But that would involve spending my own money. I'm pretty sure that waving a hand-printed sign and singing songs is just as effective.

Is it really so threatening to people that water gets provided to people who are having a hard time?

Yes, specifically when it sets a precedent that paying utilities is an option. I'd love to see Comcast set up a similar site for people who are having a hard time paying for HBO. Oh wait, those bills are paid or they shut off service. What a novel concept.

[–]Phenyhelm[S] 0

You don't die without HBO. You're saying that people who are poor and have little money, who do not have a lot of experience with financial planning, and are really trying to just survive deserve to die because they made bad choices by your standards.

People that are poor and have little money have plenty of programs that provide assistance. It's funny that's when the shutoff notice is carried out, that the majority of bills are paid ASAP. It's almost like people were ignoring bills even if they had the money to pay for them and chose not to. There wasn't a consequence to delinquency in the past and now there is. It's pretty simple.

Edit- your ignorance of me is so hypocritical, I will literally DIE without HBO. Have you seen Game of Thrones? That shit is so cash.

[–]Phenyhelm[S] -2

It's not simple. there actually aren't that many programs for helping pay delinquent water bills. SNAP doesn't do it and services are harder to gain than you think. They certainly take a lot of time when it's going to be shut off immediately.

People buy less food and borrow money from friends and family when they need to make sure their kids don't die.

when they need to make sure their kids don't die.

Please cite one single instance of someone in Detroit dying due to dehydration. I imagine there'd be at least a few hundred deaths by now due to all of the shutoffs.

You can't seriously be questioning a basic biological fact?

[–]LeftDetroitThrowAwayiraqicamel's pants 3

Examples. I'm waiting. Detroit News, Free Press, Mlive, etc. Any of them will work.

Here. Now quit your self righteous indignation, it won't get you laid by that cute activist girl in your freshman psych class.

If you ever fall from your high horse you will break your neck.

Oh you're just a treat. It must be nice to still have the naïveté of youth. Stay in school as long as you can, the real world is hard.

[–]Phenyhelm[S] 0

I'm glad you can continue your amazing ability to judge people based on no knowledge of them.

So...how much have you donated so far?

[–]LeftDetroitThrowAwayiraqicamel's pants 2

who are having a hard time

I have yet to meet anyone that's opposed to assistance for those that truly need it.

I actually had $400 I was going to donate towards water bills, but I spent it on Netroots Nation tickets instead. They gave me this sweet "activist" badge. Everyone at the protest was mad jelly.

[–]Phenyhelm[S] -2

Good for you.

Your privilege and sarcasm are showing through quite well. I'm glad life treated you well but that doesn't mean you turn your back on those who it didn't.

To you maybe it does. . .

[–]LeftDetroitThrowAwayiraqicamel's pants 2

My privilege can't be showing. I checked it hard this morning.

[–]Phenyhelm[S] -2

Didn't look hard enough.

[–]LeftDetroitThrowAwayiraqicamel's pants 2

Be sure to check that.

Check that privilege really hard.

Still not hard enough.

[–]Phenyhelm[S] -2

See above. People are in a really bad spot where their human needs can't be met but it's not important because making jokes about Privilege sure is funny.

[–]LeftDetroitThrowAwayiraqicamel's pants 2

Your assumption that children are dying in the street due to dehydration is only slightly funnier. Are you just assuming it's like Somalia, or is this from first-hand experience?

No, what I'm finding is a bunch of self righteous idiots from around the world who haven't been to Detroit are trying to white knight freeloaders in the name of "activism". That's why we get articles posted from newspapers/blogs around the world, very rarely local news at actually has a handle on the situation. They really believe those ruin pr0n photos are the entire city so any reduction in services mean PEOPLE WILL DIE. To them, Detroit actually is Somalia. They don't know you can go get a water cup at McD's down the street, an option many people in Eastern Africa don't have.

He never learned to check his privilege. I however frequently check mine. LeftDetroitThrowAway is a total n00b.

[–]LeftDetroitThrowAwayiraqicamel's pants 2

Can you teach me? I spent like 5 minutes staring in the mirror this morning while chanting "check your privilege". It must not have worked. I'll try shouting next time.

Well mine was especially hard to check this morning so I spent all my money on Shinola candles and rims. Side note, I actually did go to Kickstarter because I thought it would be hilarious to start one as a joke to actually pay my utility bills and post it. But I got bored so I started watching the Tour de France highlights and the day got away from me.

[–]Phenyhelm[S] -2

Sure, People being in a state where they can't pay for an essential human need sure is funny.

See, that's where you're very wrong. Many people can pay but chose not to. When presented with a shutoff notice the vast majority of residential accounts paid their bill or enrolled in payment programs. It's almost as if, and I don't want to infer too much, but it's almost said they had the money in the first place and ( gasp ) ignored the stacking up past-due notices!

I wonder how many non-essential needs they are still paying for?
