Coming from the South, I have no idea what it's like to have such restrictions on firearm ownership, but it seems like you have a choice to make. Finding yourself in constant danger of [insert bad thing here] would be pretty stressful. You do one of four things: work towards changing the law, break the law, obey the law, or vacate the effective area of the law. It's an economic decision. Which one is the least impactful on the most important aspects of your life?

As for a magazine capacity cap, I don't really see an issue with 10 rounds. If you are concealing something on your person, you aren't carrying around a USP. It'll probably be something that can actually be concealed. Assuming you are using appropriate rounds and you are trained to shoot effectively in those situations, you don't need much more. 10 round mags, at the very least, allows 2 missed shots, and 3 shot groups to bring down 3 good sized people. That assumes you don't reload, and if you don't carry an extra mag or two, that's on you. So 3 down and two rounds to dig out of a wall should be well over most situations you could find yourself.

As far as the duty to retreat thing: have a good lawyer and keep in mind that your life is a whole lot easier if you are a good shot and are capable of keeping your mouth shut.

It sucks that reasonable gun laws don't exist, but I think we should keep in mind that blame is about as useful as an unloaded pistol.
