I always thought this was kind of unfair to vegans... nearly every time you eat, you end up bringing it up, just as a practical matter (like asking if a particular ingredient is vegan). I think as vegan food becomes more accepted and more well-labeled, they won't have to be so obvious about it. Which will be a nice thing for everybody!

Its just old when people ask:
"Oh what are you ordering?"
"The veggie sandwich"
"Veggie sandwich? No meat?!?"
"I..uh don't eat meat"
"Fucking militant vegans always spewing their vegan ways at the drop of a hat!!!"

Working with a lot of Indian vegetarians and being a pescetarian this comes up a lot. Depending on where they are from in their country, they seem to have a different idea of what meat is. Only cows are meat. Only mammals are meat. Birds and mammals are meat. Any animal is meat. One of them ordered beef pho when we went out for Vietnamese food, and told me it doesn't count if its not an Indian cow.
In some instances I think they define it by whether or not there's visible meat in the dish. So broths, etc would be fine, but a burger would not.
Ha, that's interesting. I guess some regions have relatively generous definitions of "vegetarian."

Seriously. I never broach the subject unless I'm asked or invited to eat something. And then I brace for the 20 questions that everybody inevitably asks...
Some people are offended at a basic level that someone doesn't eat meat, animal products, etc., even if they aren't being proselytized to become vegetarian
I honestly stopped caring about responding to people's questions after hearing the same 10-20 asked over and over by hundreds of different people over the last 10 years.
I now just say "Its my personal belief" and that generally shuts up the questions.
But in all actuality why are people vegetarians or vegans
This. The idea of someone else being vegan is in itself offending to some. Maybe it's because it makes them think about their own choices, and in their mind they offend themselves or prepare themselves to be attacked, becoming defensive.
I find it so awkward how people can get defensive when I've said absolutely nothing about them, all I did was ask the waiter if there's cheese in this or that.

I went out to a Carrabba's one night with family and was ordering between their soup, all I asked was "Is the minestrone soup here made with meat stock?"(Because there are a few restaurants that serve minestrone with meat stock) They said they would go back and ask.
About 10 minutes later the server came and said "There is no chicken or sausage or cheese in the soup, just vegetables. We don't really know the difference between vegetarian and vegan."
I said: "I didn't mention anything about being vegetarian or vegan, I only asked if it was made with meat stock which is a liquid made from meat."
It was as if their whole kitchen got offended that I asked that question and none of them really knew the answer. Luckily their website listed the ingredients for the soups.

Ahh yes the 20 questions game.
"So how do you get protein"
"Oh so do you think animals are like people?"
"Wait so like can I eat meat in front of you?"
"Oh so like does that mean you don't eat insert obvious meat product?"
"Wait so you don't? Then you must only eat salad and grass"
"So then do you eat Insert obvious non meat here"
"Wait so does that make you like anorexic?"
Edit: yes these are all questions I have personally been asked.

Seriously. Sometimes I just wanted to respond to the question "Really, you're vegetarian??" with "Yes... And to expedite the inquisition I'm positive is about to follow... No, not even eat chicken. Nope, not seafood either. I get it from nuts, beans, lentils, and all the thousands of other veggies. No, I don't crave steaks/chicken/hamburgers all the time. No, I'm neither tired all the time nor anemic. No, I don't feel bad for eating broccoli even though it's alive too. Yes, if I were on a desert island and had to eat a fish or die, I'd probably eat a damn fish. Yes, I suppose if everyone was vegetarian, cows and pigs would take over the planet and we'd all die. ...No, not even bacon."

Of course not! Personally, I don't find anything wrong with asking questions, or even having a full-on conversation if you're genuinely interested. It's more the negative, prying attitude from some people that gets really old. Like they'll just keep asking different iterations of the same thing because not eating meat is so fucking weeeird and they can't imagine not eating chicken evar!! So they try to find exception clauses or poke holes in your moral philosophy and share every negative story they've ever heard about being vegetarian, etc. If you're not doing that kind of shit you're cool in my book. It's a pretty low bar, I think.

Man, as a non vegetarian, most vegetarian food looks super weird. I certainly don't know how to make FANCY vegetarian food. I think it's reasonable to ask for recipe ideas.
specially with the context of "dinner party", yeah, if the main course is a chunk of meat, you don't want a plate full of side steamed veggies (though most vegetarians might actually be ok with that!), it makes sense to ask what would be a "fancy" dish to fill up the plate.
To answer... if its a dish that wasn't prepared with egg/milk/meat-broth, just make extra of it, we'll gobble it up
It's super easy. I think the big misconception is that you need some version of the meat, so like Tofu is where most peoples brains go and that can be a little tricky to cook, but really if you can do a bean dish or a rice dish, or best of all something with both beans and rice you're pretty golden.

I honestly don't think he did. The person cooking was ignorant on the subject and knew he/she was ignorant. The person had no idea so asked a question. The person doesn't seem like they are trying to be insensitive, they just have no idea.
Here's my point:
No context in terms of what she's making everyone else, what kind of food the person likes, what things she likes to cook herself, what ingredients she has available, just... "What is the food that a vegetarian eats?"
There's no problem with someone saying "I'm having a dinner party and making indian food, what's good and vegetarian" or "My vegetarian friend loves pizza but i only ever make meaty pizzas, what's do you like on a pizza as a vegetarian". A great question would be "what are some dishes/cuisines that can be easily adapted for omnivores and vegetarians?"
Just saying "what food will my vegetarian friend like" without offering any context is kind of a dumb question. It's the kind of thing that comes from people who'll also ask "if you don't eat meat, what do you eat?".
I also think a statement like "most vegetarian food looks super weird" (which I'm aware someone else made) is just.... You realise being vegetarian only removes ONE INGREDIENT off a plate? It's not spacefood! If you make a pasta without meat in the sauce, it's vegetarian. If you substitute a beef patty with a veggie pattie in a burger, it's vegetarian. If you order a salad without chunks of meat in it, it's vegetarian. If you order a steak, your sides are 99% guaranteed to be vegetarian. It's just not that hard.

