See you say that just to make foreigners look stupid, they can't be real. Nonsense

Sorry but keep your ignorance out of here. My late sister was mauled to death by one and I find it grossly offensive that you think it is just some stupid joke.

Apologies my good sir. But most Australians I have asked that have come through the camp either say "what the hell is a drop bear" or just flat out saying no. Only my co workers have tried convincing me. But I'm sorry about your sister

people say that to trick visitors, as some people think putting people in danger is some sort of 'fun'

Also, if you are in the bush with them, they might be using you as the lure so they can get away if there is an attack.

Some cunts have a sick sense of humour.

They usually get the boot when they're discovered doing this, too. Please report them

Some city folk that never leave the city limits don't believe that there are drop bears but any Aussie that goes into any eucalyptus or gum tree bushland knows to be wary of drop bears.

My parents always taught me "one eye on the ground, for the king Brown. one eye in the air, for the drop bear." It's a rhyme that has prevented many attacks in my region.

We've had a couple of reports of them here, in Greensborough (NE Melbourne), but I'm hoping to God they're bullshit. Fucking dropbears around here? Ah man, shit will give me nightmares.

[–]dilbot2now under two years to go, hang in there!

Play safe. Never camp under a gumtree - they can shed whole limbs without warning. Drop bears can be made entirely of wood and kill you as thoroughly as their fleshly namesakes.

Dude, pretty insensitive. Australia is full of weird and dangerous animals. Look up blue ringed octopus, red back spider, brown snake, etc. even the cute ones are dangerous. You know the platypus? Dangerous, aggressive little fucker- has barbs that will rip you open. Look it up man, educate yourself.

The male Platypus is also venomous.

It has one of the most painful venoms known to man. People have begged doctors to cut off limbs that have been stung to get rid of the pain.

Lets not forget Irukandji, near microscopic jellyfish that are lethal, some of the largest crocodiles in the world and 3-5 metre sharks that give us the highest shark attack rates in the world.

Also, funnel web spiders, cone shells, rockfish (that can cause pain so unbearable the best treatment is submerging the affected area in boiling water), bluebottles and paralysis ticks.

Then we have the snakes. Western taipans (most venomous land snake in the world), dugites, king browns, tiger snakes, mulga snakes, red-bellied black snakes, and of course sea snakes.

Wait - cone shells are dangerous?

Edit - Okay I googled it and they are different from the ones I used to play with as a child. Phew!

Come shells in Australia are incredibly dangerous.

And the poison thing that lives in a shell,

That spikes you when you pick it up.

Come to Australia, you might accidentally get killed

Known as anything in a shell?

Don't forget the different vipers that call Australia home.

We don't have vipers, but we do have a vast array of death adders.

Oops. I thought they were the same thing. And I call myself Australian.

It's quicker to list the non-dangerous animals. I've heard some of the spiders bounce at people off tiny trampolines.

They do. It's rather disconcerting when they come at you at face height.

Let's not forget how painful it is to stand on a stone fish.

Or an oyster..

Are you sure you are not Canadian with all that apologising stuff?

Can confirm, lost half my cadet platoon up at Mount Disappointment in year 9 to a drop bear swarm.

Sorry for your loss fellow aussie.

Well, you say that, but it is confirmed by the Australian Museum: http://australianmuseum.net.au/Drop-Bear

"There are some suggested folk remedies that are said to act as a repellent to Drop Bears, these include having forks in the hair or Vegemite or toothpaste spread behind the ears."

UK checking in... Went to visit rellos in 2009, can't say I noticed them in Geelong but we had to eat the bbq'd food indoors in Brisbane (well the suburbs). They had a few tall trees overlooking their back yard and the threat of a drop bear attack made it too risky to have food near there.

Edit: also read up on Bunyips.

are you willing to take that risk though?

Open a jar of Vegemite. It's a strong smell. It helps mask your scent, the shampoo etc humans use every day makes you stick out like a sore thumb in the bush. Drop bears can track the unnatural smell and they've learned it smells like lunch.

They are absolutely real. I'm Australian but my American girlfriend had a close encounter a few months back.

It's incorrect. Use Promite.
