There needs to be a new theory that specifically applies to the gaming community. "The least likely, most stupid hypothesis that fits our biases the best is the one we will believe."

Gotta love how all it takes is the word of one disgruntled ex to prove beyond a doubt that Zoe Quinn is an evil succubus who is single handedly destroying game journalism but all the subsequent harassment, doxxing and hacking must be made up for attention. Occam's razor was never intended to cut through bullshit this thick.

This was pretty obviously not actually /v/ or likely 4chan at all, tho.

/v/ is laughing it up about how blatantly (intentionally) not-them this is*. Nobody on that site has downloaded the file, although they all are having fun playing games pretending what it contains.

Meh. This whole thing is wholly uninteresting beyond initial investigations, and I'm not going to bother trying to download the 1.5 GB file either. For all I know, it's 1.5 GB of viruses.

*To somebody who uses 4chan regularly for a couple boards, the equivalent non-4channer thing would be to commit a forgery and then sign the forged document with a misspelled name of the person (in crayon ofc) you're trying to be impersonating. Then you give your victim the forged document and claim they published it. The intended effect is to upset 4chan. That's why this is so boring.

[–]Burrfrog 16 ポイント17 ポイント  (6子コメント)

/v/ already accused Zoe of hacking her own tumblr, because the person who hacked her wrote "HACKED BY 4CHAN'S /V/" in the description, which apparently ~proves~ the conspiracy because no /v/ user would ever use caps, or something. So this hack is most likely a reference to that. Pathetically, /v/ actually believes this is a false flag by Zoe (or Phil Phish).

They're seriously tipping the FBI on this, because they think it will get one over on the 'SJWs'. It would be funny if it wasn't so damn pathetic.

[–]Quitchan 18 ポイント19 ポイント  (0子コメント)

4chan is literally blaming Adam Sessler now (because of a Tweet that took place over an hour ago). Honestly, whoever did this really did a good job at setting it up in a way that the maximum number of people would be upset - which was probably their goal (aside from attacking Phil Fish, which was their primary objective). Given how people are reacting to their stunt, they're probably pretty content and feeling pretty smug.

[–]lborgia 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Oh god yes, I've seen 'False Flag' all over twitter.

And since we have 'proof' rolls eyes that Zoe has had sex at some point in her life, anyone who defends her, or is seen with her in public, is accused of only being in it because they either are sleeping with her, or they would like to.

    [–]Quitchan 8 ポイント9 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Does it really matter who doxxed him? No, because ultimately we can't do anything against the doxxer(s). We can disapprove of their actions, but that's about as far as what we as a community can really do on our own. The most we can do is hope that the person / people responsible is apprehended by the authorities, and even the outlook on that is usually pretty slim... doxxing somebody is really disgusting and cowardly. It can literally ruin somebody's life, and for what? Internet points? Because they cancelled a game you wanted to play? really?

But to me, hiding behind a website that has been known to be shitty is even more cowardly and distasteful. They aren't even willing to be upfront about what they did, despite what they said. The very least they could do is own up to their own actions with an identity of their own...but then again, the person who did this was more than likely a gamer who hasn't had to do that once in their entire life.

IIRC, they don't have head mods either, or board specific mods. They have site admins, which are a few people who are friends with moot on IRC and keep the site running. These admins leave cleanup of the site to people who they call janitors, normal users who can flag threads for deletion. These janitors in turn rely on users to report threads. The way 4chan is moderated is notriously inefficient, and moot has had to rewrite the reporting system several times and then once more to include template reasons why are people banned because he or his admins couldn't be assed to keep writing out ban reasons.

At this point, sadly, the best thing that can happen for the future of video gaming is for the non-gaming media to pick up on the story and absolutely give the gaming community the kind of beating not seen since the violent video game hearings of the 90s. The key difference is that the gaming community at large created this negative stereotype and under extreme scrutiny, would be forced to either change their actions or own their image and watch gaming's entire credibility burn with it.

I really don't want to say that, but at this point, something will have to give and in my opinion, only an extreme identity crisis can keep gaming from being a haven for the worst people in society. It may destroy gaming as we know it, but it may be the thing to save it's future. With the exception of the Simpsons marathon, fuck today.

Personally I think this would be absolutely the worst thing that could happen. Mainstream media condemning channers? They'd fucking love that. For all that they accuse 'SJWs' of attention-seeking, these childish tantrums they throw are even more of a 'look at me LOOK AT ME MOOOOM THEY'RE NOT LOOKING' than any number of critically-acclaimed indie games. And mainstream condemnation would just encourage them to dig in and further entrench themselves in their shitty 'I'm fighting THE MAN' conspiracy theories.

If the games community wants rid of these assholes, only the games community can get rid of them.

[–]OthelloNYCI DO BETA MALE SHIT 6 ポイント7 ポイント  (10子コメント)

If the games community wants rid of these assholes, only the games community can get rid of them.