Just because you eat a few meatless meals does not change the fact that we eat thousands of meatless meals. We of course will come across more questions than you. Your anecdotal evidence has nothing to do with hundreds of lemmings I come across that regurgitate the same questions over and over.
"Why don't you eat meat?!"
"How long has it been since you haven't eaten meat?!"
"Do you eat cheese?!"
"Do you eat eggs?!" "But eggs are BABY CHICKENS?!?"
"Do you mind if eat meat in front of you?"
"Do you want a bite of my burger?" "But if I eat your food and you eat my burger instead then its not like any extra meat is being eaten?"
"What do you mean eating meat makes you sick?"
And yes, when somebody asks "No meat?!?" saying "I want that sandwich" Literally has NOTHING to do with their question. So in the context of their question and being relevant, you respond to the question that they asked.

I feel that the issue people have is not with vegans. It's perfectly acceptable to say you're a vegan to avoid food you don't eat. But a minority of vegans, like crossfitters, feel the need to push what they prefer on others that don't live up to their standards. And the vocal minority gets heard, and then stereotyped, and then turned into ridicule and memes.

Since there are no cheese nazis restricting usage, I think it falls into the same category as soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk, etc. Dairy people tried to stop those terms from being used on domestic US products, but they failed, and now they are widely called milks. Here's a link to vegan cheeses If you're into it, they can be quite gourmet, and a source of great interest and discussion among vegans, as you an imagine.
Oh, and FWIW, there are plenty of dairy cheeses that don't use animal rennet. Take a close look in the cheese aisle, and you'll see the words "vegetable rennet" quite frequently. Here's a link

It is not logical for a vegan who believes strongly in veganism to not talk about it. It is societal pressure of ostricization that prevents them from doing so.
even if I haven't found a convincing argument from any of them so far.
It is extremely difficult to unwind a lifetime of social conditioning that teaches eating animals is ok. It's a frustrating phenomenon. The argument that worked on me, after a long time of being on the fence, is simply.
It is unacceptable to inflict unnecessary pain and suffering (most people accept this)
eating meat is unnecessary (this is a nutrition science fact, even though it is harder to get people to accept it)
Therefore it is unacceptable to eat meat
I don't believe people are evil or stupid for not reaching the same conclusions I did, I just think if more people researched where their food actually comes from we'd have a lot more vegans.
It's not a great tactic to open by implying that my position is primarily the result of social conditioning. True or not, it's such a condescending statement that you'll alienate everyone you use it on.
Your points are consistent with the view that human pain and suffering is equivalent to non-human pain and suffering. I simply don't agree. My pleasure is worth more to me than eliminating the suffering of a non-human prepared for consumption. You can slippery-slope this view as far as you please until you characterize every meat eater as a serial killer waiting to happen, but I'm simply not swayed with your opinion alone.
That isn't to say I find our current meat eating habits wise. There would likely be a lot of societal benefits from shifting overall consumption to an even greater proportion of plant sources. That it would make people with your convictions happier would be a pleasant benefit.
I do not view human suffering as being equivalent. Clearly human suffering is worse, if it were somehow true that animal suffering would reduce human suffering my views would be slightly different, but its not. I view all unnecessary suffering as being a bad thing. Not eating animals does not cause me to suffer at all.
Not eating animals does not cause me to suffer at all.
I'd hope not, unless you were a vampire or something.
And that's the kind of response that causes vegans to be condescending.
Brendax claim: "It is unacceptable to inflict unnecessary pain and suffering"
Creus response: "Your points are consistent with the view that human pain and suffering is equivalent to non-human pain and suffering. I simply don't agree."
Those are substantively different statements. In fact, one can accept human pain and suffering as being 1,000,000 times worse than animal pain and still accept that causing unnecessary pain and suffering is wrong. Don't get in a tizzy about things you don't know and think about the arguments you are confronting.
Sorry, I was coming at it from the angle that the necessary pain and suffering we inflict on humans was being measured on the same scale as the unnecessary pain and suffering we inflict on food animals. I get how that might be confusing to some.

It's perfectly acceptable to say you're a vegan to avoid food you don't eat. But a minority of vegans feel the need to push what they prefer on others that don't live up to their standards.
So like Christians? And Jews? And Muslims? And Yankee fans? This shit happens to every group but vegans get singled out because you don't know someone is a vegan unless they are vocal about it. It's the same issue with the gay stereotype of 'flaming and loud'. You don't notice they are gay unless they are loud and flaming because you just assume the quiet and non-flaming gays are straight.
However, cross fitters, they are actually more guilty of the norm of constantly talking about it.

Yea except you guys aren't the only vegans around. I'm basically living with two vegans right now. One is fine and doesn't preach her diet, like you. The other... Good god, this girl will take any opportunity to tell you how bad the food I'm buying is and how unhealthy i am, all while sucking down her organic cigarettes being a self proclaimed alcoholic (like it's cute or somehow cool). Fuck that hypocritical bitch and she's hardly the first vegan i have met like that.
Most vegans might have your attitude and approach, but there are still a lot that aren't.

Oh, heh... I'm not a vegan. Just sympathizing. Sorry about your crappy roommate! :-)

A danish food store chain has sold a pizza marked as vegan, for years, just forgot about the cheese.

The vegan diet will never be accepted, nor should it.
The majority of vegans out there use being a vegan to mask a legit eating disorder. Being a vegan is not normal.

There's a new craze on the block, though. Raw foodism.
