Welcome to Britain.

[–]Zebba_OdirnapalUS zone 7b 22 ポイント23 ポイント  (9子コメント)

In the UK, "garden" can also simply mean "yard".

In the UK, we often don't have room for huge gardens, so we have to make do with what we have. This is the foundation for a garden based on potted and patio plants, as far as I understand it. We don't really use the word "yard" in the same way you do so I don't know about that.

Yeah I had some. Confusing talking to a British friend. To us American the word "garden" is used exclusively for the area used to grow plants that are neither tree nor grass. In England the whole thing; lawn, trees, brick path, fence, it's all called the garden.

My yard measures three yards by three yards.

your post made me ponder in what kind of hellhole would one "yard" be a proper measure for a yard

[–]Zebba_OdirnapalUS zone 7b 9 ポイント10 ポイント  (1子コメント)

I think the Olde English word "geard" meant a wooden beam. This meaning is still preserved as as nautical term: a horizontal beam for supporting sails on a ship.

How that very old version of "yard" got turned into a measure of 3 feet, or a lawn/garden/green/whatever... That's hard to say. Maybe people used to build fences from salvaged ships' parts?

I was only joking, but I appreciate the info anyway. upgeard to you.

That's an area of 9 square yards! Yay math I'm smart.

[–]SimonWest 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's a potential garden. It's not there yet, but it will be! the patio is a foundation that dreams will be built on... Right, OP?
