INSIDER PERSPECTIVE: many Chinese gamers are actually very sympathetic for InSec. What many of you don't know is that the Chinese servers are known for having "actors". "Actors" are players who intentionally feeds and get paid for doing it, just like match fixing. At the top solo queue ladder, rich gamers are willing to pay high premiums to get to challenger, and match fixing makes the journey much easier. Korean solo queue is known for try hard and when you experience games with actors on the enemy team, it's very frustrating.

Secondly InSec gets harassed a lot. This is almost like paparazzi and celebrities. What you saw is InSec swearing at Chinese players, but you'd be surprised how many times he's been called "Korean dog" on the Chinese server. InSec has been a pro player for so long, he's not that stupid. Just imagine how much harass it took to get those screenshots out of him.

I mean like what you are suggesting is ehm that this subreddit kinda holds ehm double-standards? Dude you are crazy!

lol yep. see the replies to this comment. Sums it all up.

Yeah people underestimate the amount of sheer hatred between countries of China, Korea, and Japan.

The only thing comparable over here (in LoL) would be the animosity that NA players felt for Brazilians before they got their own server. Nationalistic/racial spats between players weren't uncommon back then. But that's NOTHING compared to China/Korea/Japan.

So I don't doubt InSec has to deal with a ton of shit in game. Being a foreign pro makes you a big target, but being a 'cultural enemy' on top of that is a recipe for being harassed pretty heavily. I'm not justifying his actions, but I seriously doubt this was unprovoked. He probably just snapped after one too many incidents.

Chinese people don't hate Koreans though. Chinese solo q is known for being extremely toxic. People just want to piss insec off.

[–]Pasinius 13

There is animosity between the two races, its ignorant to say there isnt. However I disagree sb being 'sha bi' because Koreans use sb to mean 'ssibal' 씨발 and its more like 'fucking chinese' in this context.

Insec said "sb chinese" after someone else said "sb korean." Clearly, the other person meant "sha bi" because that's what a Chinese person would mean by saying that. sb is common speech in China, especially in league. Insec surely must have seen sb before and asked someone what it meant or looked it up already. Therefore, I believe insec simply said that in retaliation, which would imply the same meaning. Also, I don't think Koreans type "sb" when they want to say "ssibal."

Wtf who pays for that and why ??

There are many rich gamers in China who wouldn't hesitate to spend thousands of dollars on a single game. Even people who aren't wealthy would save their spending to spend it in games because the gaming world is a significant part of their lives.

Literally everyone says sha bi in china tho, even my 80 year old grandfather who is very conservative.

It's about as offensive as god damn/shit is in the English language depending on which province of china it is. It's become moreso of a synonym of stupid rather than a swear word, at least up in the north.

Thid is pretty important. What he said is not as strong as 'stupid cunt' in English.

But ma culture.... I'm so excited for the amount of ethnocentrism that's going to pop up during worlds. Ah, people are going to lose their minds when some Asian team doesn't shake hands or something that isn't customary for them to do.

Edit- And how could I forget, we're gonna need so much popcorn if LMQ goes to worlds. I'd like to go ahead and reserve a few threads over at /r/SubredditDrama

[–]The_After_Party 10 ポイント11 ポイント

Its nt ethnocentrism, its poor translation. Even if it literally means dumb vagina, there are better waya to phrase it when putting it into english. How are we aupposed to know ita common when the engliah translation used is incredibly misleading?

[–]Glurky_Spurky 1 ポイント2 ポイント

Yeah, for example calling someone a dumb pussy is way less offensive than dumb cunt. Even though it's basically the same thing.

I don't think the hand shaking thing was a cultural difference, they shook everybody else's hands and every other team knew to do it. I'm not saying that they did it intentionally to be offensive but I really don't believe they weren't aware it was custom.

Stupid cunt is not very strong in England, more like "idiot".

[–]Quazifuji 4

This is informative, bit I think there's a huge gap between "damn" and "shit". I'd say "crap", "hell", or maybe "ass" are in the same category as damn and match what you describe (theoretically vulgar but not at all severe and can be said in all but the most uptight company), while "shit" is most definitely a swear word.

