Am I the only one who finds this sexist?

Maybe just a little, but in fairness that scared face was included in the set (they all have reversible heads). I think its just to add a little playability.

Yes, there's more than one way to read this photo

I'm confused? How the hell is this sexist?

I don't believe this is inherently sexist just because it's a female scientist. I think you may be projecting.

So sexism's just in the eye of the beholder?

I mean, on some level, yes?

But let me ask you this. If it were a male scientist, with two female hazmat helpers, would you claim sexism? A woman being helped in a male-dominated field does not automatically mean sexism.

And in this particular case, the blogger who made this image was probably working with what he had; the faces are unisex when you have no hair for context. They're Legos, for chrissakes.

If I had set something on fire in a lab, and two male coworkers came over to help me, I wouldn't ask them to stop because I am a strong, independent woman in the workforce. I would want the fire to be out. And then I'd probably be at least a little embarrassed afterward. I doubt I would even think about the genders of the people who helped me. I'd just be thanking them.

ANYWAYS, on topic: I just think it's strange when people are LOOKING for sexism in the most inane things. The internet has really made this a problem.

I wasn't looking for it. It just jumped out and clobbered me on the head. I am a man who rarely calls people out for sexism. But I see it here because I know that Lego released this set to inspire girls to do science. It seems like twisting it so the scientist is a fuck-up twists the intention of the set. I know that all successful scientists have their failures, but that's not how I read the photo initially.

I thought Lego released the set because a little girl wrote a great letter asking Lego to produce more sets with women doing cool things and having awesome jobs, rather than shopping sets, pink blocks, and similar. Lego (likely) wouldn't have done it without the publicity that letter got. But I guess I'm splitting hairs.

Look, sexism in my opinion has a lot to do with intent and context. The intention here (I imagine) was to make something humorous with the Legos that he had, to post on his blog alongside a review of the set. Like I said earlier, it just feels like you're projecting, since there is no context to draw from.

Perhaps I am projecting as well; I myself am female, and my sister is getting a doctorate in a (obviously) male-dominated science field (I don't want to get specific so I don't identify myself), so since this topic (females in science, not a lab on fire) is common in my life maybe that's why I saw this as funny, rather than assuming it had bad intent behind it (intentional or not).

Oh god please don't. /r/lego is one of the few places on this godforsaken site that isn't rife with this kind of misogynistic crap. Please don't spoil it.
