Korea staff ad row just a mistake, says retailer Alice’s Diary owner Hyoju Kim

THE Sydney retailer who appeared to have broken the state’s anti-discrimination laws by putting a “Korean Staff Wanted” poster in her shop window said it was a misunderstanding caused by her poor English skills.
Fashion and beauty boutique Alice’s Diary owner Hyoju Kim said her sign was poorly worded and she simply wanted staff who could speak Korean. “It was not my intent to imply that only Koreans seeking employment would be considered,” she said.
The sign had drawn the attention of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board after The Daily Telegraph reported that the CBD shop turned away two non-Korean job applicants. Board president Stepan Kerkyasharian said the retailer may have breached the Anti-Discrimination Act by discriminating against potential employees on the basis of race.
But Ms Kim reiterated that she just wanted Korean speakers. ‘‘Due to the nature of my business and the customers I cater towards, being able to speak Korean is extremely beneficial,” she said.
“At this point in time, the members of my staff are lacking in this aspect which is why I am seeking Korean-speaking employees.”
Ms Kim said her grasp of English is “quite poor” and she is trying to improve.
“I understand that despite Australia being a multicultural society, English is the primary language and a certain fluency in the language is something I look for when interviewing potential employees.”
Ms Kim also said since the article a number of “scary people” had abused her staff.

I think this is complete BS........... Employers should be allowed to hire anybody they want and need for their business. This is not about being "racist" but who wants to see an Indian working in a Korean Restaurant??? Who wants to see a Caucasian working in an Indian Restaurant??? Not only Restaurants - If it is a retail shop targeted at a certain race, you would want to have the same race work at the shop to make the customers feel more welcoming as their are people in Australia that struggle to speak English. Comments such as, if they cannot speak English they should leave the country, is far more racist than these acts of hiring certain race. What's the difference between advertising on their own community website for jobs, which Caucasians cannot view without knowing the language, and having them posted on the window of their shops? NOTHING... Discrimination / Racism occurs far more from the Caucasians but I don't see them being charged - think about all the poor Asians who was brought up in Australia, but because of their name, the resumes don't even get read properly (like myself). If regulatory bodies have time to investigate in these minor issues, they should invest more time into issues that actually matter.
For someone who claims to have a "quite poor" grasp of the English language, her quoted statements are very well phrased.
There's no excuse for not being able to speak English, especially if you are running any kind of business in Australia.
That is what I said yesterday-innocent mistake and overreaction;give it a break and go and chase Obeids
Not a very smart business woman. If she is looking for Korean speaking staff maybe she should have written the sign in Korean.
