Experience in full color 100 years of Tokyo’s incredible history.

2020年のオリンピック・パラリンピックを招致するTOKYO。世界の巨大都市の中で、東京だけが経験してきた歴史がある。100年の間に震災と戦争によって2度焼け野原となり、そこから不死鳥のようによみがえった不屈の歩みだ。それはどのように成し遂げられたのか？ ＮＨＫは、東京を撮影した白黒フィルムを世界中から収集、フランスのプロダクションと協力して現実にできるだけ近い色彩の復元に挑んだ。色を取り戻した映像からは、２度の破壊のすさまじさ、そこから立ち上がった庶民の喜怒哀楽など、歴史のリアルな手触りが生き生きと伝わってくる。

Tokyo, future host of the 2020 Olympics & Paralympics, has a unique history like no other megalopolis in the world. In the past one hundred years it has been burnt to the ground twice - first by earthquake and then by war. Yet each time it rose from the ashes like a phoenix to be rebuilt. How is this possible? NHK has collected thousands of black-and-white films of Tokyo from all around the world and,in collaboration with CC&C inFrance, has restored them and added color with cutting-edge technology. The colorized images are breathtaking and they vividly reveal the overwhelming magnitude of destruction and the indomitable determination of the Japanese to rebuild their great city.

COLORIZATION PROCESS

ＮＨＫが手を組んだのは、二つの世界大戦の映像をカラー化したシリーズ「アポカリプス」で世界に衝撃を与えたフランスのＣＣ＆Ｃ社。彼らが開発した最新のテクノロジーに加え、国内外の専門家100人以上と綿密な時代考証を行い、色の特定に挑んだ。NHK has produced this project with the French production company CC&C, whose “Apocalypse” series stunned the world with its intricately colorized footage of World Wars I & II. Using the latest colorization technology and under the guidance of over a hundred professors and researchers tocheck historical accuracy, NHK has restored authentic colors to the archival footage of Tokyo.
