Our CSO specifically told us to wear black suits. Should I really disregard their advice?

Absolutely disregard that. Black suits are for funerals or power. You aren't dead, neither is the guy you're talking to, and you sure as hell don't have the power and better not act like it.

Are you in the United States? If so, yes. They're fucking idiots who are giving you literally, indisputably bad advice. Will someone ding you for wearing black? Probably not, but it's a lot more noticeable than everything else I said really doesn't matter.

Don't wear a black suit. Period. Charcoal is as dark as you can go.

Fair enough. I own a navy suit as well so it's no big deal. I like the way it fits better too.

As if you are getting downvoted. Someone who wears a black suit to an interview looks ridiculous. Not to mention fluorescents give it a green hue. Like you said, it's a simple rule and just screams that person doesn't know the dress rules. It's almost as bad as buttoning every button on a suit.

I disagree with this statement vehemently. The problem with a black suit is wearing a white shirt and black tie with it (that is too formal). I've interviewed with employers from vault firms to the government to boutiques and solo shops wearing a black suit / pale colored shirt (blue usually) / and a matching tie. Largely, nobody cared, and several complimented me. The questions you should as are: 1) does my suit fit; 2) do I feel comfortable in it. Those are the questions that matter.

I definitely agree. A black suit can be super formal - but only if you want it that way. Colored shirts/ties go a long way.

Adding to this intelligent person's thoughts, look at the other law students around you as well. A black suit doesn't work for someone who doesn't know how to wear a suit well. Half of your competition will show up in something cheap with a flamboyantly colored shirt (usually some horrible turquoise) and a black tie, or they'll be dressed like they did at their bar mitzvah in a navy 3 button suit (sometimes with fucking gold buttons) without an underlying, subtle pattern, a white button down, and a red or yellow conservative patterned tie more suitable for a fraternity pledge welcome mixer than a law interview. If you look good dressed up a bit more, if you can pull off a contemporary look, do it. The confidence you feel from looking good, as opposed to looking generic, will give you more than enough of a boost to get past the status quo. Set yourself apart by being you, and being comfortable with yourself.

Well said.

It's not formal. And it's not business appropriate. Your job is to buy the least offensive thing you can. It doesn't matter if you like black suits, think the "rule" against black suits is dumb, or think you look best in a black suit. It's one thing people will notice. And chances are you never saw a black suit in Big Law or in a professional setting but rather you saw a dark charcoal. There is a significant difference.

No sane person thinks wearing a black suit (as long as you're not wearing a black tie) is unprofessional or offensive.

For what it's worth, I summered at a Big Law firm in NYC this summer and black suits were a no-go. I didn't wear one because I think they are tacky, but another summer did and was quietly told not to by a partner. He was from California though, so I think he got a bit of a pass the first time. He also wore khakis on casual Friday.

It is all geography and firm-specific. A friend who was at MoFo in Palo Alto said he could wear jeans, a friend at Curtis Mallet in NYC said "casual" Friday was a suit without a tie. In general I wouldn't wear a black suit to NYC firms to be safe, but I'm sure it is actually fine at many of them.

It's not proper and it's not part of the uniform. Congratulations if you think you should go out of your way to not wear the uniform.

Says the 1L with his vast experience in biglaw, or any law in general.

Rising 2L but why don't you feel like disputing what I said? Someone not involved in law can tell you this. And you do know there are 2L's who have SA'ed twice, right?

[–]The_Law_of_Pizza 0 ポイント1 ポイント

Actual attorney here.

I see black suits all the time. It's not as common as it used to be, but they're not at all uncommon.

You're fucking loony and are vastly overstating a current trend as a hard rule.

You're absolutely right, and the downvoters are wrong. Black suits don't belong in the workplace and after working in three different firms, it seems that real lawyers rarely wear them.

Black with a subtle pattern is fine. It's better to wear a black suit with an offset, traditional pattern (but colored) tie that you feel and look good in than to walk up in a getup that looks like you're coming from your bar mitzvah.

I like how you're getting down votes for offering good advixe

I wish I knew why. Apparently one person is downvoting all my posts.

It's good advice, but I think you can see how someone might find posts calling a CSO "fucking idiots," categorically a little bit abrasive.

If they're telling him to wear a black suit, they are fucking idiots.

Totally agree. You're not a fucking idiot if you think black is okay in a business setting, that just means you're not on the up-and-up re: men's fashion in the US (which, let's be honest, a lot of men aren't)

On the other hand, if your job is to instruct law students on how to get a job and then you tell them specifically to wear black, you're a fucking idiot, or at least bad at your job.

This. CSO should know better.

Black suits are for funerals, so depending on where you go to school, your CSO may be correct.
