"Hipster" designs are not "Aztec". Your iPhone case is not "Aztec". Your backpack with the ~tribal looking print~ you picked up at Target is not "Aztec".

The term "Aztec" refers to a number of certain ethnic groups of central Mexico, particularly those who spoke the Nahuatl language. The Nahuatl word "aztecatl" means "people from Aztlan". Often the term Aztec refers specifically to the Mexica people of Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City.

So no, if your culture does not celebrate Dia de los Muertos, it is not right to walk out in a Dia de los Muertos-inspired costume during Halloween because you thought the art is cute. It is ignorant, disrespectful and complicit in erasing a rich culture and identity.
