Main duties
Brief for design work required:
The project : Logo (designed by 1st September) and Brochure Design (designed by 22nd September)
The Institut Français is fundraising for the renovation of its library, La Médiathèque, which is the biggest French library abroad.
The Institut Français have asked MiAL to recruit a student/ recent graduate of UAL as they need a logo to represent the renovation on various documents and a brochure for a fundraising gala dinner.
The fundraising dinner is for the restoration of the listed reading room (completed), enlargement and modernisation of the Children's Library, renovation and modernisation of the rest of the adult library.
We are currently fundraising for the renovation of the Children's Library.
The Institut Français need a new logo to symbolise the renovation of both the Children's Library and the adult library.
The main tags to sum up the whole renovation project are: Digital equipment Youth French learning Variety of supports Tradition & Innovation Learning & pleasure.
The brochure would both present the renovation & fundraising projects, display the menu of the dinner, thank our sponsors, and (this is the main part of it) present all the auction prizes.
The Institut Français would like to be able to use the logo:
As the main element of a poster (A6)
As a small illustration element in the Institut's various programmes & leaflets - see attached the docs '10-Le-Programme-Sept-2013 (5)-16' - it would replace the architect's illustration
As an illustration in some ads - see attached the doc '2013-12-06 Publicité INFO' - it would replace the building figure
As part of it as an illustration in a banner - see attached the doc '2014-01 Newsletter Bannière info fermeture' (sorry for poor quality) - it would replace the partial building figure at the bottom of page 1
On the cover for the brochure and to illustrate other documents in the future
The Institut Français would like this visual element to be as multipurpose as possible.
The Institut Français would like to use the brochure for a fundraising gala dinner (+ auction sale) at the French Ambassador's Residence.
Its structure would be quite similar to last year's brochure. Contact claire@madeinartslondon.com for a copy of the brochure. Your email will be answered by 5th August.
Guidelines for the designer:
The logo has to be illustrative, as we would like it to be the only visual element on some documents (poster, brochure), but it has to be adaptable in the same time (from big to small scales, in black & white but also in colour, as a whole but also parts of it)
Suggestions:
- Alphabet letters which would evolve forming a word/sentence
- Hijacking of a classical gravure (portrait of a famous literary character, of a writer) with modern elements (textures, extra graphic elements... these are suggestions).
- The brochure has to be elegant since it is made for an event at the Ambassador's Residence.
Exposure opportunities for student/ grad designer:
The brochure is made for a specific event - the most important of the year for the fundraising department. Hosted by the French Ambassador herself, it takes place at the French Residence, which is located on Kensington Palace Gardens. We're inviting 90 very high profile guests, most of them being successful businessmen and belonging to the highest French/Francophile social spheres of London. Some of them are at the head of big industrial or financial companies in the City. Last year's gala enabled us to gather over £160,000 - and we only had 70 guests: the outcome can give you a good idea of this year's guests' potential. Therefore we need to tailor a gala that would be absolutely spotless on every level: that's the event we are proposing a graphic design student/graduate to see his/her work associated with.
Desinger's name printed in the brochure, which will be:
- E-mailed 1 week before the gala to all the people that have been invited, whether they are attending or not (so they can participate in the auction beforehand)
- Printed and distributed to each attendant during the gala
- Desinger's name & link to his/her webpage in the thank-you e-mail that will be sent to all the guests in the days following the gala.
- If he/she wishes to, his/her name can be mentioned in the speeches during the gala. -
Skills & Experience
The UAL student or recent graduate (within three years of graduation) must understand the brief, be confident in designing, be able to accept and take on feedback for necessary changes to the design drafts and be able to work to tight deadlines. -
