That's a child. Not a full grown adult that knows exactly what they are doing and chooses to ignore the consequences of their actions.

Can you honestly say that any amount of smacking from her could have been considered a danger to his health? Was he ever at any risk of injury? Was his reaction not wildly disproportionate?

EDIT - I would argue there are acceptable levels of self defense depending on a threat. Grabbing her hands to stop her from hitting him or putting up his hands to block her would have been an acceptable response. A left hook to the jaw certainly is not.
