Well that was a surprisingly real phonecall. Talked with her mom about what happened and what she did, then her mom made the girl herself get on the phone and apologize.
I just asked her why she did it and she didn’t really have an answer. Talked to her for a little bit on how this can really hurt people and ruin lives.
She said she just wanted to be a good feminist
Talked a bit on what it means to be socially responsible, and how if she really wanted to make a positive change she wouldn’t do stuff like this
Her mom was terrified I was gonna press charges or something, but I said nah, I’m not gonna ruin anyone’s life like that. She did get grounded from the internet for a couple of weeks, though.
She doesn’t seem like a bad kid, just really misguided and very impressionable. Last thing I said to her was that if anyone ever makes her think that helping someone ever means hurting someone else, they’re not interested in helping anyone and they probably don’t care what happens to her.
She said she was sorry, cried some, said she’ll never do it again and then she said something that really kinda just… I dunno, shocked me? She asked “Do you hate me?” and I said “No” and she just cried more and said she was sorry.
I asked her to remember that there are real, living people with real feelings at every computer and she said she’d try to.
I feel bad for her, really. People really lead her to believe what she did was an appropriate thing to do. That’s a failure and lack of social responsible on the fucking internet and its call out culture. She’s just as much a victim as I was.
