Slasher has been site wide banned[Other] (self.starcraft)

Lol its probably because he was doing stuff like this. http://www.reddit.com/r/Kappa/comments/2728wf/slasher_wanted_this_to_be_posted_so_gee_wiz_here/
Basically telling random people to post his articles.
This banning system is ridiculous. I want to see Slasher's articles on reddit, but if he's not allowed to post them himself that means that I have to pitch in and post them for him. So okay, I'll subscribe to onGamer's RSS feed and... wait, if I'm subscribed to their feed I'm already notified of their articles so why the fuck do I even come on reddit?
This is insane.
There's some ratio they look at. Reddit admins want people to be active and contribute on the site for things more than just what they have a pecuniary interest in.
If Slasher was a redditor who also happened to own and operate a website in addition to being a redditor, and submitted links in addition to being generally active in a community/several communities, there would be no issue.
But he's not. He ONLY EVER is active in submitting posts that link directly to his website, which he gets money from, or commenting on those posts.
It's really an easy fix too, he just needs to take an interest in reddit and be active on the starcraft subreddit (look at other pro players contributions to this subreddit as an example). He's just too lazy or stupid to do it.
If you own and operate shittythingsilikeontheinternet.com and only ever submit links pointing to your website that you make money off of, reddit doesn't want you here. It's really that simple.

Reddit is about sharing, not about advertising.
Reddit is about sharing existing content, not producing original content.
Advertising is about sharing your content. I really don't see the distinction.
Was Cyborgmatt doing dota2 patch analysis every week for reddit and posting it to his blog advertising or sharing the content he created? Is it really any different now that he posts them to ongamers instead of his blog?
I don't disagree with you, but the allegations are that ongamers and slashered specifically were participating in voting rings and asking for people to submit content, which is not the same as Matt posting his patch analysis and letting reddit do the rest of the work.
You guys have to understand how big of a traffic cow Reddit is, especially on /r/LeagueofLegends, where there's a half-mil subscribers and a good post can stay on the front page for most of the day.
I would not doubt much of OnGamers' content strategy to revolve around Reddit, considering their Twitter account has barely over 11k followers, and they need to feed an entire staff of eSports content creators. They sacrificed making their own community by just co-opting Reddit's, and they know that it will make them rich.
How does that make what they're doing okay? They're getting banned for exactly what you're talking about.
No no, I'm on your side; I think what they're doing isn't okay. I'm just saying that's their justification for doing it: instead of taking the time to do things the hard way and build up their own traffic base, they're saying "Hey, Reddit! Big numbers! Let's milk that as much as we can!"
It's lazy and terrible.
Even worse, they're bringing on good content creators like Cyborgmatt and then getting them in trouble.
On one hand, they're giving stability and money to content creators who deserve it.
On the other, they're subsidizing that money with scummy practices that are based around making money by any means possible.
Everybody profits from their articles being posted, not just onGamers? Consequently, the community gets informed or has something to talk about. It's also not a money grab, lol, you don't know how low CPM is these days.
[–]World EliteGharst -7
And how about you let the downvotes/upvotes decide what's advertising and what's need to know?
They wouldn't have needed to get other people to post articles for them if they weren't planning to upvote it themselves. That's the whole problem here, the employees of their site were upvoting their site explicitly and that's against the rules.
Want to know what is ridiculous? how people can't understand such a simple fucking rule.

Was ongamers spamming this sub or something? Anyone know the reason for the ban? Must of missed that drama.
Previously onGamers authors used to submit all of their content to the relevant reddits themselves and generally each of them would all vote on all the content because hey, they helped make it so they liked it.
The admins saw this as spamming and vote manipulation.
These cases aren't normally through malice or attempts to game the system, but ignorance of reddit rules. These guys just want to share the cool content they produce.
However sometimes, users do want to unfairly game the system and inflate their vote count and thus exposure to their content. We hear reports of skype and facebook groups for sharing links for participants to upvote.
One of the earliest and most high profile cases of an admin shadow ban on reddit as a whole that I remember was a guy who built a PC with a ridiculous amount of solid state drives. He made a really cool video demoing the ridiculous speed he could boot up various programs, games and suites of Microsoft Office. It turned out the drives had been proved to him for free by the manufacturer (I think it was Samsung) for him to make a viral video to promote them. An admin (who has since left) took exception to this and banned the video and the user from the site.
Its a thin line to tread. I wish the admins would give us moderators more power to inform these decisions which affect a community with which they have little familiarity, but alas generally the first time we hear about these bans is when someone notices they can no longer visit a user page anymore.

