Because nothing from /r/conservative will ever make it to the front page. X-post it to /r/videos or /r/funny or something and then we'll see.

But even more so today now that the abuses and reality of Soviet socialism becomes further and further relegated to the footnotes of history - to many on the American political left the Soviet Union was not really that bad

They used to simultaneously argue its economic 'successes' while claiming that they were a paper tiger that was being overstated as a threat by those big bad conservative 'war mongers' (like Reagan was often called for having the gall to take on the Soviet Union).

Once the Cold War was over, all the credit in the world was given to Gorbachev, who was an unwilling stakeholder who happened to be in power when the inevitable collapse finally occurred, and who was able to see the writing on the wall and opportunistically capitalize on Western intelligentsia's sudden need to give someone credit other than Reagan for the Soviet demise,

Revisionist history abounds... and as people get older and those who actually lived through it become less and less of a voice - and in turn those who know of the situation merely through what they 'learned' in school or passing sound bytes on television or movies become the majority - less of the reality of the situation is recognized.

Considering the age of the majority of Reddit's user base... it seems unlikely that such jokes would be fully appreciated by this audience as a whole.

Don't be so paranoid, it doesn't help. It just isn't making the front page because there's only 46 upvotes from a subreddit with 6000 viewers...

And remember that any liberal would kill to get Raegan into office now, since he would be considered more leftist than Obama is.

We are just now coming to the understanding that the Soviets killed upwards of 10x as many people as Hitler.

In the short context of history that has recognized the rights of the individual, we are yet to see any viable or better alternatives to self governance.

Reagan was pilloried by my friends and family when I was growing up and it was a while before I knew how bad the USSR was or how awesome the US is.

Most of the deaths were caused by Stalin, which isn't particularly relevant when thinking about the post-Stalin Soviet Union. It's like citing the number of slaves held in US history as an example of how bad the US is now.

Man, how could he get away with saying this stuff back then? If Obama or Bush ever decided to tell an Iranian joke the PC police would be on them so quickly for being undiplomatic and insensitive

Couple of reasons, first off Yakov Smirnoff was super popular at the time, doing all these jokes for years by that point already.

Secondly, the Soviet Union was a clear enemy an antagonist, with nuclear missiles pointed right at your home town. They were powerful, and actually posed a threat, so jokes at their expense and Rocky IV were very welcomed. Compare this to Iran, which the US could crush in a blow, but we're talking about attacking them, once again, to prevent destabilization and the shadowy terrorist threat. Doesn't have to same thrill to knock them down a notch.

Finally, and most importantly, making fun of the communist system in the Soviet Union is entirely different than making fun of a religious oppressive system because it's way easier. Imagine an Iranian joke, "I heard a story of a woman who wore too much makeup... and they threw her in jail... pause for laughter" Worse, many people in America belong to that same religion you're now bashing, so it's a hard line to walk to only make fun of the extreme version of it, but not mock the underlying faith.
