    One time, a person called Zap out on being an asshole, and Zap banned them. I reported Zap to the other mods. Two mods said they would un-mod Zap, and they were just bullshitting assholes who, instead of giving me a real response, just pretended like they were listening. Zap proceeded to message me an ASCII goatse, and then both Zap and Hce proceeded to harass me through the modmail-not even through a PM, but through the fucking modmail that every other /r/guns mod could see-and then ban me from the sub, even though I NEVER FUCKING POSTED ABOUT THIS IN THE FUCKING SUBREDDIT. And yet Zap and Hce are still both moderators.

    Fuck you, /r/guns moderators, you useless assholes.

    To add a little perspective: r/firearms has now just about as many members as r/guns did when hce was made a moderator. Those good ol' days were only like two and a half years ago. I remember joining r/firearms after having a personal spat with hce when he started generally being a dick moderator, similar to what zaptal is currently doing. There is no stopping them once they go god mod. There weren't many members here then, but now that the equivalent critical mass has been reached, it will be interesting to see how things develop here.

    The thing is, this sub has a much more laissez-faire moderating policy, which is much better for the sub. /r/guns has so many idiotic rules and they only allow the same boring posts over and over (Look at my AR! Look at my Glock! I'm special!) and if you break one of the rules, or even bend it a little bit, your post will be removed and you will probably be banned. Whereas with this sub, /u/hydrogenous is NOT a complete power-hungry dickhole, and allows actual informative posts. So because the mod doesn't have as much power on /r/firearms, I don't think he'll go all /u/zaptal_47 on us.

    Everyone said I'd need to change my mod policy at 10,000 sub's... Then they said 20,000... I really don't think it'll be an issue unless we get a LOT more traffic. 5x more.

    The autofilter for spam is pretty well "learned" at this point so unless someone asks me to I usually don't even go into the modqueue.

    If something needs to be deleted or fixed or whatever, just PM me. I get a notification on my phone or tablet and can usually resolve it instantly.

    Other than that, your down votes will suffice to control content.

    it is purely based on rank. a moderator can remove mods added after them (further down the list), but not before them (above them on the list). if you want to remove mods above you, you'd have to make a request over in /r/redditrequest.

    He won't. I was invited over here back during the hce going dick event and there hasn't been anything to piss me off about the modding in r/firearms the entire time.

    That's exactly why I think it'll be interesting to see how things develop from here forward with this many members. I remember that this many members is when things really started changing over at r/guns. The r/guns mods complained as loudly as they could that their strong moderation was what made r/guns popular. Ironically (or maybe just logically) their "strong" moderation has helped r/firearms become popular.

    Having only been a gun owner for about two years now, let me tell you in case you've kind of become numb to it: there are more assholes and anti-social autists amongst gun owners than probably any other hobby besides video gaming.

    You could make an entire sub dedicated to sharing stories about, oh, the guy at the range who just sits there and talks about all the shit he has that's nicer than your shit, and can't take the hint that you don't care, or the condescending dick at the gun store who makes fun of a woman buying a handgun because it's "too big for her", or the casual racist who unashamedly is just standing in the middle of the store with his buddy loudly talking about which one of "Obama's negroes" is going to take over the Department of Justice.

    All three happened to me in the last few months.

    I tried complaining to the mods about sexual harassment on one of my posts and got harassed through modmail too. zap was a huge dick about it and started spewing sexist shit at me, one of the other mods literally said "welcome to the internet" in response to zap's behavior, and then they threatened to keep modmailing me for months. I just blocked all the mods. I apparently pissed them off really badly because SIX MODS replied. Some choice quotes from the replies include "Maybe you should stop being a cunt." Then when I asked to be left alone: "One time someone asked that and the replies lasted for 9 months. Is that really something you want to have said?" And then after continuously messaging me: "You sure like to pretend you're being harassed."

    I tried reporting them to the admins but the admins are fucking useless.

    Seriously though, those mods are living in a pillow fort with a "No girls/homos allowed" sign on it. There was a poster last year that asked if people would be accepting of him and his boyfriend going to a range together to get some training. The mods banned him and left "LOLFAG!" before deleting the other comments. They are not the ambassadors I want for the gun community.

    Yeah. I contacted the guy and offered to take them to a private range and shoot my guns at no cost.

    I apologized and tried to assure them both that the mods there are just assholes and not a good representation of the firearm's community. I did see them at the range once after that so I hope that they have had good experiences since then.

    A while back I posted (what seemed to me to be) a perfectly average text post question. Within minutes I was given an official warning by HCE and when I asked politely why in PM I was told my post violated the rules and to fuck off, and was banned. I asked in modmail why I was banned and the others supported his actions. Glad to be gone.

    The worst part of it is back in the day Ironchin and sage were so awesome. So helpful, all I had to do was pm them and get a helpful and complete answer to questions.               Apparently the OP took longer than 15 min to post a descriptive comment to go with his album (that was descriptive inside the album), and the bot commented saying the usual "add a description or it will be removed."

              Someone replied to the bot saying it should be slowed down so people have more time to comment.

              Zaptal replied to that guy saying something along the lines of "fuck you. it's slow enough already."

              Then more arguing, and Zaptal going pretty overboard with the aggression, and then banning 5 or 6 people.

              That's the last I saw of it before the sub went private. I'm not going to comment on who was right or wrong, but I will say I hope the sub doesn't stay private for too long because that's my go to source for time wasting.

              I have no idea. I'm not super knowledgeable about how random stuff like that works with reddit. I think the mods will probably (hopefully) make the sub public again soon. I wonder why they made it private though. If they were really concerned about the brigading, they could have just nuked the thread.

              If it doesn't go back to being public (which would be stupid), then they would have to approve each user before they could submit to or view the sub. Which would suck

                  Guy posts a link to an album of pictures of his rifle after it exploded on him today. Before he can finish writing the description in the comments (as required of link submissions in /r/guns), one of the /r/guns bots posts that he needs to post a description or else his post will be removed. Someone posts a comment saying that the bot needs to be slowed down a little to give people more time to write their description. Zaptal47 (one of the mods of /r/guns) flips his shit and cusses out the guy who posted the comment. Other people comment telling Zap to calm down and that his response was unnecessary and childish. Zap goes on a banning spree and bans 5-6 people just for telling him he's overreacting. /r/guns is now private.

                    While it is somewhat amusing to watch /r/guns implode, I unsubscribed from that sub for a reason. I don't want to see /r/firearms turn into a sub that is nothing but posts about drama going on elsewhere.

                    The best thing we can do is to distance ourselves from /r/guns by not referencing them or getting involved - that includes telling ourselves how much better we are.

                    That's just my take on this mess, not that it will count for much. I like this sub and I don't want to see it go down the same path /r/guns took.
