The present-day Midwest American city of Chicago was, at the time of its founding in the early 1800s, on the extreme western frontier of the then expanding United States of America. As such, it was on the frontline of the great race war between Europeans and American Indians—and as this book powerfully demonstrates, became symbolic of that bloody and brutal conflict. The first major construction in the city was the large timber-framed Fort Dearborn—and it was just outside this fort in 1812 that dozens of men, women, and children were massacred by Indian attackers. Published in 1944 by a former British Principal Secretary of the Air Ministry as a response to increasing discontent in Britain with the Allied bombing of German cities, this book set out to justify the saturation bombing of civilians. Reflecting official British government policy, it states clearly that the idea to saturate bomb civilian targets was initiated by the British in May 1940, and that Hitler opposed this concept and refused to retaliate for months while the German cities were bombed, hoping that “Churchill would come to his senses.” This belief is dismissed as “stupid” by Spaight, who went on to describe as “pacifists” and “socialists” those Britons who objected to the bombing of civilians. The British bombers were designed to bomb cities, he said, while the “Teutonic mind” never even considered such a policy, and instead viewed an air force merely as a tool to “blast open” a path for attacking armies. The German air force, he pointed out, was never used for anything else until ordered to retaliate against the British campaign. “Whatever Hitler wanted or did not want, he most assuredly did not want the mutual bombing to go on. He had not wanted it ever to begin. He wanted it, having begun, to be called off. There was ample evidence that he did not want the latter kind of bombing to become the practice. He had done his best to have it banned by international agreement.” This is a shocking reminder of the horror of war which provides a fascinating insight into the brutal psychology of the time. In 1937, Germany’s Nazi government staged an exhibition in Munich entitled “Entartete Kunst”—the official designation given to all “modern art” which was not strictly classicist or realist in nature.
The exhibition was not merely designed to illustrate what the Nazis deemed “bad art,” but had a political purpose.
“Modern art” was deemed to be part of the overall assault on “German art” and culture by a Bolshevist—and largely Jewish—movement of “artists” who were working in tandem with the Communist movement to destroy German, and Western, civilization.
Included in this “degenerate art” were all works classed as cubism, Dada, surrealism, symbolism, post-Impressionism and Fauvism.
Germany’s art museums were scoured for such works, and were declared forfeit to the state.
When the exhibition finally closed, this guide-book, written by Fritz Kaiser, an official in the Reich Propaganda Ministry, was issued as a souvenir.
This version consists of a high quality reproduction of the original German booklet, and then an English-language translation, neatly laid out in the place of the German text. A fascinating historical document.
