For what it's worth I'm an English woman in my early 40's.

I came to this sub because I'm addicted to make-up and I wanted some ideas and recommendations for non-European make-up to buy when I go on holiday.

But damn you girls (and occasional guys) are cliquey as fuck. I've learnt some great things from this sub but I would never, ever post a pic of my make up for CC. Because I'm frightened you'd downvote ME for being old as balls, or for having horrifically untamed brows, or for having boring make-up (that works great for me)

I think OP is trying to make the sub a welcoming, inclusive sharing and learning place. It sounds like a bratty dick rant but I see what they mean. Why don't you all pretend you've sat through Mean Girls and learnt a valuable lesson. (Also, Lohan would still be a beautiful actress and not the car crash she is now so there's a bonus)

I'm with you. I love this sub, but I learned my lesson by speaking up the last time and will just sit quietly in the corner from now on.

This type of post is not new. Examples: 1, 2, 3

Of course it's sad when an "unattractive" person, even if they have exceptional skill, isn't upvoted to the front page. Meanwhile some pretty girl who slapped on a fall lip colour gets 1000+ upvotes. I agree, it's shitty, not fair, and shouldn't be happening if this sub is truly about makeup. But no matter how many rants there are, and no matter how many people agree, nothing ever changes.

Also, to be fair, I can understand why some people would downvote. People who post pics that are EXTREMELY bright, too dark, blurred, too far away, with hair all up in their face, etc... to the point where it's obvious we can't see their makeup - how can they possibly expect us to give CC? Do they not have the foresight to see that people can't give CC on their terrible photo? Maybe I'm just bitter but I would think it'd be common sense to have a decent photo so people can SEE what you did. Despite this, I've left plenty of comments explaining why people weren't getting CC, and although some people were appreciative, many did not reply. I felt as though my efforts were just going to waste, and it was frustrating. So I see why it'd be much easier to just switch to downvoting, especially since posts like that keep rolling in and are never ending.

But yeah, downvoting people solely based on their physical attractiveness is just wrong.

This is an excellent comment, I really hope a lot of people see this! I wasn't aware there had been other posts like this already (even one as recently as 2 months ago!) But of course, those posts were written better than mine and are less... Harsh. Haha.

I agree with understanding why people downvote shit photos (poor lighting, can't see their face/makeup, etc.) But if we're all just downvoting them and not leaving comments on WHY they're getting downvoted or no comments, wouldn't it defeat the purpose of posting a photo for CC? We can let them know why their picture is bad, tell them to try again with a new photo, and see progress from there.

Anyways. I can see how people can get frustrated with constantly seeing bad photos. But we are all here to learn and help.

Ideally, yes, people should be nice and tell them why they're being downvoted, but it's not all rainbows and butterflies, unfortunately. Maybe I'm the harsh one here, but in my completely honest opinion, I don't think MUA is obligated to do anything for the poster, especially if they aren't competent enough to post a decent quality picture. Wouldn't them posting a crappy photo in the first place defeat the purpose for CC?

I really hate to be so negative, but it's just my opinion on what's real here. Sure, we're a community... but a HUGE one. 200k+. That's larger than some cities! It goes without saying that not everyone will be nice. I highly doubt searching by "new" is the norm. Actually commenting is even rarer. Likewise, not everyone will be competent. Not everyone will be happy.

I feel like the smaller makeup subs really have a sense of community. If you check /r/beautyaddiction, you'll notice it's more comment based rather than upvote based.

[–]AIejandritaCasual user 8

You can't see their makeup due to the pose they are striking "Fucking tell them" -Proceeds to tell them and gets downvoted to hell- Yeah.

I would upvote that comment

Usually if you browse new, they take it pretty well and resubmit with a better photo.

You're kinda coming at it in an annoying/bitchy way with ALL THE YELLING and the !!!! and BOLD LETTERING but I do agree. it's sad seeing someone who is clearly nervous enough as it is to post their FOTD only to have it downvoted or with 0 comments because all the praise and glory is going to the same faces on the front page. that's why I browse by new and not by hot, I can only see the same faces and looks ( fawns, groans ) so many times.

