Its easy to blame the government but sad reality is that Russians for the most part do not approve of homosexuality, the government just wants to be reelected.

whats sad in it? you like it, well, good for you - we dont like it, why do you think that your right to like it somehow overweights our right, ever heard of cultural diversity

You have the right to dislike whatever you want. We'll then exercise our right to say it's sad.

My problem comes when people take their personal dislikes and turn it into (potentially violent) action against the people they dislike.

Because Russians' dislike of homosexuality leads to abuse and persecution. To protect gays from abuse, it is not enough simply to make hate crimes illegal; you have to quash the sentiment that motivates it. It's the same reason you would object to anyone expressing bad feelings towards ethnic Russians: you know that tolerating such beliefs would lead to less respect for your people.

...?

a paper on russian lgbt laws to back your claim up that russia's homophobia isn't nearly as bad as the us

are you retarded?

The only retarded person is the one who makes a comment without reading the material. It's ok, you will know how to not look like a fool next time.

[–]lorenzoryeRussophobia turns me on.

Can you provide a paper analyzing Russian laws from an actual Russian perspective, you know, in Russian?

[–]a_hundred_bonerspodmoskalaradsky 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (3子コメント)

The material?

A huge .pdf about gay laws in RF?

To back up your claim that homophobia is worse in the US?

You're a fucking IDIOT.

Lol you're continuing to make a total fool of yourself because you have not read the material. It's rather funny, actually :P

As a gay man who is also an actual Russian citizen I can tell you, you're wrong, Russians are way wayyyy more homophobic than Americans. Almost 40% of the public in Russia wants homosexuality to be criminalized, which goes beyond the silly debate the US has about gay marriage.

You lost me there, did I say you can't have a right not to like it? To me homophobia is sad. To you it is not, so.. Ever heard of cultural diversity?

You russian people disgust me, in my country Russian immigrants are considred subhuman scum. You don't like that? Too bad you should deal with it

Hahaha, which country is that? Probably some little irrelevant one, with a shit economy? ;)

This ''relevance'' thing is really interesting. I also saw this in people while I was studying with Russian students in the Netherlands. Always during class they wanted to speak out, during parties they were the biggest talkers and the doers. Sometimes I'd say without any reason, just to be.. well.. relevant. All the Russians applied for the CEO, even though I'd say some of them were.. well.. mediocre at best. And guess what this closely aligns to?

The Americans! Now is this a byproduct of the time when states were world-wide empires? Or is this just a backdrop cultural thing.

I think in your example, it was simply due to the type of person they were. Likely, the Russian students studying in Netherlands were from rich families, the kids who are brought up in wealth tend to be show offs. Believe me, Russia has all types of people, it has the outgoing, loud types, as well as the shy, quiet types. Just like any other country. Being a part of a rich family tends to make people more arrogant. Don't use those people you encountered as a stereotype for all Russians.

My response was intended to cause offence in retaliation to the guy's moronic comment and bring him down to earth from considering Russian people "subhuman scum". I actually quite like Spain as a country.

You make a good point about Americans and Russians though, we are very similar in regards to patriotism.

The fact is that whether we want to or not stereotypes have some kind of truth in them. I don't agree with labeling all Spaniards outgoing party times, or all Finns introverted alcoholics. No, but it does show an overlying trend in the society.

The difference here in Latvia is the most prevalent - Latvians are quiet, while Russians are louder. Russians are more outgoing, while Latvians might stand aside. 9th of May is a good comparison point - Latvians don't nearly have as loud and ''proud'' celebrations as the Russian speaking population does, and I think it's a good show of differences in overal mentality and culture.

In simple terms - It's pretty much if you look at a scale of numbers from 1 to 10. Every country will have all the numbers, but if you look at different countries the average will be different. I'm a loud and proud Latvian, and I am definately out of the norm.

9th of May is a very special day to Russian people. ~25 million Soviet people died in the war, and it was truly the most glorious victory in history of mankind.

I really dislike the word glorious here, it sounds wrong. Glorious is something that is spectacular, beautiful and awe-inspiring, something that people can look up to and say ''holy fuck yeah''. Alexander the Great was glorious. The first man in space and the logistics behind it was glorious. I'd even say that the Machurian offensive done by the Soviets was glorious. The pyramids are glorious The Eastern Theater lacked any glory. It was a shitstain struggle full of crimes comitted by shitstain people for shitstained governments following their shitstain ideologies. In fact the shit I took today was more glorious than it. Men who saught glory in the Eastern theatre got two things: 1) death, 2) a list of war crimes behind them.

8th of May/9th of May is a great day, make no doubt, but right now I don't think people are treating it right. It shouldn't be a happy-go-lucky day with a party, it should be a day of rememberance and mourning. Many of my and your countrymen did unspeakable crimes. Where does glory fit into this? We lost so much in Europe that the scars will never go away.

Edit: What I mean to say is that, here we see the cultural differences already - we treat our celebrations quietly and with putting down candles. Our independance day has a party, make no doubt, but it's shadowed with the idea of thanking those who died to allow us to be where we are. I don't think Latvians would be comfortable doing the things Russians do on their celebrations. We're just way too introverted in general.