How? I've been wondering this for years. How do you get rid of someone in a community whose only standard is the price of entry? I can mute an asshole on most games. I can report them, and maybe they get their account banned from a game, maybe not. I can even have their IP banned from a messageboard if I'm lucky enough to have that messageboard be more in line with my values than theirs. But I can't stop them from buying a system that plays game, and subsequently buying games. Even if they weren't a nebulous amount of the community (I say nebulous because you never can tell how large a part of the community will be shitlords on a particular issue, or how much of 4chan actually supports a specific thing, it varies by a huge amount every individual time), how do you get rid of people who are dedicated to buying their way back in, and just emboldened by being told they aren't welcome?

    [–]lysaara 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Well, it's true that you can't just physically stop someone from playing games. But every game community website and every online game has rules of conduct, and in my opinion they generally need strengthening and much better enforcement. Crucially, I think, communities need to empower their mass of normal, non-hateful users to moderate conversations themselves whether through regular social pressures or some kind of crowd-sourced moderation system(which on websites as large and chaotic as 4chan or reddit would be less than useful, I realise).

I know of lots of small games sites with lovely communities but few large ones because the more users you have, the more difficult/expensive it becomes to moderate and enforce the rules, and a lot of these large communities will just shrug and say 'well if it's not actively attacking someone - and it's so expensive to get more moderators...' to ignore the problem of policing things like low-level misogyny, racism, homophobia etc. This becomes tacit approval of such attitudes and behaviour, making it harder for more reasonable members of the community to openly disapprove of and exclude people displaying these attitudes.

Basically I want the Iron Fist of Intersectional Feminism to smash endlessly upon the gaming community :v

Crucially, I think, communities need to empower their mass of normal, non-hateful users to moderate conversations themselves whether through regular social pressures or some kind of crowd-sourced moderation system

Technically, that's how Reddit is supposed to work. Unfortunately, the people with the most unified agenda tend to mobilize the quickest, and "not doing that" tends to be the most unified agenda.

This becomes tacit approval of such attitudes and behaviour, making it harder for more reasonable members of the community to openly disapprove of and exclude people displaying these attitudes.

I run into that problem all the time, it even happens in here when there's an avalanche of shit and the mods can barely keep up with the worst, let alone deal with someone demanding a detailed explanation for why ableism is bad, or something.

Basically I want the Iron Fist of Intersectional Feminism to smash endlessly upon the gaming community :v

Hilatiously THIS IS WHAT THEY ALREADY THINK IS HAPPENING. The reactions you see, the videos you see, and backlash you see is people mobilizing because they think they are rebelling against some overwhelming iron fist of feminism silencing, bullying, and doxxing the gaming community. This isn't hyperbole, this is actually what a lot of these people believe.

    [–]CotRA 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (7子コメント)

In the end, I think we're going to have to pack our bags and simply create our own communities that are completely isolated from the mainstream.

If mainstream video gaming can't make room for us, then we need to make safe spaces and room for ourselves. It won't fix everything, but giving us a secluded, dedicated community that doubles as a safe space is really the only future we have.

Also, as a sidenote, I think we can't underestimate the counter-culture in gaming. There are definitely a lot of big figures in gaming who are upset with the way Quinn is being treated and think these doxxers and harassers have zero justification, and they aren't afraid to speak out about that. Slowbeef, voidburger, General Ironicus, ChipCheezum, Shmorky, etc etc are all more than willing to stand up and call out gamers when they are doing things that are flat-out wrong. They're definitely part of a YT counter-culture in and of themselves, and they have the potential to really make room for more inclusive gaming since most (if not all) of them are working towards changing their community for inclusivity, especially voidburger and Shmorky.

So I think there are forces for positive change, but, in the end, we're going to have to simply cut ourselves from the mainstream and create isolated communities that we all can fall back to when we're facing this kind of crap. Kind of like SRSGaming, but larger and with more people and more sprawling.

[–]OthelloNYCI DO BETA MALE SHIT 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (6子コメント)

As a person who makes internet videos I can understand that being your point of view. As a person whose main interaction is gaming, for me, it's a bit less straightforward than that. The Fempire already has a minecraft server, SRS Civ games, etc, so this is kind of already happening, but again, this comes down to how much we can really invest an entire separate infrastructure, and, I guess, what you mean by separating.

    [–]CotRA 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (5子コメント)

I definitely know what you mean, since I'm in both camps and I'm living stealth as a queer and non-binary person. So it's easy for me to skip into communities seamlessly without issues.

But, I think the long-term goal is that Fempire and other SJ-friendly communities will grow big enough in order to become self-sustaining. I also think big communities that are susceptible to change will also go down this route, but I think small groups like SRSGaming will eventually give birth to larger communities and orgs.

I definitely don't mean that we need to take on some kind of Death Star-level of community creation, god no! Just that, with long-term and natural growth, things like SRSGaming and Fempire will eventually give birth to much larger communities that are safe spaces and have room for all kinds of gaming and gamers.

[–]OthelloNYCI DO BETA MALE SHIT 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (2子コメント)

I definitely don't mean that we need to take on some kind of Death Star-level of community creation, god no!

    NO NO, hahaha!

