are at exact 100 meter increments. So aiming at something in between you will need to hold the target between the chevrons, which doesn't give you a whole lot to aim with.

                                            This doesn't matter much with modern military rifles, since these are often used in great volume, and targets are engaged with multiple shots. So as long as the range is just a rough estimate some of the bullets are bound to hit it.

                                            On the PSO-1 you actually don't use the chevrons as a bullet drop compensator for any normal combat distance. You only use the top chevron and all elevation is done with the elevation turret.

                                            The lower chevrons are only used when the turret is set to 900 meters (which is it's max setting) and the chevrons then indicate the further distances in 100 meters increments. (out to 1200 or 1300 meters depending on the reticle).

                                            Edit: just to close it off: It is a lot more accurate to adjust the scope for your specific distances. This will give you a crosshair that you just have to put right on top of your target no matter how odd the distance. It also allows you to adjust the sight specifically for your rifle and ammunition.

                                                    HK's mag release makes no sense to me, friend of a friend brought one to the range, and the mag release is ambi, but it's a lever that you have to push down, and this lever goes down from the trigger guard, so in order to eject the mag, I have to break my grip.                                                                                         Was bored this weekend, so I bubba weighed trigger pulls on 2 of my rifles. My Ruger .270 has a weight of ~6lbs 5oz and my AR (milspec trigger) has a weight of ~7lbs. 3oz.

                                                                                        The ruger has little to no creep and the AR has a ton of creep. Is it weird that I like the AR trigger better because of the creep I have a better sense of when it is going to break?

                                                                                        I do have plans to replace both triggers.

                                                                                        The bubba method to trigger weights. Find metal coat hanger, empty gallon of milk. Hang empty container from trigger using coat hanger. Fill container with water until trigger breaks. Weight container and coat hanger for trigger pull weight. Do this a few times, avg. results. Not very accurate but I payed $0 for something I will probably not do again.

                                                                                        Milspec AR triggers are widely regarded as trash, but it doesnt matter if you get to know your trigger and weapon and get used to when its going to break. You are correct. My savage mk ii non accutrigger is also trash, but I know exactly when it breaks so it doesnt affect me too much. Weapon familiarity is king to being a good shooter. Super nice triggers only matter if you are that good of a accurate competition shooter where you are outperforming your rifle, and you know for sure the trigger is the issue. Any good shooter should be able to apply rhe basics of good shooting to any rack grade rifle with any ammo and be competent, and that would include working with meh triggers. Also your trigger weight method is lols. I suppose you could also use like a fish weighing spring thing and pull till it breaks, if you have fishing gear.

                                                                                                      The AR is supposed to be a .308 rifle - - for an example of what a Eugene Stoner 5.56 gun would be; look at the AR-18; he didn't bother with a buffer tube recoil system or DI system in that rifle; because the 5.56 cartridge doesn't greatly benefit from straight gas-recoil flow like a .308 does.

                                                                                                          So I'm sending in my form 1 soon on that PTR PDW. While I wait I would like to start work on a wood forearm which has to be shortened. I can't seem to find someone selling just the forearm, so I would get a stock with it. The PDW has a segmented guide rod so it actually can't use a standard G3 end cap with a normal guide rod. I have to buy a new end cap and guide rod assembly to attach a stock that allows the gun to work once I get my form 1 approved. If I buy a wood furniture set would it be considered constructive intent despite the fact the gun can't use the stock?

Constructive intent isn't really a thing, Constructive posession is What the ATF would get you with, but it is only used to beat people with more sticks once they get caught doing something worse. Basically, if you pay the government enough money, you can legally build or own any machine gun you want. I was under the impression that full auto RPK kits were nigh impossible to find stateside, but like i said, money makes the world go round.

It he built it before May of 1986, then he could be OK, assuming he got his stamp in order before building. If he has his SOT and the proper documentation, he could build it now and be perfectly legal. It all depends on stamps, documentation, and licensing.

                                                                                                              Should I get a dedicated weapon light like the Streamlight TLR-1 HL for an AR, or get a regular flashlight and a mount?

                                                                                                              The TLR-1 HL has no low power mode for indoors. The splash from high output would negatively affect my ability to operate operationally in a house or apartment. Part of me just wants to put a regular TLR-1 on for that mode, because it would look so tight. But a Nightcore E20 would be as bright with other modes available.

                                                                                                              I've done it both ways and strongly prefer the dedicated weapon light on a long gun, especially if the regular flashlight doesn't have an easily activated latching on mode. A G2 in a 1" ring was cheap and worked okay as long as you only wanted momentary activation, or were OK with taking your hand off the gun to twist it on all the way.

                                                                                                              Primary Arms' weapon light is actually decent for the price, though.

                                                                                                              I have a TLR-1HP and it's really not that bad indoors as long as you mostly use it as indirect light -- as you should be doing anyway -- by aiming it at floors to light up an area. Then when you see an actual threat, you can aim it directly at them and let them taste the lumens.

                                                                                                              If you're still concerned, the plain TLR-1 is not a bad way to go either, and you only lose some throw distance outside.

He's been a helpful guy on the project and we've had the time to talk shop a little more. However, he is still an amusing source of Fudd gun wisdom.

                                                                                                              I comment aloud on Primary Arms' Halloween savings and lament that since I have an Aimpoint PRO and magnifiers are overly heavy, I don't have many options for longer-range shooting short of buying another rifle.

                                                                                                              Ricky's solution: I just need some decent irons and a scope mount that lets me use them. He then proceeds to Google peep sights and "Dragunov sniper" as an example of what he means.

                                                                                                              So, we're looking at an AR-15 with tech sights and a Russian-style side-mount scope (it will be hard to find a gunsmith willing to tap a railed upper receiver for a side mount).

                                                                                                              How high must a side-mount be to clear A2-height sights? I comment that the cheek weld would be ridiculous. Ricky asks what is "cheek weld."

                                                                                                              I spy a nice used Winchester 94 on Facebook and express an interest in an affordable older lever action like a Win 94 or the Marlin 336C.

                                                                                                                        Very unlikely, even if your headspace is off you'll just be destroying brass instead of blowing up your face.

                                                                                                                        Check to make sure the gun isn't stamped "DP", look for obvious damage, and make sure the bore is free of obstructions. Enfields are pretty tough guns.