Why is somebody posting their own content bad? Isnt the purpouse of this site to be a news aggregator.
There's a bit of a disconnect between what reddit started out as and what newer users perceive it as. Reddit isn't a place to promote your own content. Its for reddit users to share cool links they've found with each other, not for creators to promote their content and say "look at this cool video I made".
We encourage engagement with content creators, but its not a place to register an account and soley post links to everything you create on another site. Its not a place to 'build an audience'. The admins consider that spam.
Some creators are dissatisfied with the reception their content gets when posted by others because they think it deserves more attention. We have a voting system to determine what gets promoted and hidden, but some of them try to subvert that for more attention.
But doesn't that apply to pretty much everything that is OC?
Its looked at differently when you make something off your own back just for the joy of creating something for the community, and when you create something for your website which pays you to produce content and is owned by CBS.
Its a fine line, because obviously I want content creators to earn a living and be successful, but I don't want for it to be via cheating on reddit and at the expense of others.
Either way its not my call to make. I'd like to be more involved in the process the admins take because for niche interests like starcraft they could be assisted by our insight.
Yeah, I guess. It's just that inconsistency annoys me a lot when it comes to moderating/admining (I guess there isn't a verb for everything).

Me too. I wish we got more communication from the admins about instances like these. I don't know specifically why Slasher was banned this time. I would imagine that it was because he did something he said he wouldn't do when he was wrangling to get his account back after being shadow banned the last time.
Asking people to post his content to /r/Kappa probably didn't help.
I'd imagine that's what sparked all of this particular incident, that and the user that reposted the screen cap with the obvious title.
Admin is short for administrator. So the verb you were looking for was 'administrating'.
I find the greatest irony here the fact that users who submit "ORIGINAL CONTENT" are seen as saints, and those that repost are seen as devil-spawn. So then why do Reddit admins ban people for posting their own content? I understand the idea that spamming is bad, but is it really that hard to filter real OC out?

A brief explanation of what happened.
As I'm sure many of you know, we've been having a few problems with ongamers for the past few months. Their employees have been manipulating reddit behind the scenes for a while (which was the reason for their ban the first time around). This time, in an attempt to subvert our rules set forth when we unbanned their domain, ongamers employees have now taken to repeatedly PMing users with instructions on how to post their links, including exact titles, and then having employees vote on those links once submitted. This behavior is totally unacceptable, and that is why /u/slashered and ongamers.com have been banned again.
[–]Team LiquidAbcZerg 91
ongamers could have done nothing, then most of their stuff would've been posted anyways and everything would be fine, instead they were greedy and wanted everything linked on reddit. Seems like they got what they deserved. I hope they won't go under because of this, ongamers itself is a pretty good site for the esports scene.
This is what baffles me the most! They're big enough to have their content up here without those risks :/
You underestimate how much a title means to some people and their ability to click through. Just having "PLAYER X INTERVIEW" in the title rather than "Player X on Player Y: (Inflammatory quote)" is the difference between thousands of clicks.
don't most posters just copy the title of the article? I don't think it's a big difference if ongamers can control the reddit thread titles or not.
In /r/League you'll see "Travis interviews X" as a common title. It sucks and it doesn't really help. If you don't believe me, fine, but the title makes all the difference.
They also control exactly when links get posted on Reddit to provide for the most clicks / chance to get front page'd. They flipped the fuck out on league of legends because someone posted a twitch VOD of a show they do.
And the guy who posted the Twitch VOD basically got bullied into the ground by Thorin and Montecristo, the guys who host the show, Summoner's Insight, and forced a public apology from this poor guy for linking to a public VOD.
The two hosts were beyond angry because their content wasn't released in a "controlled" manner to reddit. IE, they wanted to get as many views as possible.

