Ok, thanks for the "animal cruelty" tag, mods. Can we stop being so overly-sensitive to animals? I'm tired of going along with the silly game, saying that doing anything to animals (or insects, or arachnids) that isn't purely to their benefit is cruelty. My god, everyone and their mother has killed a spider in their lives and this looks like the most beneficial (outside of natural uses) use of a spider that you could think of. Should we prosecute the person involved in this? Should we also discontinue animal testing of drugs?

It's my understanding that the spiders used in these studies are very carefully handled and cared for. Hence the complicated spider-bondage instead of just skewering it to a board and harvesting the silk as it slowly dies.

Yup, they even feed and water them as they're doing this.

Also little tiny ballgags. And black eyemasks.

With lots of eyeholes.

I mean, sure, some stuff is animal cruelty, but this? If I put up a video of cows being milked would i get that tag?

To be fair, you don't need to nail a cow to the floor to milk it.

I've been doing it wrong this whole time?

you gotta nail the cow first ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

You've been doing it wrong this whole time.

Sounds like you are doing it efficiently!

The spider isn't nailed down, the legs are held in place by two nails that clearly cross at the top. Killing a spider every time you harvest the silk would be stupid and wasteful.

[–]turtle_with_dentures 21 ポイント22 ポイント  (0子コメント)

nail a cow to the floor

Well, the nails in OPs pic don't actually pierce the spider. They are just there to stop movement. It's hard to see in the gif, but when the camera angle is the guy pulling the thread towards the wheel you can better see how the nails are set up. They are all in triangular patterns. The spider is still restrained, but I can't imagine they are physically hurting during this process.

They didn't really nail it to the board. They it put the nails in at an angle like this /\ , and then use them to wedge the legs. So what they're really doing is just pinning the spider

Do you have a better way to collect spider silk?

That explains why the farmer was so angry...

Well, no, you don't need to.

You've never seen what to do cows have you?

PS I'm not some pc guy or anything I love meat and milk, but they're treated horribly.

Who is nailing anything? You really should actually click on the image.

I think it's more the fact that (most?) people imagine all animals to have the same amount of emotion variety, and that a cow would allow you to do it, while this spider would be freaking out over getting pinned down and having something inside of it getting spinned out.

For some, it's really hard to imagine how some animals can react just on instincts and have no self-reflection/emotions.

But the gif of a snake with no head.. A ok

It was very clearly a snake head with no body, FYI.

There was probably a snake with no head nearby

Or a snake body.

True. Bad words.

No, it was a snake with no body.

Cows actually need to be milked to maintain their health. Yay selective breeding!

Reddit, the place where we cry over the life of a spider and we make jokes about dead people's shoes

LEAVE THE SPIDER ALONE. IT'S A HUMAN BE... wait... wait. Yeah fuck it, go ahead and do that to it.

Animal testing has strict regulations when it comes to pharmaceuticals if the company complies with ISO standards. They must exhaust all other options and rationalize the need for an animal testing model. I don't feel this is similar, but I also do not think it is wrong. It's just a spider.

Of course you're right. It isn't a 1-to-1 comparison, just a little hyperbole. This seems to be a perfectly good use of a spider aside from letting it do its thing.

If Spider didna want to get silked, Spider shouldna made silk.

I mean, its a god damn spider. Do we really give a shit? I don't think spiders even have the brain structures to have feelings of like and dislike.

[–]Oberyn_TheRed_Viper 10 ポイント11 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Thankyou for being a normal, rational human being. So refreshing.

Can we confirm that the mods are bundles of sticks?

Mods are a bunch of spider-sympathizers

I know, right? There must be some kind of animals rights freak on the modlist for /r/wtf.

I've seen gifs/pictures of animals that are already dead and having odd things done to them marked as "animal cruelty". How the fuck can you be cruel to something that's already dead?

Well to be fair, most people don't want to see dead animals being fucked with either, so an animal cruelty tag is a reasonable catch all. But this? Just no.

Yeah I like how it is cruel to milk something most are fine with killing outright for no other reason then they do not like it existing. Often with fire.

a lot of people on reddit are extreme pussies, including the mods

I'm more intrigued in how they eventually nail the spider down than anything.
