Norrie banned from Facebookfor using the 'T' word

Sydney’s pioneering gender activist Norrie is hopping mad today after being banned from Facebook for 24 hours after using the controversial ‘T’ word.
Norrie (pictured above) attended the popular Tranny Bingo event in Newtown’s Coopers Hotel yesterday evening, but mentioning it by name on Facebook led to Norrie’s account being closed for 24 hours after someone reported the post.
“We removed something you posted,” Norrie was informed when trying to log into the site this afternoon. “It doesn’t follow the Facebook Community Standards.”
The offending words were specified: ‘Tranny Bingo’.

“Who gives Facebook the right to decide what’s offensive?” a shocked and angered Norrie reacts. “Facebook should be offering a fair and equitable service. As gender-diverse people, we own the word ‘tranny’ and it can be a good and empowering word.”
As far as we know, this is the first time a local Facebook user has been censored by the site for using the term ‘tranny’, a word which some transgender people find offensive. If someone reports a post to Facebook, it’s often processed automatically without a real person looking at it and making a decision.
Norrie knows there’s a Facebook office in Sydney and hopes to visit soon for an explanation about today’s censorship and punishment. Norrie’s not one to be trifled with, having recently won a long court battle for to right to be registered as neither ‘male’ nor ‘female’ in the NSW Registry for Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Back in 2012, Trevor Ashley’s show ‘TrAnnie’ at the Opera House had to re-named after a groundswell of complaints by transgender activists. But there’s been no sign of a name-change by the organisers of Sydney’s various Tranny Bingo events.
“Well, the publicity isn’t doing Tranny Bingo any harm,” Norrie tells Same Same. “It was packed out last night. When people get the numbers, they jump up and yell ‘Tranny Bingo!!’
“It’s lots of fun, and shows that all transgender or sex and gender diverse people are welcomed equally.”