I'm not kinda coming at it in an annoying/bitchy way... I 100% fully am. Idk. I'm aware of that, and I'm sorry for those who were bothered by it, but I was really bothered writing it.

And if I'm being completely honest, like yeah it sucks that you have to read my bold face and caps (which, by the way to anyone reading this comment/the post, thanks for taking your time to read what I had to say!) but I truly feel like if it wasn't written with ... Ugh, "passion" behind it, it would get buried. This was something I really wanted everyone to see and remember (even if it was for the obnoxious format.)

[–]PhoenixDaysPurple Eyeshadow Forever 15

Also, stop down voting looks just because they aren't one of the typical trends (red lips, natural makeup, currently Halloween, power brows, omg my makeup was so bad in sixth grade look at me now).

[–]50NosAndaYesEverything I eat tastes like lipstick.[S] 0

Yes. I agree with you so much. Like sorrrrrryyyy this isn't a halo eye or a baby pink lip. Sometimes the mall goth Invader Zim loving girl wants to show off her FOTD too, and sometimes it's going to look "weird" or "unconventional." It's still makeup, is it not? If you don't like it, ignore it. Don't downvote because it's "different" and/or "omg who is this loser?"

/r/MUA is starting to make me feel some type of way because it's starting to seem very sorority-like.

I was thinking about this earlier tonight, /r/makeupaddiction is so finicky about what they like. People will be so strict about following rules but if you're pretty it doesn't really matter that much. Which is really sad to me. Another thing that bothers me is that if someone is late to the party, posts about something that was really popular for a few days a week later or something, it's still new to them. They're excited and they want to share. People don't always respond well. I saw something today about it and the response was basically "We've seen this, we don't care. You aren't contributing to MUA." That bothers me, some people only can share their excitement here, they might not have people in their lives who will understand. Just because they didn't make the trend doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to share their excitement in a forum will people will understand and maybe be excited with them. At the same time, this is a forum of 200,000+ people, not everyone is going to be all that nice.

The body of the post coupled with your comments sounds like you were trying to pick a fight. Yes, people need to get CC on their makeup when asked. Yes, people need to stop downvoting due to different taste or actual appearance. But the way you're going about this is just wrong. Stuff like this is just begging for attention and drama rather than actually solving anything.

[–]brattnyohbrittanymarie.blogspot.com ♡ 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (3子コメント)

the "I am so excited to see what comments I will get from this" comment definitely supports what you're saying.

[–]50NosAndaYesEverything I eat tastes like lipstick.[S] 0

Listen, I don't feel like I need to explain myself at all because I said pretty much everything I need/wanted to say. But me saying "I'm so excited to see what comments I will get from this" was NOT because I was waiting to see a shitstorm of hate or disagreeing comments. It's literally what I said, I was/am excited to see what comments I will get from this. I feel like this is something many people have thoughts on, and I was hoping to see every single one of them.

That little angel emoticon was put there because honestly ... I don't know why, I thought it was fitting. But it was in no way to provoke anything/anyone.

Again, let me reiterate so no one gets confused about why I said that or what I'm saying- I'm excited to see what people have to say about this, I am encouraging everyone to write what they feel about this topic because I know not everyone shares the same thought. And that makes me excited because I would like to read about other opinions and shared insight.

I hope this clarifies things for you, if not, I am sorry you misconstrued what I said.

I understand that you're not going to understand it per se, but 50Nos saying that comment of "excitement" was towards me, an IRL friend who was making a joke with her. But I guess Reddit isn't the place for humor.

Womp.

[–]50NosAndaYesEverything I eat tastes like lipstick.[S] -4

Well, I mean yes and no. I am actually excited to see the comments I get because I know a lot of them are going to be opinions I don't have. Which is great because I would love to hear why I'm "wrong" or why they think downvoting is a good thing. I don't know. I just want to be enlightened, I guess? I definitely said it in a cunty way though, so if I could I would edit that and change it up but people have already quoted me so oops!

I think this is def a sub that would benefit from removing the downvote button

i don't, i downvote inappropriate content or content that imo doesnt benefit the sub, thats what the button is there for. in a sub this big theres obviously going to be downvoting for inappropriate reasons but most downvoting i see is justified.

