I know I can't really expect this, but what do you think of having characters in Magic that don't fall into the gender binary? Obviously I know it might be a problem as far as marketing goes, but it would be a really cool thing to see representation of non-binary folks in MtG.
Last year’s planeswalker Ashiok was us doing exactly that.
MaRo and wizards response to this stuff has always felt like a cop out. I get it, Magic is supported by a lot of very hostile white male nerds, and you don’t want your product on their bad side, but all of this is very side step-y.
What? You’re describing the exact opposite of what Wizards does. In what way ismaking a non-binary character a cop out to people wanting a non-binary character? Out of all gaming companies Wizards and Maro especially do try quite a bit in this area, and Maro even publicly apologized once for using less than perfect wording. There is literally nothing in this reply that is at all even close to a cop out.
You should read what MaRo said about using “his or her” in their card wording instead of “their”. They have never talked more deeply about Ashiok’s gender than just saying they aren’t a man or woman. It’s basically just trying to please people who care about that without doing anything actually major for the nonbinary genders or any actual representation
Remind me of how important Ashiok was to Theros’s plot?

I identify with Ashiok because I too want to become the living embodiment of nightmares.
