But there is also a difference between beating the shit out of your child and an occasional spank or a slap on the cheek when he has really done something wrong. It happened to me and I turned out pretty well. Of course when it happened I got explained what I did and why I should not do it again afterwards.

I've only ever been spanked once and I don't even remember it.

Apparently it was because I tried to run around in a parking lot when we were getting back to our car, so I guess I never did that again, which is good.

I'd rather be spanked than dead under a tire.

I've been spanked twice in my life, and you can be damned sure I never did what caused it again. Am I wrong for thinking that that kind of discipline is not child abuse? It's gotten pretty vilified lately, but I and most my friends have gotten disciplined like that, and we've all turned out pretty well.

I was kind of a brat in my teenage years. I crossed the limits once or twice. Got slapped hard the second time and I never ever did it again. So yeah parents don't need to do it but in case of "emergency" it really helps. It wasn't unneeded. This is the difference between raising your child, teach him not to cross the limits and child abuse, beating the shit out of him just because he forgot to buy bread on his way back from school.
