Neptunia TV First Impressions

A warning for newcomers to the Neptunia series:

If you have never played any of the Neptunia games before, chances are that you won’t get 95% of what’s going on. I will do my best to explain but there may be spoilers for the video game storyline. Expect A LOT of fanboying, references to the video games and “SQUEE!” moments should I find reasons to do so. Chances of newcomers being annoyed by both the show and my ramblings will be equally high.

Purple HeartFirst we get to see Mages and immediately thereafter, Purple Heart in a sexy dress. The reason I’m not complaining about My beloved Green Heart’s dress being the least revealing because Vert is a woman of elegance. Also, HOW COME THE ONLY ORACLE THAT DOESN’T GET A SCREEN SHOT IS THE ONE I CARE ABOUT MOST, CHIKA!?

My dearest Vert and her assetsLet me guess, Vert’s honorable “assets” will bounce every chance they get, won’t they?

My monitor is ruinedOh yes. 4th wall breaking, Neptune slacking off, Nepgear sucking up and Histoire throwing a fit…perfection, so far.

Gamindustri Peace TreatyOh yeah, the plot. Umm, the CPUs formed a peace treaty in which they agreed to no longer take shares from each other using force. Shares, or the citizens’ beliefs in their country (Console) is the same as consumer cash when buying video game consoles and the accompanying games.

Compa and ReiHUH!? What’s she doing here? This was unexpected.

Planeptune is in crisisLooks like Planeptune’s in deep doo-doo.

Anti-goddess rally invitationNeptune visits LastationYup. That’s pretty much what Neptune would do to escape a Histoire lecture.

Same old NoireAnd this is why Noire is the most popular character in the series.

Nepgear and UniThese two are the same. Uni has her mini-tsundere and inferiority complex towards her sister intact. The part about none of the CPU Candidates being able to transform yet is different though. The ringtone is also very familiar. Look up “La Dele Dele”. I love this remix a lot more than the original version from the first game.

LoweeMy favorite of the four nations, Lowee, although its CPU is my least favorite.

Blanc, the short temperedRam and RomAll the same. Also, Blanc and My Dearest Vert are up to something.

Black HeartA remix of “Solid Park” during Black Heart’s sexy transformation sequence! Nice! Hmm, surprisingly not as ecchi as Symphogear G’s transformations.

Oh, plot again. In order to teach Neptune what it takes to be a responsible goddess, IF suggested the party to go on a quest since paperwork sucks.

DogoosI have a feeling things are about to get sticky…which it did. As expected. Also, I do not like the Dogoos’ tails. Wow. “Ryuusei no Bifrost” during the battle. So much fanservice…and not just the erotic kind.

The rest of the episode was awesome with a battle against an Ancient Dragon and a Saber Cat, two familiar foes watching the action from a hidden location, a mysterious red crystal and an…interesting art style.

Overall, if you’re a fan of the series, this episode definitely lived up to the hype and is a must watch. If you’re a newcomer…then I have no idea what to tell you. It’s an anime filled with SoL, action, fanservice, video game references, comedy and moe goodness. I would not be surprised if the only people that pick this up are fans of the series, which as I’ve mentioned before is exactly what I am expecting to happen.

Hmmm, never heard about this franchise (thought it was a light novel, actually), but picked up the first episode on a whim. I found the characters charming, the first episode simple and straight to the point. A pleasant surprise.

There’s probably a lot going over my head, though, as I’m not much of a gamer. I only ever played SNES/N64 as far as consoles go, so I had to rake my head to come up with basic stuff like the what the countries represent. Is it Sega Saturn/Wii/Xbox/Playstation? But I can feel a strong comedic streak here, with what appears to be a mouse villain called Warechuu (割れ厨?) and whatnot.

And I only watched the raws, so I thought the Reinforce Zwei chibi-book character had some Engrish name ending in -ware (Installware, maybe, there’s Ram and Rom after all…), but from what you write, it was actually Flench instead. My bad xD.

I think I’ll keep watching at least for a few episodes.

-The episode focused a lot on adding references to the main story and pretty much showing newcomers why the games are popular. Everything you just saw in the first episode is all the games in a nutshell.
      -Sega Neptune/XBOX 360/Wii/PS3.
-He’s called Pirachu in English which I prefer.
-Histoire is a living encyclopedia containing all the information about Gamindustri’s history. The fairy is the physical representation it chose to use.

Hopefully you’ll survive till the end.

Just got done watching this ep and loved it. Fan service ftw but I think it was done well. The transformation sequences were good and, like you said, not as ecchi as Symphogear. Then again in the game they really aren’t that ecchi either. The Dogoo’s look weird with tails, no idea why they wasted time adding those. With her popping up that gets me thinking, “Will we get to see Iris Heart?” I really didn’t expect that No Goddess chick to be in here. That was def a surprise to me too. I’m gonna say I feel kinda sorry for Nepgear getting the type of exposure she did. Looking forward to more of the anime, just can’t wait!

Erm, well me being half awake half my post is not where it should be apparently. Sorry!

      • Overlord-G says:

No problem Foxy One. I posted this around 2:30 AM so I was barely awake myself.
Yes, HER inclusion was definitely a surprise.
I would not put it past the writers to find a way to add Plutia to the main story considering how popular both her and her seiyuu are.
Exactly. The Dogoos look fine just the way they are in the games. Why the tails?
I don’t think I need to tell you how I feel about the “Let’s humiliate Nepgear” segments in both V and apparently this show from the looks of it.

  3. Maybe Pururut will actually show up

Just picked up this show today. I have zero experience with the game. Whatever the case, fucking A+ first episode. Am a big fan of the character designs.
