It's the antiquated term for what is now known as "Ebonics". That being said, there is a huge difference between excessive use of slang and being functionally illiterate.

FTR, I didn't downvote you. That being said, whether its called jive or ebonics, I believe she's is just using the term she knows. My grandmother called black people "Colored", but not in a disparaging way - its just the term her generation used.
