i don't see what getting media coverage on this is going to do. 4chan has been in the news more than reddit has and for way more intense shit too, but that site is more popular than ever. if anything it'll just give reddit free advertising for more bigots and other weirdos.

4chan would not care about a negative public image. Many people on reddit delude themselves into thinking reddit does not have a racism problem and that this is a more positive site.

Because it'll destroy any vernier of respectability that Reddit tries to maintain, and the site is already so commonly known that anybody who would use it has already heard of it.

I'm not so sure its respectability has been entirely destroyed. Like, I didn't get seriously in to reddit until just after pedogeddon and I never ever heard of that whole shebang until like 6 months later.

Reddit still has a very benign and "liberal" appearance to most outsiders. I described it as liberal (back when I was a shitlord) and my parents still refer to it as a left-leaning and "accepting" site even after I explain at length all the shit that goes on here.

Everyone knows 4chan is a cesspit of bigotry, but reddit is a "tolerant, liberal" site and people get sucked in without even knowing it.

I don't frequently try to be 'that person', but Vernier is a brand/type of calipers. Veneer is a thin superficial covering for aesthetic purposes. I only post this out of love...

Reddit only does anything about nasty issues with the site when they get shamed into doing so by the media. Jailbait, creepshots, the boston bomber ... the Reddit admins only did anything about any of those issues when they got into the news negatively about it.

I really don't understand the priority here, what the overall aim or philosophy of Reddit management is in terms of what they want for the site. Horrible bigoted shit, rape threats, harassment, all totally fine. Meddling with karma scores however and you get a ban.

And still, shadowbanning is a weird fucking punishment, too. People immediately create new accounts, and the admins are totally fine with that.