Gimme a few minutes to find the stuff. Thorin and Monte went off on people on Twitter and then the reddit user apologized on reddit. I'll edit this post when I find all of relevant tweets/posts.
You're 100% right, people won't click the interview unless the title has something interesting in it. Like Travis' last interview with doublelift. The title had something about doublelift almost killing CLG while driving, I only clicked the link because that story sounded interesting.
Now that you mention it, that's so true. I never click "Player X Interview" because it sounds boring, but when the title says "Player X talks about that cool thing he did last game, that new fotm champ/build he's running, and an over exaggerated event in their personal life" I think to myself "no way! I get to hear his thoughts on that cool thing he did, hear something about the game that can apply to me, and get a glimpse on their personal life!!" Which is way more appealing. God damn marketing.

sadly, you can't be so consequent in esports, otherwise you would have to boycott pretty much everything.
Attending an IEM or ESL ONE? Nope, a couple of years ago ESL hadn't paid out all of the prize money
Wanting to watch some LoL for whatever reason? Nope, Riot actively hurts the general esport scene and tried to force teams and tournaments to only do LoL.
Watching the Dreamhack Hearthstone tournament? Nope, they hired the scammer Artosis.
Wanting to listen to the only pure SC2 talkshow that is left? Nope, Wheat fucked over SotG and used the status of his show to be biased towards Evil Geniuses.
Playing some casual CS:GO competition for fun? Nope, ESEA infected all their users with bitcoin miners and destroyed graphic cards due to overheating.

None of those things are ok, and that's why I don't play games that often anymore. I set standards and I live by them. If you don't agree with something, then don't support it. Summoners Insight I know that for sure, there is that big one with the Regi interview where he basically called him a Monkey, and a few weeks before Thorin mistook Wildturtl's mother for Vietnamese even thought he is obviously Korean and then made a very derogatory statement towards Korean families when Wild said he didn't want to talk about his mother on stream. Both of these were huge on reddit when they occurred and stemmed the TSM boycott of all things Ongamers. I mean you can go find those interviews and listen through them, but do it with none biased ear's. Don't listen to it as trash talk, listen to it as what it is supposed to be, a legit interview between professional's.

In many cases, keeping information like this private is the best course of action. Moderators are still users and are not exempt to reddit's privacy policy; what goes on between problematic users, websites, and the admins is private information and should not be freely given to moderators.
Of course, having complete transparency between moderators and admins would be great, but I'm perfectly fine with the way things are now. If the admins feel giving out information would be beneficial, they do so like /u/cupcake1713 did here.
Also, keep in mind that the Reddit admins can't keep track of everything and answer everything. They've got to deal with a lot of shit from default subs alone, and then also keep track of non-defaults? It's one hell of a job.

Essentially it's the equivalent of them manipulating votes to be on the top of the front page. Similar to the advertisements from Reddit clients that pay good money to be put on the front page for a certain amount of time.
If you think about it, Ongamers figured out a way to get free ad space on Reddit without having to pay.
If they weren't so cheap and paid the money maybe they wouldn't have this problem.

How? Streamers will post a reddit link and their veiwers will go upvote them.
How is upvoting something that your colleagues worked hard on against the rules?
What about the 99% of reddit that never browses New? Are we just subject to whatever is upvoted by them?
If someone makes a shit post and upvotes it 100 times its still not going to get exposure because it has no inherent value to offer others. Ongamers are far more valuable than random jerkoff posting 1080 noscope 420MLG videos and having his friends upvote it
Vote manipulation is a problem when it starts impacting the quality of the content of a subreddit as a whole. Ongamers is a major contributor of quality content banning them WORSENS every subreddit they contribute to.
Maybe reddit shouldn't have a system based upon people browsing New at the exact time that something gets posted for anything to be successful. If you eliminate the temptation(early votes heavily influence post success) you eliminate the outcome (vote manipulation to avoid getting buried in New.)
Maybe if ongamers made better content they wouldn't need to manipulate the system in order to get up votes

Has Ongamers cared to make an official statement regarding this issue? I have skimmed through their site (which I rarely visit due to their racist and elitist statements made in the past) and nothing has been posted there about this issue. I would love to see how they try to explain their way out of this one.

