Welcome to Britain.

In the UK, "garden" can also simply mean "yard".

In the UK, we often don't have room for huge gardens, so we have to make do with what we have. This is the foundation for a garden based on potted and patio plants, as far as I understand it. We don't really use the word "yard" in the same way you do so I don't know about that.

Yeah I had some. Confusing talking to a British friend. To us American the word "garden" is used exclusively for the area used to grow plants that are neither tree nor grass. In England the whole thing; lawn, trees, brick path, fence, it's all called the garden.

My yard measures three yards by three yards.

your post made me ponder in what kind of hellhole would one "yard" be a proper measure for a yard

I think the Olde English word "geard" meant a wooden beam. This meaning is still preserved as as nautical term: a horizontal beam for supporting sails on a ship.

How that very old version of "yard" got turned into a measure of 3 feet, or a lawn/garden/green/whatever... That's hard to say. Maybe people used to build fences from salvaged ships' parts?

How tall is the screen? Great work.

Yeah I kind of expected, just because it doesn't have any plants it's not a "garden" but the screen is 6ft6" high made out of rhombus shape baton just so the neighbours can't see through

This is gardening.

It's almost winter In The northern hemisphere so this is a garden getting prepared, I expect there will be plants here.

This sub reddit has far too much hey look at my tomatoes I grew and not enough what do you think about this space I created.

Do you think soft or hard leaved plants would work well here? What about a vertical wall of edible plants? Gardening is more than plant care, the side bar should be amended to include landscaping

It's not ironic to post something in the wrong subreddit.

There is a certain irony in calling a soil-less patio/yard a "garden," as a lot of people do in the UK. It could be called ironic that to some people, "gardening" is essentially the opposite of what it means to others.

There is absolutely nothing ironic about this post. Please check your closest dictionary for the proper meaning of ironic.

I think your definition of garden is a bit different from ours.

I can't.

It's possible it could be the British definition of garden, which is what Americans would call a yard. It looks like OP has fenced and and paver'd their back yard.

No milkshakes... Does not compute

I agree, but to be clear this is 'gardening', not 'gardens'. In British English what does gardening mean?

yardwork?

Tending to one's outdoor spaces. That could mean planting edible or ornamental plants, as well as caring for the entirety of your outdoor space.

I honestly don't understand why there's such hostility in this tread regarding this.

What is the difference between posting pics of your tomato plants or sunflowers and posting pics of how you care for and renovate your entire outdoor space?

Hostility is a bit of an overstatement. I don't see much hostility, mostly just people questioning if this is the proper subreddit.

The difference is the stated point of the subreddit in the sidebar encourages one but not the other.

Not everyone has 10 acres, a top paddock, a lake and a lower field to work with. OP has clearly posted what he has to work with and what he's done with it so far... Don't be a dick.

This is not the proper subreddit for this post. Nobody said anything about 10 acres, but his 'garden' is devoid of plants. This is a subreddit about growing plants. The only person being a dick is the person who started calling people names.

Richard

That's a pretty blinkered view of things. A patio is an important part of very many gardens. When I look at this GARDEN I see a paved area, but not just that, I can see the potential for a myriad of potted plants like this. That plot, too, started out as just a patio. And just because it doesn't contain plants, doesn't mean it's not a garden.

There are more things in Heaven and Earth, nothingsexual...

I'm just saying, this thread is a hive of snobbery from people who can't imagine the possibility of being confined to a patio like this and having to make the best of it. As far as I can see, OP has posted what he's starting with and moving on from. What in the world is wrong with that?

Language barrier!! In American English the patio is never part of the garden. The garden refers exclusively to the area that contains plants(but not trees or grass or patio).

I disagree. Living in America I've heard plenty of people say garden patio, referring only to patio and not the grass and trees outside of it. And further people calling balconies gardens sometimes, and of course those haven't got any grass.

I live in America and have never heard someone call a balcony a garden.

I am not questioning the use of the word garden, I am questioning if the post fits the purpose of this subreddit. From the post title none of what you say is stated nor implied. I simply pointed out the point of this subreddit, and you retort with hyberbole and name calling.

Frankly I think you give the op too much credit, judging by their post history of begging for attention on gonewild and posting pictures against the intent of that subreddit. Its more likely they took a picture of a patio and fence, saw the name of the subreddit, thought that the word garden has a universal meaning, disregarded the point of that subreddit, and submitted.

shrug I didn't look at their post history, I just used my imagination and my knowledge of cultural history, taking into account the fact that not everyone here is American. As I said in my second comment; "garden" doesn't mean the same thing to everyone in the world.

you plan on planting bodies in there?

assuming they're 2x4's and there's 30 of them, that thing is five feet tall

About right for a garden fence, then.

[–]JimsanityOSBZone 5 Illinois (don't say the 's') 1

9.9 feet tall, assuming they're 2x4's. A 2x4 is 3.5 inches wide, and it looks like there's a .5 inch gap in between each.

3.5 x 30 boards = 105

.5 x 28 spaces = 14

14+105= 119 inches

119 inches / 12 = 9.9 feet
