I'm not saying you could have spent that money better, but.

MS at this point literately has to spend money to avoid losing money. Not a big deal to them.

[–]PurifiedVenomPurified Venom 2

I think it's important to note that this isn't just MS Game Studios doing this, it's MS as a whole acquiring the Minecraft IP.

Gotta love the armchair execs in here with all their "better ways to spend the money."

I think the mojang team themselves are worth that amount just for how creative they are.

Are they really though? They're not getting any of the founders, Notch, Carl and Jakob are all leaving

It's not like those guys made the game by themselves i agree it is a big shame to lose them.

They made the vast majority of minecraft. They were the creative vision behind the game, I can't think of too much particularly creative or innovative that has been added sine their direct involvement ended

They also haven't worked on the game since 2011.

At which point just about everything that makes minecraft, minecraft was already in place

Right. They didn't have anything more to contribute from that point on.

Obviously they did but nothing exactly mindblowingly creative or innovative

Notch and everyone else already have more money that most of us ever will.

But for $2.5 billion dollars, what I'm saying is that I would have liked an Xbox One you could put on its side. Or I'd like 5 $500 million dollar games like Destiny. Or I'd like Kinect 2 for free. Because you can do all those things with $2.5 billion dollars.

Except with this they're making money starting right now.

5 $500 million dollar games like Destiny

You want more games like Destiny?

New, big budget IPs. Yes.

That would be nice, but hopefully they deliver the goods. I'm trying to think of the last time a new* big budget IP did that...

*Edit: one word

They aren't mutually exclusive. Microsoft easily has enough money to do both.

And they are. We've seen four or five studios that they have created in the past year or so. Interesting to see what becomes of them.

Notch and co aren't joining MS. They are leaving to do their own thing

Yeah I covered that below it is a shame to lose them but the rest of the creative team of mojang is a great grab.

Buying an enormously popular game, and making it exclusive to your system? Pretty big. Minecraft has the youth segment locked up, and Microsoft has just purchased them essentially. It's a very very smart move.

It isn't exclusive though. They've said they're keeping it on iOS, playstation etc

Current, I would be very surprised if Microsoft didn't make future updates, or at least some features, exclusive to Xbox. That is a LOT of money if they don't intend to leverage it for their system.

Microsoft is a publicly traded company. It would be difficult to explain to shareholders a 2.5 billion purchase and then share it with your competitors.

I would be very surprised if they did.

Again, given they just paid an ass-load of money for Minecraft, why would they not make future updates exclusive to Xbox, at least on Consoles?

Because they could sell more copies among other systems.

Microsoft is trying to win a Console war, not sell any particular game in and of itself. I assume they would rather sell more than Sony for market share. They now have a very popular game they can make X1 exclusive. That would be a powerful way to sell more X1's.

Even if they don't make it exclusive, they need to do something worthwhile with it. XboxOne version moved up to feature parity with PC and other platforms following somewhere behind could be one way. you arent taking it off the opposition, but you are benefiting your own platforms.

They will definitely do something, I can't imagine spending that kind of money without a plan in mind to leverage the brand.

Remember why the X1 isn't selling well? Because it got a bad reputation. What kind of a reputation do you think Microsoft and X1 will get if they buy the biggest indie developer in the world and start making Minecrafts features exclusive to its platform?

Microsoft once upon a time bought an indie developer , Bungie, and made their big upcoming game exclusive.

It's not bad publicity, it's just making their games exclusive to your system. They are behind this generation because they presented cool features in a very bad way, and didn't make them optional. They can get back in with a couple of big exclusives. Halo helps, Minecraft would help a bunch too.

The difference being that Bungie hadn't released anything... and Bungie wasn't indie, even though it was independently owned. But that isn't what indie traditionally means.

Bungie had released Marathon, a fairly popular Mac exclusive game.

Microsoft is a publicly traded company. It would be difficult to explain to shareholders a 2.5 billion purchase and then share it with your competitors.

Microsoft will make money selling it on PlayStation. Shareholders will be happy.

I would think they make more money by selling systems they might not have then if Minecraft was not exclusive. What is worth more, selling games on a competitor .... or selling systems, gaining market share because of it, and strengthening your platform? Every Xbox they sell over PS is multiple developers giving you more exclusives and money to the overall platform. That's bigger than selling copies of any one game.

Games are the battles, systems are the war .

It wouldn't be too hard to explain to shareholders that they are now making money from their competitor's by having a wildly successful franchise on all competing platforms.

But if you make that wildly successful franchise exclusive to your platform... you sell more of that platform. Everytime MS sells more X1's then PS4 they gain more money via accessories, Xbox Live subs, Licensing Fees. They make more money off each particular X1 then on more copies of a particualar game. In other words, 2m extra Xbox's is worth more money then 2m copies of Minecraft sold on competitors.

[–]AlekcamThE aPoKaLyPs -1

Maybe small things like Terraria does, but anything bigger than that and you'll have a big problem.

Like what, people boycotting? Yeah, because those PC/ PS gamers totally would have bought it for the Xbox anyway.

Why exactly? What do you mean? MS owns Minecraft now, why from a business perspective would it not make sense to keep it exclusive to their platform, at least on Consoles?

[–]AlekcamThE aPoKaLyPs 1

You can't alienate most of the players. The people that play MC on the X1 are nothing compared to the amount on PC and to screw them over would be the downfall of the game. You guys can downvote all you want, but that's not going to change the fact that Microsoft isn't stupid enough to pull some crazy shit like that.

I don't think they would take future updates away from PC. I DO think they would make future updates on consoles exclusive to Xbox.

[–]AlekcamThE aPoKaLyPs 0

That brings me back to my first point. Little bosses or minor items would be fine. Do what Terraria did. But any major additions wouldn't work.

Why exactly? I'm sure there are dozens of big feature additions that would be really good ideas. Dedicated servers, maybe more RPG elements, stuff like that.

Because they can potentially make WAY more money selling it on both. To sell more Xbox ones, sure it would make sense. To make more money though (which shareholders care about most) it would make more sense to keep the game multiplatform.

How do they make more money? If they sell more Xbox's they make more money then off a single game. They gain more developers selling things on their systems. MS gets a cut of every game sold on Xbox. That's better than a cut of a single game on PS. Theoretical numbers : 2m PS4 copies giving MS a cut.... or 10m various Xbox games giving MS a cut, maybe 10m xbox games that would not have been sold if Xbox didnt sell as many systems.

we aren't talking about various games, we are talking about one single game regardless of what platform it's on. So if it's on one platform then they'll make less money then if it was on multiple platforms. Also, Microsoft doesn't make while lot of profit off of sold Xbox ones. So selling a bunch of Xbox ones, even though they would make some profit wouldn't be that much profit.

Right, but by making Minecraft an exclusive you indirectly sell more of every other game on your platform, which gives you more licensing fees, which ARE money makers. As are Live Subscriptions, and Accessories. Every extra Xbox they sell makes their platform a bigger market share, which gives them more of the above. 2m extra Xbox's sold due to Minecraft being an exclusive, is worth more than 2m Minecraft copies on Playstation.

Minecraft is a game MS can sell systems off of. That makes everything else sell more, which overall makes more money than selling more copies of Minecraft by making it multi-platform.
