"Transmisandry" and how it’s transmisogynistic

Here are some common problems with “transmisandry”:

CAFAB and CAMAB trans people are not equal. CAFAB trans people are an oppressor class when compared to CAMAB trans people.

AFAB trans people can receive benefits from enacting transmisogyny as a class and often hold male privilege over trans women (in the case of AFAB trans people in general as something trans women supposedly have, and in the specific case of trans men as a privilege).

Common examples of this are the assertion that trans women hold male privilege or that we’re all one community who suffer equally. Another common one is to cry oppression olympics when the reality of anti-trans violence (that is that trans women are the primary target and vast majority of recipients of anti-trans violence). Another is the occupation of women’s spaces at the expense of women. As well as typical male shit like talking over women and silencing us.

"Transmisandry" is used as a shield to block the calling out of trans men and other AFAB trans people’s transmisogyny.

As the header says accusations of transmisandry, though often just called transphobia, is used to protect AFAB trans people from being called out on their transmisogyny. This tactic paints trans women as violent oppressors of men lite* because it relies on the notion of “male socialization” vs “raised as a girl” and brings cis people to their aid against trans women. It has also sometimes been defined as misandry enacted by trans women which is just a further example of the leveraging of transmisogyny to attack trans women while refusing to recognize the male privilege that comes with being a trans man.

*(I am adding this note since apparently it is not clear enough, though more likely my words were purposely misconstrued. I am not calling trans men, men lite. I am referencing a concept that trans men themselves have talked about where to cis women, trans men are seen as cis men minus some negative social attributes. )

Discussions of “transmisandry” often call the oppression of trans women a privilege either explicitly or as the implicit opposite of the negative thing impacting trans men.

A common example of this, are the posts about the invisibility of trans men in media. They almost always imply that the visibility of trans women is a positive thing. This is a laughable assertion that can only be brought about by the ignorance of privilege.

Another one I often see is that trans men are not taken seriously or just considered to be going through a phase. These are often written as if people just believe trans women and give us treatment. This is a willful ignoring of the history of gatekeeping and pathologization of trans women as being mentally ill.

"Misandry" is not real, therefore neither is transmisandry.

Men are not systemically hated for being men. If a woman actually hates men it is result of the systemic violence enacted upon us as women by men as a class. Furthermore being oppressed on a different axis does not negate your male privilege nor is it “misandry”. You can still be oppressed by race, ability, class, sexuality etc… Furthermore issues that effect men are often the result of blow back sexism, more commonly called oppositional sexism. This is a term which explains how sexism creates opposites automatically and how men are often oppressed because of misogyny. A common example is custody rights. If women are granted custody more often it’s because of the sexist notion that women are naturally nurturing and good at child rearing.

Trans women can neither be “misandrists” nor “transmisandrists”.
