Europeans have been telling the rest of the world what to do for 300 years, why stop now?

Im an American who currently lives in Europe.

Though I don't get personally attacked/insulted for it much, a lot of people here do casually talk about how stupid everything in America is and how overrated freedom is.

The people in the Government are not well liked, but the restrictions and government oversight are very well liked. It's maddening.

and how overrated freedom is.

I had a hard core leftist friend in college who said he'd be happy to give up his freedom if it meant he didn't have to put out effort. The stupidity is amazing.

If any of my friends ever said that to me it's over.

I had a hard core leftist friend in college who said he'd be happy to give up his freedom if it meant he didn't have to put out effort.

Then why doesn't he send himself to prison?

  • Free food
  • Free housing
  • Free medical care
  • 24/7 protection from the guards
  • No one is allowed to have weapons
  • Everyone is guaranteed (and in many cases, required) to have a job

The only things you're missing are freedom and liberty. But who needs those?

Not really surprising. Europeans have a long and proud history of creating and supporting tyrannical governments. Goes all the way back to monarchies, then to Nazism and Communism, then the modern social democratic state.

And when you look at the highlight of European enlightenment thinking, the French Revolution, it devolved into yet another tyranny in a handful of years.

    [–]ProjectD13X 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Well, the highlight of European enlightenment thinking was probably the American Revolution.

Well ive also found here that people have no grasp on how big/populated the USA is, either

When you show them on a map how huge it is and how many people are in it, all of the sudden the laws that work in this homogenous small state seem like they might not work fucking everywhere else

    [–]TheCreepero 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Over 300,000,000 people - not impressive A bit smaller than Canada. - not very impressive either

Also very homogenous compared to many other places.

I notice that those snooty "we are so much better than that literally Third World country America" Europeans don't know much about America, American politics, or the American system of government either. They just eat up what their media tells them, of how terrible America is and how much better Europe is. And yet they accuse Americans of being ignorant and parochial slaves of the media.

Oh, and Australians are included in this too. They're practically European anyway.

    [–]MyWifeIsABobcatI've never left a college campus or had a job 7 ポイント8 ポイント  (0子コメント)

To be fair, I'm sure plenty of Americans are asses to Europeans as well.

I tend to keep my mouth shut over here but a lot of what I hear is absolutely laughable

    [–]halr9000 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (0子コメント)

    The fucking irony....

Have you ever even been to any European country?

    snooty

I've found that people who use this word are usually brainwashed by American media.

Europe is bigger and has twice the population of US.

laws that work in this homogenous small state

Sweden for example has more immigrants per capita than US does. So does Germany with 80 million people.

Wow. Some bubble you people have created here for yourselves. It's truly impenetrable to facts.

    [–]OneHeadedMan -3 ポイント-2 ポイント  (3子コメント)

    more immigrants per capita

Yeah, this would mean something if you don't consider the fact that American Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians have been in America for generations and would therefore not be "immigrants." There are Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians that have been in America for longer than many whites.

    America: 62% white, 17% Hispanic, 13% Black, 5% Asian

Sweden: 80% Swedish, 20% immigrant (and this includes white immigrants)

    Germany: 92% German, 2.4% Turkish

Also, we don't only mean racial homogeneity. America is also more diverse in terms of culture, lifestyle, and economic standing than any one European country.

    [–]roobotsheep -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (2子コメント)

Aaaah... I forgot about the good ol murican racism.

America is also more diverse in terms of culture, lifestyle, and economic standing than any one European country.

LOL. You are like a walking cliché, aren't you? I didn't know income inequality and poverty was something to brag about in US too....

Culture and lifestyle more different than between countries? LOL.... You can't be serious...

This sub is like a shrine to stereotypical American idiocy.

    [–]OneHeadedMan -2 ポイント-1 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Aaaah... I forgot about the good ol murican racism.

What racism? The fuck are you on? All I did was disprove your implication that countries like Sweden and Germany are somehow more diverse than America. Then you accuse me of racism. Also, I'm not even American.

LOL. You are like a walking cliché, aren't you? I didn't know income inequality and poverty was something to brag about in US too....

Yeah, that's not what I said.

Culture and lifestyle more different than between countries? LOL.... You can't be serious...

You're missing the point entirely. I never said that Europe is not diverse. I said that America, as a single country, is more diverse than any one European country. Which is why it's absurd when know-nothing Europeans from tiny, homogeneous countries smugly say that the American Federal government should enact the same social democratic policies their countries' governments have, as if it'd work just as well.

    [–]roobotsheep -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (0子コメント)

All I did was disprove your implication that countries like Sweden and Germany are somehow more diverse than America.

Nope. I said they have more immigrants. Then you said that people who have lived in US for generations are somehow more "diverse" than actual immigrants from other countries. Why? Because they are of a different skincolor?

Like skincolor is the most relevant indicator of "diversity". That's just plain old racism.

It's just so institutionalised and ingrained to your psyche that you can't even see it.

I said that America, as a single country, is more diverse than any one European country.

    Sigh...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_ranked_by_ethnic_and_cultural_diversity_level

US is number 85 after many single Eruropean nations, not to mention Europe as a whole. But, yeah... Better not let facts get in to the way of your American exceptionalistic circlejerk.

It's always "US can't be compared to a single European nation" until you think you can make US seem more "diverse" by doing so.

Again, You could take a chunk of Europe with 350 million people and see that that chunk is way more diverse. But you won't. You could use per capita statistics, but I don't think you even understand what that means.

Which is why it's absurd when know-nothing Europeans from tiny, homogeneous countries smugly say that the American Federal government should enact the same social democratic policies their countries' governments have.

If only we had a way of looking at the US as say 50 smaller entities, with population and geographichal size equal to European countries?

Like states or something.... Or better yet, directly compare Europe to US? Oh but that still doesn't work in your favor, so let's just ignore all that....

as if it'd work just as well.

And why wouldn't it work exactly? Oh, right... Because black people, who totally don't exist in Europe, amaright?

    (and this includes white immigrants)

LOL. How can you claim with a straight face that this is not blatant racism?

"If only our country was racially pure so we could have social democracy, proper schools and broadband internet, but those pesky niggers ruin everything for everybody."

But Europe isn't a country. The US is a lot bigger than any single european country (except Russia)

The term state is kind of confusing when talking about US states, not in the sense of nation states, but like the State of California is not a country.

how stupid everything in America is and how overrated freedom is.

I'm pretty sure they mean American freedom is overrated as in "Americans really think that they are free?" Because the fact that you think that and hold it in such a high regard is actually hilarious. And sad.

    [–]roobotsheep -3 ポイント-2 ポイント  (0子コメント)

    how overrated freedom is.

LOL. What the fuck is that supposed to even mean?

Use of the term British subject was discontinued for all persons who fell into these categories, or who had a national citizenship of any other Commonwealth country." No such thing as a British subject :)

Googling and general knowledge is hard, isn't it? Also not every European country is a kingdom, unless you actually think there's a King of Europe or something? haha
