If birth control pills aren't natural, what are they? Supernatural? Magic?

Just because something's natural doesn't make it better. Sharks are natural. Poison ivy is natural. Lead is natural. Arsenic is natural. Uranium, radon, radium, thorium, and mercury are natural. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, and volcanoes are natural. Flesh-eating bacteria and brain-eating amoebas are natural. Lions, tigers, bears, wolves, hyenas, fugu, Gila monsters, black widows, brown recluses, supernovas, solar flares, asteroid strikes, black holes, and gamma rays are natural. Poison frogs are natural. Australia is natural (A whole country/continent that wants to kill you--think about it).

I don't think the natural argument goes very far either. AC is not natural and you can pry that out my cold dead hands.

But I think a scientific one based on hormonal birth control increasing certain risks for cancers, stroke, and heart conditions does. I also think it's worthwhile having a conversation about how most birth control targets women - despite the fact that, objectively speaking, men are fertile 100% of the time while women are not.

I think many women want a more nuanced discussion about birth control - and greater research into some very common, but very debilitating, conditions women face. Many OB/GYNS and worse, research hospitals, are not interested in discovering why women's bodies are having certain issues - endometriosis, PCOS, infertility - they simply want a quick fix and the pill can often provide that. In that way, many of us view the pill as a barrier to exploring better women's health options.

Birth control is an outside chemical not natural to my body being being put in my body by oral pill, implant under the skin, injection, patch, and foreign, man-made object placement for ...why? My fertility is a flesh-eating bacteria that needs to be fixed? Is like a lion or tiger that needs to be caged? Is a poison ivy that needs to be avoided like the plague for risk of life being made?

No, thank you. I am perfect the way I am, naturally. And while you might consider the naturally made poisonous frog, hurricane, and shark to be worthy of manipulation, deconstruction, and change my female body is not (especially not at the risk of breast cancer, blood clots, and over 100 other detrimental and non-detrimental side effects). It is amazing, naturally. And I am really sorry you cannot recognize that.

Devanie Marie Cooper So don't use it. Last I checked, no one is forcing it on you. But don't think that makes you better than anyone that does. Also, I trust you don't take any kinds of medicine at all. You know, so as to not be a hypocrite.

Love it!!! "Because the side effects and risks aren't worth a substandard and false sense of security"
"because I am responsible enough to make good choices without chemicals as a baby sitter"
"because the sex is better without hormone intervention --- no really it is. ;-)"

It's a persons right to not use it if they don't want to and they don't need to defend their reasons against others. On the other hand, if you're going to publicize your reasons they should probably be good and most or all of these are not.
                • Therese Ptak · Owner/Operator/Freelance Writer at Write Away Freelance
And who are you to judge? If it's really about a person's personal choice what their reasonings are shouldn't really be any of your business and they don't require your personal validation to make them meaningful.

Therese Ptak There reasoning shouldn't be my business, but they decided to announce it publicly. That puts me in a position to judge their reasons.

Also, it should be obvious that none of these people "require" my "validation". I don't know them. That doesn't have any effect on whether or not I find their reasons valid.

They announce something publicly. I respond publicly. No one's freedom has been infringed.

Mr. Bennett, i see that you are a Technician at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Can you comment on the link that has been found between artificial birth control and breast cancer? Perhaps you can give us a "good" reason to avoid artificial birth control?

Great Buzzfeed article on why women don't need cancer-causing, life-depriving, money-extorting drugs (i.e. artificial contraceptives). For the win!
