Unstable, rife with bugs and limitations
Using 3rd-party VSTs is a buggy nightmare and a huge chore. I still haven’t gotten Superior Drummer’s interface to display, although it can be loaded as a plugin and used with presets. I’m running an extremely powerful iMac, yet audio files in the playlist randomly won’t play immediately when they are supposed to be triggered (this glitch is even present AFTER THE SONG IS BOUNCED!) Removing the ability to apply whatever effect you want to any given track is pretty insulting, too - I can decide whether or not I want to put distortion on my vocals or a bass amp on my synthesizer, thanks. Everything I loved about the simplicity, ease of use, and ability to experiment in Garageband 6 is taken away and has been replaced with this mess.
24-bit recording and 64-bit architecture are obviously a must and a clear step in the right direction - but why did the basic interface have to be ruined so badly? Interfacing with Logic Pro X is also extremely buggy. This program is worthless to me.
I wish we could just have a 64-bit version of GB 6.
Update works, just a lot of strain since the update is only days old...
Keep retrying the download (Garageband menu -> Check for Updates (or something). Eventually you’ll get it, and it’s definitely worth it for the new Drummers and the 10ishGB of new loops.
Still my “go to” on a MacBook instead of Logic. This version has made moving projects over from GB to LPX and vice-versa much easier with the new drummer models and loops (they are more “manageabe” in LPX and do not bring unknown loops over to GB as generic audio).
Also, don’t know if this was a bug, or just me, but Software Instruments created and arranged in GB are now much more flexible in their parameters in the LPX tracks list than before (may have just been me, but audio-presets were not carrying over as the proper plugins in the previous GB, they are all working now!).
Don’t listen to the haters. It has everything the old Garageband had and more...
I just bought a new Macbook Pro Retina and transferred everything from my old computer. Everything went smoothly, except that I lost certain midi presets. So, I’m going to have to figure out how to transfer them to this computer. I think I can figure that out. But after one day using the new Garageband, I’m completely sold. I think the layout is much more intuitive. And everything is there if you go digging for it. I am a big fan. And I have recorded several albums in Garageband. I dig this version. The old one transferred over to my applications also, but I don’t think I’ll use it. I like this version better.
