Yeah, so we're not land of the free because of limited cable options in select regions of the country. Yep... got us pegged bad there....

I see things like open internet and choices on how we get our media on par with freedom of the press.

it's a big deal. look at the protests in the middle east, in china. they are made possible by these technologies. ISPs/telecoms have serious power. if fighting for freedom isn't necessarily always about shooting people, perhaps sometimes it is about foresight and paying attention to world events.

That's actually a very good point. If they who control the internet is controlled by the government, there's actually a significant problem that isn't being addressed.

I mean do we really have to talk about the fact that you have draconian laws that restrict who can marry who or what surgery pregnant women can have, that you imprison more of your people than any developed nation on earth, make higher education unattainable for 90% of the population, etc etc etc

Wow, you're an idiot. 90% of Americans can't afford higher education? Do you realize that community college is free for the majority of people? And our community colleges are more respected than most Canadian universities? Also, abortion is legal in all states as dictated by the Supreme Court.

I swear some non-Americans only get their news about America off of reddit.

More respected where? Certainly not in Canada.

Where the fuck is community college free? Certainly not in my area. Have you taken advantage of these "free" community colleges, or are you just assuming?

And which superior, enlightened country do you hail from?

so you can only criticize something if what you have is better?

even if he was from fucking saudi arabia, that doesn't change the legal discrimation of gays, and the profitting off of the suffering and persecution of innocent people in the u.s.

[–]Accomplished_Stoner 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (12子コメント)

Canada.

Marry whoever you want. Get an abortion for free if you need one. Incarceration rate a full 6x lower than the US, and relatively easily affordable post-secondary education. Should I mention that when I break a bone I simply walk into a hospital and have it treated?

But, oh man, do I wish that I could buy a deadly weapon and store it in my home! /s

You only legalized gay marriage 9 years ago. Don't act like you had some huge head start on the US. It's legal in 30 states already anyways. It was zero not too long ago. It'll get there.

How is the minimum wage and renting over there? I'd love to hop over from the U.S. I'm pretty sick of where I am now.

[–]Accomplished_Stoner 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (5子コメント)

$11.00 where I am, rent can be expensive in the big cities, similar to what you see in the US.

Cold and hairy. Mix and match for either question.

So your minimum wage (at least in your area) is pretty much what Obama's talking about with the minimum wage overhaul... that would be fully in-effect in 5 years. Our minimum (national and most states) is still only $7.25 an hour.

Also, your name is damn promising. Whereabouts do you live, if you don't mind me asking. I really want to look into this.

Awww, our little brother country. That's cool, I'm sure you actually think anyone gives a shit about your country.

Get an abortion for free if you need one.

Not ok with that. If you want an abortion, go for it. But I sure as shit ain't paying for it. As for incarceration being lower, I wonder why? I did a quick look and found that Canada has under a million people that classified themselves black. Also about 500,000 that classified themselves as latin american. America has about 40 million blacks and 53 million hispanics. Call me racist if you want, but data don't lie and most crimes are committed by minorities. We simply have more of them. The education part I will give you, its way too expensive in this country. Part of that could be because everyone wants to go to college and they fill up way too fast and not enough people become trade workers, but thats speculation. I do know that people that shouldn't be going to college are going to college, and it is a problem. As for how you walk into a hospital and have your bone treated, its not like doctors work for free. You still pay them, just you pay the government first and then they pay the insurance. We just pay our insurance ourselves, we don't need Uncle Sam to file our insurance for us. My insurance is great, and when we get forced to switch over to the Obamacare soon, I'm going to pay more for worse coverage. Look at that, how worth for me.

but data don't lie and most crimes are committed by minorities.