And yet a Curse employee's sock puppet is still allowed to run r/Hearthstone and push Curse site content. How is that okay but this isn't?
this is retarded actually. Everybody on /r/dota2 expects cyborgmatt's analysys every update, nobody else does it anyway. Nobody complains on ongamers articles, news but you. U're not even connected with dota probably and still tho, u keep ruining /r/dota2 subreddit. Don't try to tell us, that u're doing this for us, users. What a bullshit.
I'm not a DOTA guy. I hail from League. However, if "everyone" on /r/Dota2 expects some onGamer's employee's insight into an update, why don't they just follow onGamers directly instead of getting all of their news from reddit?
You know, get your news straight from the source instead of waiting for it to go up on reddit...
Oh come on. Couldn't you just do a subreddit specific one? Over on /r/dota2 there's been none of this bullshit, and we post from it ourselves, and it's one of the most-read sites on our sub. This is bullshit, and not allowing them to post their own content for and about the subreddit and it's subject is also just really damn stupid. Sigh... Rules are rules I guess, but man - You guys ought to give the subs some more freedom and / or power over their content.
I'm curious why Cyborgmatt stopped doing the analysis on his own site. Any idea?
He was hired by onGamers. His own site didn't have any substantial money-making ads, nor any corporation to back him and give him actual wages. Now he gets a proper wage each and every single month - And I can hardly blame him. After being hired by onGamers, he's made better content more frequently. He's now able to fly out to all the events and interview players, casters and other community members, which he wouldn't've been able to at all prior to onGamers. The fact that he's not allowed to post his content to the community that it was created for is just... Balls. He's part of the community, and he's done so fucking much for it - But Reddit's admins don't care. It's a damned shame.

Can I mention things as a user? Idgaf if a writer advertises his site in posts. If it's good I'll upvote if it's shit I won't. So many Richard Lewis and thoorin article I've downvoted not because the author, bit because their crap or fluff. Same with slasher.
Slasher whether we like it or not is a pretty key part of our community. Sure he's a bit of a dick at times but he's our dick.
The problem is that the first 30 minutes of a post are important. If it gets upvoted it will show up on the frontpage of a subreddit and the post will be succesful.
If it's good I'll upvote if it's shit I won't.
Yep, that's correct. But by manipulating the votes (everyone at the office upvoting it) they are cheating the system and taking an unfair advantage over other posts.
Circlejerk/mob mentaility at its best worst.
We aren't that big of a subreddit, I go back two three pages and the is most of the lowest upvoted threads.

I find it interesting that you're concerned about this when you lot that run /r/leagueoflegends are so inconsistent and shitty about enforcing the rules on the subreddit's front page.
Not saying that vote manipulation is good (if that's what is happening), but it's hard to buy that you give a shit about quality when there's two Riot please posts for every ongamers post that hits the front page.
It's incredibly easy to claim stuff like this, but as of yet nobody has come with a satisfying solution. "Ban all suggestion posts" isn't one.
There needs to be a balance between the different types of posts and there will never be a composition that everyone will be happy about. At the moment I think we have a pretty good variety of content on the front page. Usually there's stuff like eSports news, suggestion posts, bug reports, gameplay video (both soloQ and eSports), fanart, soloQ advice, etc.
Edit: The one thing I think we could definitely improve on is the reposts on suggestions, without any new additions or whatever. It's hard to categorize these though, but we try to reduce the amount of repetitive posts.

Why don't you guys stop being nazis and let mods and the individual subreddits set how things should be? Coming from /r/Dota2, I can say for sure that the majority of our community likes ongamers and it's very convenient for us to check for their content on Reddit rather than making daily visits in to the website to check for news (in vain most of the times in case of there's no update).
If the admins really have a problem with ongamers then make their content not show up on /r/all while still allowing it to appear on the communities that want it. Don't know if that's currently possible, but it doesn't look like a feature that is hard to implement by a website as huge as Reddit.

What, that they had an article every now and then on our sub...? You could always just, you know, not fucking visit the article. In it's entirety, onGamers' dota content was liked by our sub. The fact that it's banned in it's entirety due to one person's actions in one sub is fucking bullshit. And the fact that they're not allowed to post their own content, which is made by community members for community members is, as Penn & Teller best put it; BULLSHIT!

Why are they banning people? It's like, every time something is good (Reddit), somebody feels like they need to come along and tweak it (introducing weird banning systems by moderators, which is one of the downsides of a traditional forum).
Slasher is a great community figure, and they're banning him? Wtf is this site? I guess it's time for the next-generation successor to Reddit to show up and push this one aside.
It's not a moderator function, it's an admin function. Last time Slasher was banned it was for vote manipulation.
Reddit is pretty simple, follow a few really basic overarching rules and you'll be fine.
the reddit.com admins did this, not the /r/starcraft moderators. subreddit mods can not ban a user from the entire website and make it so you can't see their profile.
