Colgate University’s Student Protest: When Love And Microaggression Meet
Since September 22, 2014, over 300 Colgate University students have occupied almost every inch of Colgate’s Hurwitz Office of Admission building, for what is now a 5 day straight sit-in. The student-led organization, Association of Critical Collegians (ACC), is promoting a list of demands to make Colgate University a more inclusive space. Protesters are very committed to this action plan. Colgate’s campus is filled with signs saying, ” #I2amColgate, #SitinToStandUp, and #CanYouHearUsNow,” to lift up voices that have too often been silenced. posted on Sept. 26, 2014, at 10:02 a.m.

Today marks the 5th day of a student sit-in at Colgate University. Some students have even resorted to sleeping outside in near-freezing temperatures for what many are calling a revolution. #CanYouHearUsNow
What are these students fighting for? It’s simple—inclusiveness. Many students, who feel marginalized, are tired of the microaggressions they experience in their everyday lives at Colgate University—one of the nation’s leading liberal arts institutions.
While these students were protesting, some students also decided to voice their (*cough* racist *cough*) opinions on the matter through an app called Yik Yak.
This, however, has not deterred the protesters from continuing to make the campus a more inclusive space. What is so remarkable about it all is that even the #haters are welcomed to come by, ask questions, and fellowship with their peers.
With tuition being $60,000 per year, students—regardless of their financial aid award—should not feel uncomfortable and excluded on campus. During one of the forums, students described their experiences with bias for more than 3 hours.
Colgate alumni, Colgate’s study abroad students, and other people from all over the country have been supporting the student-led protest. Students are hoping that this will be the start of a new campus atmosphere.

“This isn’t about shaming Colgate. It’s about making a place that’s home to so many individuals safe and inclusive. We aren’t attacking administration either. We are all accountable for making this campus a better place. That means students, faculty, staff, the village of Hamilton and alumni. We NEED each other.” -Natasha Torres (Colgate University student).
Today, these students’ voices are louder than ever—no longer will they be silenced. #CanYouHearUsNow