You're right, that's pretty damn racist. You realize that our penal system is one of the most fucked up parts of our country? Minorities are still stigmatized by the areas they live in, mostly because they can't afford to live anywhere else. If they can't afford a better house, they sure as hell can't afford a higher education, which means they can't get a better job to earn money and maybe get an education to move up in the workforce and become successful. This cycle leads to these areas being rife with criminal activity. Police frequent these areas more, make more assumptions about who's up to what based on skin color, and frequently stop and sometimes arrest people who aren't doing anything wrong. Good men and women suffer this discrimination. I remember this one article about this black inner-city teacher that everybody loved. Police stopped him, accused him of smoking a burnt-out joint they found randomly on the ground, and he lost his job, even after he was proven innocent.

Our higher education systems are almost as fucked up, raising tuitions frequently and bolstering their staff with pointless executive positions (not teachers of campus staff) that contribute nothing to campuses or their academic pursuits and only add to the corruption. They sell the rights of their athletes to television networks and video game producers, but the students never see a penny of that. Quite frankly, it shouldn't be about the people who are going to college and failing, it should be about the people who have the capacity to be better for it, but can't afford the ridiculous shakedowns or loans.

And exactly 0% of that impacts me. Im sitting here with my six figure job I got because of a free ride to college based on good grades and am loving life and the US.

What restrictions are there to marriage in the US? I wasn't aware of that.

[–]Accomplished_Stoner -2 ポイント-1 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Gay people can't be married.

*In 20 states.

I feel like this is an important distinction, since there are 50 total.

[–]fuck_your_everything 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (8子コメント)

Ok. No jokes. All serious business.

America is ranked about 46th on the freedom of press scale.

Sweden, A EU member, is ranked 10. And I as a Swede think our media is horribly slanted and bought.

We are allowed to own both handguns, some rifles, and hunting rifles, etc.

Our healthcare without insurance costs 10$ per doctors visit. Doesn't matter if they listen to your lungs. Or do full bloodworks and EKG, testing, etc. I've had a mountain of tests done on me once and it was 10$. No insurance. Nothing. 10$.

I understand people want to defend their country. Especially America that get's such levels of hate directed at it. But for the love of all that is holy.

How can you not just admit that as a first world country. America is in a bad state comperatively?

Because it isn't. You can't see that because you've never lived here. You base your assumptions on statistics and Reddit posts, not real life.

Then Americans can stop saying they're the best and most free nation in the world.

Why? Because other people who have never been to the United States are unhappy because they read some Reddit comments?

Maybe not for you, that doesn't exclude the fact that others might not be doing so great. There's great deal of stuff that doesn't concern the normal people of the US, or well, not until it happens to you. And yes, statistically speaking there's a lot more people doing badly in your country than most of the first world countries. That's why it gets so much shit here on reddit.

Sure, I'm not an expert on this nor have I ever lived there but seriously, there's so much odd shit that I couldn't ever even think about living there. From education to healthcare, from gun laws to amount of homicides. Maybe it's the different cultures clashing or something I don't know and it's cool to see it has worked in the past. I'm not sure if it will work in the future though. I really think US would be such a great supernation with some basic tweaks but oh well, it's not that easy to make change, I get it, if you even want it.

Again, you're basing your argument on statistics and Reddit posts, not real life.

The United States is far higher on the quality of life scale than you think. Sure, we aren't performing as well as other western powers, but we still deal with the exact SAME issues that you guys deal with. Ours are just more amplified by sites like Reddit. We are still a very, very free nation.

I dunno about that... Europe seems to be light years ahead of the US in dealing with income inequality and endemic poverty. if you equate freedom with social mobility and access to necessary services the us is way behind the rest of the western world. we barely even talk about poverty in the us, and people recoil in disgust from things like socialized medicine and wealth redistribution even though those things are proven to increase standard of living.

...I pay $25 to see a doctor who tells me I'm fine. And forget about the price tag on my surgery earlier this year. :(

Select? What are you smoking, I want some.

Pretty sure the Comcast issue from a European perspective see it is concerning our ass-slow and unstable internet connections that we pay way too much for, not cable TV service.

You're not land of the free for many, many more reasons than that. A big one is the Prison industrial complex.
