No it is acknowledging that some people have a better chance of living independently than others and acknowledging their needs are quite different.

How many lower functioning disabled people do you actual hang out with on a daily basis?

How many higher functioning do you hang out with?

Is it the higher functioning trying to speak for the low functioning telling you this bullshit or is it the low functioning themselves?

Is it non-disabled people who have no idea how the community works speaking for us?

Or is it just you playing savior to the poor abused disabled individuals?

I have seen people use ‘low functioning’ as an excuse to do terrible things such as PHYSICALLY ABUSE disabled people.

Just because an asshole abuses someone doesn’t mean they aren’t lower functioning or higher functioning. Abuse doesn’t make terms ableist it makes the individuals who use them that way ableist and abusive. If we take away those labels you ignore the vast differences in needs in different communities. I am a professional caregiver and a higher functioning Autistic woman I experience this on a daily basis so please stop trying to make things moe complicated than they need to be.

'Higher functioning' and 'lower functioning' also makes it sound like there's something wrong with autistic people. So there's that.

Holy shit now you’re just grasping at straws and totally ignoring the fact I am an Autistic person telling you that the label actually HELPS OUR FUCKING COMMUNITY.

Look you obviously don’t know much about this subject. I’m not being a dick when I say this, why don’t you go out and talk to Autistic people outside of tumblr and see how the label actually helps differentiate the needs of high and lower functioning individuals.

If you have questions I’m willing to answer them and I have a lot of friends that are willing to answer them as well.

We are wired differently. This is a disability. It’s not necessarily a bad thing we can turn it around and use it to our advantage but it takes time to learn how to do this. Have you been around people that are labled lower functioning? I live with one and work with many others. Trust me, the issues I have are quite different from theirs and therefore I should be labeled differently. Lumping us all in one label, one side of the spectrum would be completely ridiculous. This would make autism, and treatment even more confusing and difficult than it already is.

There is not anything wrong with us. Like you said, we are wired differently. DIFFERENT. not WRONG. And yes. I have been around people who are labeled low functioning. They communicate differently. They stim a lot. There are some things many people can do that they can’t. There are also things many people can’t do that they can. And there is nothing wrong with any form of autism.

You’re one of those that wants to put a big old happy face and ignore the struggles that all of us have.
I guess my skin picking and constant infections were toally fine, panic attacks perfectly fine!, I guess my brother’s meltdown are totally fine too!

You are completely ignoring that there are problems with Autism. Different wiring is a fucking disorder. We have to acknowledge that and stop pretending it’s all great or it’s all bad it’s a mixed bag. It is a spectrum and people like you want to pretend it’s not.

You ever had to be a caregiver? Ever had to take care of people who can’t care for themselves? If so would you say their needs are the same as yours? Would you say we should be under the same exact label, the same exact treatments?


I wouldn’t! I think that’s a disservice to everyone. But hey I’m just someone who works in the community and lives in it from both sides on a daily basis what do I know?