I have a lot of feelings that have been bottled up and I really don't care how abrasive it was tbh. If you're not mean, no one will take what you say seriously.

BUT OoooOoOoh girl, I am so excited to see what comments I will get from this 0:)

This is basically how I feel ALL the time though about life in general so I don't blame you. Ha! Like I said, you're a little firecracker and I love it.

Also, I fully agree this place can get very clique-y. I'm not sure when it turned into Mean Girls and less of what it was meant to be... it's not a forum to showcase the best of makeup, but a place to welcome the good, bad and inbetween. I think we all (myself included) forget that a LOT.

Folks do know that Reddit has an automatic downvote algorithm for posts, right? Downvotes you see on posts aren't always from individual users; sometimes they're from Reddit itself.

Can you explain more about this? I have not heard of this before. (I believe you, just curious.)

[–]aspiringtoglamNC50 | Searching for the perfect nuetral eye palette

Sure! Here's an ELI5 post detailing the system, but the tl;dr version is that Reddit fuzzes votes to fool spambots. While the ration of up/down votes remain correct, the actual number shown to visitors is false. For example, if 100 people upvote something and 3 people downvote something, Reddit might show 1000/30.

[–]PhoenixDaysPurple Eyeshadow Forever 4

They don't usually happen on the lower score posts. Like something with ten upvotes won't get auto downvotes.

[–]aspiringtoglamNC50 | Searching for the perfect nuetral eye palette

True, but I see folks complaining about downvotes on so many posts on here that I suspect some of the commentators don't understand how Reddit's post/comment scoring works. Same with downvote bots; as big as MUA is and given how many innocuous comments get downvotes within minutes of posting, I guarantee you we've attracted at least one, if not several bots from the Reddit community at large. It's just part of being on Reddit. I think (I hope) these sort of posts would die down if people understood that.

another post ranting and bitching about the quality of this sub. greeeeeat.

Right? Damn.

Downvotes are going to happen, this is how the anonymity of the internet works. This sub is too big go control that and bitching about it won't make people suddenly change the way large subs work. Hurt feelings suck, but it isn't the end of the world.

Posts don't have the same etiquette as comments, downvotes will happen whenever people don't like the content. Nobody gets to decide and demand how other users dish out their votes. The entire point of this site is that everyone votes to decide what they want to see on the front page, every post won't get popular just because that's "fair". The Internet is full of traditionally structured forums where every post has equal chance for visibility. There's plenty of room there.

Agree. I try to give suggestions as much as I can for those girls but I'm still learning too so I'm probably not much help!

I feel bad though when someone's post is downvoted to hell with tons of views and no comments. That has to make you feel like shit! No wonder people say they're scared to post a FOTD.

I think a lot of people feel entitled to downvote when picture quality is bad or similar issues, because there's instructions in the sidebar for that stuff.

Well for those who don't know, there is no sidebar if you access the sub on mobile. Not everyone who comes here is reddit savvy. It was months before I knew there was a sidebar or rules. Sometimes people don't follow the rules because they don't know there are any!

Mobile user with sidebar. There are many different apps for reddit on multiple platforms.

Reddit is reddit - the first rule of posting anywhere on reddit is read the sidebar. Sometimes it's redundant and silly but it is basically the only consistent rule across the subs. Even downvoting/upvoting isn't consistent. It can be accessed via web browser if your app can't do it for some reason.

"Reddit is reddit - the first rule of posting anywhere on reddit is read the sidebar. "

That assumes that people are familiar with how reddit works, which can be very likely to not be the case.

[–]50NosAndaYesEverything I eat tastes like lipstick.[S] 2

I really hope this comment gets read by everyone who looks through the comments of my post because this is really good information. I didn't know there weren't rules/sidebar on mobile (I never use moble Reddit), and people should keep that in mind for new / not regular posters.

As far as picture quality goes, if you feel like the picture is bad, instead of feeling entitled to downvote, I think you should feel entitled to tell them. I think people will "get the hint" if you comment and say it instead of being dumbfounded and wondering why their post is getting downvoted. Not many people know what "good quality MUA posts" are.
