So Giant Bomb hired two men, and announced it. Samantha Allen was one of the many people who tweeted, criticizing the decision. She gets harassed by a ton of Giant Bombers, though Giant Bomb blames reddit and 4chan. The GB Founders have spoke out against it. Samantha Allen announced she was leaving games journalism.

Why does this keep happening?

Because they're persistant, that's why. They crusade. They bully and harass until people comply and they can keep the status quo the same these - these - Anti Justice Warriors.

Giant Bomb is a popular gaming website with a lot of support found here and amongst the gaming community. They actually do a lot of good work and coverage. Though I subscribe to their podcast (the Bombcast), I have to say it's a bit long. Their staff is full of white guys.

Samantha Allen is a freelance journalist who mainly works for Gamespot. She is also a trans woman. She has taken some flack for talking about diversity in gaming.

Samantha Allen was amongst the many people who criticized GiantBomb for their two new hires - more white guys - announced yesterday. There is nothing inherently wrong with the hires themselves, but in the context of a discussion of the lack of female or minority representation amongst staffed (note: not freelance) games journalists, which has been happening for the last week (Basically since Tom Bramwell's "I am Sexist" piece in Eurogamer, in combination with Patreon's recent announcment of investment from a VC). This sparked a backlash noting the lack of women on Eurogamer's staff as well as minority writers sharing how they depend on Patreon - a crowdfunding source - to supplement their freelance income, and therefore a long discussion over twitter and other places about the lack of minority staff in games journalism.

So - in that context - the Giant Bomb hires was a dissappointment for alot, among the critics was Samantha Allen.

Suddenly, Samantha Allen's inbox and twitter account was full of harassment, private email and phone harassment, and the rest. Again - she wasn't the only one doing the criticism, her status as a minority made it worse. This is also not the first time for the GB community to do this (note these are the alleged propagaters - actually a brigade brought about by reddit (tumblrinaction, gaming) and 4chan (/v/)- but there's a lot of overlap). Leigh Alexander, also began writing about her experience appearing on GiantBomb's video cast drunk (note, it's not irregular for male games journos - including the hosts - to show up to the same show drunk as it fits their rambling).

After receiving so much harassment, Samantha Allen announced her exit from Games Journalism.

Edit: It should be noted that Giant Bomb's founders and staffers have all come out against the harassment.

Over the last week or so, most of my RTs were about this subject. The space in time between Giant Bomb's announcement and subsequent quitting of Samantha Allen was less than a couple of hours yesterday.

Zoe Quinn has replied to a few anonymous asks on tumblr about this tonight as well, comparably you'd imagine she has a huge foot in the door given her coverage in the last few years and in terms of name recognition and being generally well liked by the supposedly SJW gaming press but she can't get a shot either. No, don't just let them pretend it was some legitimate question when she and everyone like her has been living in this reality where websites will talk the talk occasionally but when it comes to anyone getting hired they back the fuck down and hire another white dude because they value their shitty community that's always angry at them for being "SJWs" 10000x more than the values they supposedly hold. Gaming is an outcast medium, a lawless place where the majority of fans are entitled white dudes with nothing to lose and no consequences to fear. Gaming is based almost entirely on the concept of power fantasy: teaching the player that they are the most important and capable person in the world, that they are always right, that they are the best at whatever it is they choose to do. It's no accident that gaming has now become a bloated mess where dissenting opinions are dogpiled with rape threats and violence threats, with no real possible counters. Gaming is a snarling pack of wild dogs, and what's the best you can expect to get out of it? A slightly more inclusive indie platformer? In response to Allen's anger and disappointment, a person replied that perhaps the two new hires were "the most qualified people for the job". This is a joke. He didn't mean it like that, but it's a joke. The idea of "the most qualified games-opinion-giver" is a joke. It's a farce. It's a comedy of errors where we get to see milquetoast white dudes stumble through shooters saying things like "yeah this handles okay" and "hey I shot that guy in the face, that was pretty good". This is a task that requires the most capable and highly-trained white dude possible. This is a farce.