What I mean is, for example, when Tekken 6 came out I attended the release party/tournament. While I can't speak for the LGBTQ attendance, I was immediately surprised at how much of the crowd was gender and ethnically diverse (apparently Tekken in NYC is popular in black and Latino communities), which also surprised my friend from Texas who kept telling me I'd just see a bunch of white and Asian dudes.

I like going to fighting game tournaments, and I deal with the problematic elements of the fighting game community because the local tournaments themselves are pretty good, since people are a lot less shitty in person. I also used to play a lot of games online, though with the recent rise of CRPGs, that may change.

So when it comes to journalism, forums, etc, yes, I agree we need to make our own versions of these places that aren't just tumblr blogs, or maybe is a more unified version of tumblr blogs, who knows.

When it comes to actually playing games, you don't really have that many alternates to engaging with what is out there, is my point.

    [–]CotRA 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Hm, that's true regarding actually playing games. It's not very easy, and there really are only so many fans of a specific game. It's not like you can have 100 Red Orchestra fans, then 100 more in the Fempire. It's more like 90:10, with only 10 being in the Fempire and SRS.

It's a complicated issue. I think things like GaymerX will improve things. But I also think more conventions and public spheres for marginalized identities in gaming will help. But it's an open question with only a few ideas and few solutions.

[–]OthelloNYCI DO BETA MALE SHIT 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Well, it also depends on the angle you're looking at. GaymerX is definitely an improvement for LGBTQ people looking for a convention to meet up and celebrate and discuss games that is free from harassment. We could have others that are more generically made as safe spaces for everyone, sure, though getting people to recognize the need to that is a matter of perspective.

I mean even when I came here, literally the first thread I made a sort of comment on was how everyone was complaining about how FTL had more man than woman human named crew (which was actually because every named crew was named after a kickstarter backer of a certain level), and I pointed out that you could actually change any of either gender's name and have all women, but nobody seemed to notice that they were literally all white, which meant I couldn't represent myself or any of my friends.

But I will say for the most part, as far as discussion spaces, I totally agree that we need to focus on creating more of those, instead of just trying to get the shitty ones to police themselves on our behalf. It's failing miserably, and the backlash to trying is just making it worse.

If the games community wants rid of these assholes, only the games community can get rid of them.

While I agree that change should ultimately come from within, the reason this is so hard is because they make up a sizeable portion of the community. It's hard to out the majority. I'm not saying we shouldn't try but we could use the outside help to be honest.

And mainstream condemnation would just encourage them to dig in and further entrench themselves in their shitty 'I'm fighting THE MAN' conspiracy theories.

Yeah but is 4chan even still relevant, like, honestly? They'll kick and scream for sure, but it'll just prove everybody's point and make them easier targets for media to attack. It won't get them to change but it will get others to realize how shitty they are and those people will start implementing policy changes to exclude them from the hobby.

4chan won't change, but we can get other people to change and kick 4channers out, and media is really good at getting people to change, especially when they're put under scrutiny (I mean, shit the media made reddit delete /r/jailbait, if it can do that, what can't it do?)

    [–]SoA990 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

I will admit I was frustrated last night and am thinking a little clearer after gettting some sleep, but I thought that while a situation like that wouldn't stop these kinds of people, the kinds of embarrassment would force the gaming community at large to self-examine its image. I would like the gaming community to fix itself, but considering the massive split in the gaming community, major journalists and personalties like Jim Sterling and Adam Sessler not withstanding, I personally don't see that happening and if this does die down, it's basically kicking the can down the road for a bigger issue later on. Again, I was venting my frustration about the shitty gaming community last night so that might have clouded my thinking.

IIRC correctly the Japanese games thing came off as a kind of racist ""they" can't make good games" now there is a level playing field, or at least one that is level between white american dudes and japanese dudes. But it was a couple of years ago and I might be misremembering >.>

[–]OthelloNYCI DO BETA MALE SHIT 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (4子コメント)

Yeah, but the difference between "they" meaning Japanese developers (ie games from japan suck and I personally hate them) and people with Japanese genetic makeup (ie I am racist and hate eastern asians) is up to the observer, and I have a hard time believing he meant the latter, and also have a hard time believing the people who openly hated him for saying that really cared if he meant the latter, and weren't just basically doing the same thing gamers did when Anita Sarkeesian said "Peach getting kidnapped is a sexist trope" and took it as "Super Mario Brothers is bad and you are bad for liking it" and set fire to everything.

Basically, he's bad at being a public figure, and knowing how to state things when consumed by a public who will either take everything personal or interpret words in the worst possible ways.

I was making this point from the opposite side before, that once you live in the public, everything you do is scrutinized. You may say "so and so has the right to say what they think", but at that point they also have the responsibility to think about how they say it, and what impact saying it will have.

And I think Phil wasn't expecting to be in that position, or ready for that to happen just because he made a small game.

And I think Phil wasn't expecting to be in that position, or ready for that to happen just because he made a small game.

Well I mean with all the pre-hype and the time it took for it to come out I think the argument can be made he should have been somewhat prepared and was being very naive if he didn't expect it to some degree but he won some big awards and I guess that amplified what people took to be mistakes in how he handled himself to a greater degree.