I worded it bad, in the north where people are thought to be "crude", it's as bad as damn, aka no one other than the most an ally politically correct person would get super offended. Like my relatives would call me sha bi if i did something dumb.

In the south where people are more "pussy", there would be more people offended by it, where it's about as offensive as shit.

It's the equivalent of "idiot" or "dumbass". Media hyping up something just to get more views, which is the media's only goal.

Actually "sb" is not that offensive in Chinese, more like idiot in English...

      [–]Skymin_Flower 22 ポイント23 ポイント

Yes this is true. SB is a very common word in Chinese (although it is not very "refined"). It is kind of the go-to insult when calling someone stupid. But when someone says "stupid cxnt" in English it is far more offensive. This is a good example of why direct translate can cause issues. SB literally does mean "stupid cxnt" but the meaning is much less harsh than in English.

no that's not totally true. Someone may think sb means idiot, but others split the word into two(stupid and cunt) then sb means stupid cunt.

i think it varies, my family and i use "bai ci" (retard) as the go to insult and sha bi is what we consider a more severe curse word. and the chinese equivalent of fuck is "ta ma de", there's also "cao ni ma" (fk ur mother) and extended versions like "wo cao ni ma de bi wa sai". learn these and you can cuss anyone out in chinese.

Even if I tried to learn it, I still wouldn't be able to pronounce it properly, and would probable actually say something like "I f*cked my horse before breakfast."

      [–]Skymin_Flower 0 ポイント1 ポイント

It doesn't matter everyone will know what you mean xD

Wonderful thing about curse words really. They transcend language barriers. I can tell when someone speaking Russian is swearing at me, and they can tell if I am swearing at them even if neither of us speak the other person's language :D

I think the general consensus is that no one is mad at InSec being toxic but people are concerned because what he said brought up some bad relationship issues between Korea and China because they were calling out the country as a whole instead of the specific players.

You're going to get a lot of people who come into China and KR threads not understand how their regions are culturally. And where the hate and pride are. inSec joining a Chinese team was like a spit in the face for the Chinese teams.

Well tbf, the "Sb Chinese" was a reply to one of the person who said "Sb Korean".

After further investigation however, there’s a bit more to the story. Apparently, one of his opponents first said “sb Korean” in-game, to which of course the logical response is “sb Chinese”

Still think Insec didn't react professionally, he should have just ignored the whole thing. But I don't think this should be a big deal.

I highly doubt Insec was calling out China as a whole, it was more of a reply to the person in the first place.

        [–]Skymin_Flower 16 ポイント17 ポイント

Ok really... one thing people seem to be missing.

Translate it properly... sb Korean = "stupid Korean". Which means he is only referring to one Korean, the one he is talking to, Insec. When Insec responds with sb Chinese = "stupid Chinese", we don't really have a good way to say "one Chinese person" in English, but I will assume he is referring to only that one Chinese person.

Especially you have to consider that I am sure Insec's English is not perfect, and I'm sure neither is the English of the person insulting him. They may miss small nuances like this when they speak, and I am almost 100% sure that sb Chinese was not directed at the Chinese race as a whole, just the one Chinese person insulting him.

I don't think there was any concern. As far as I understand none of the east Asian countries have good relationship with each other in the first place.

So this is what the Koreans are bringing to China.
        A disgrace to Chinese eSports.
InSec is too impulsive. He should be cursing at the player, not the Chinese in general.

If these quotes are really representative of what the general fanbase is saying online, it seems like they're being pretty reasonable. If Helios said the same thing in NA solo queue the reddit thread would just be hundreds of people saying "omg helios is so toxic."

Uh, not really. Reasoning is hiding behind rude languages.

To be honest, I don't think he was directing the insult to ALL Chinese players. Typically people seek out differences from themselves in people when they are upset, he'd probably swear something about Americans if the player was defined as such.

Although I think people are reading too much into it, still isn't the best thing he could of said but like said in the article: he is human and most of the time venting helps.

at least he didn't bite people.

Well to give some context inside and outside of this incident.

Let's start with this incident, the term "sb" is common used in china, not only throughout our daily school lives, and it's even more common on the internet. They are some spoiled kids (there are lots of them, because single child policy) who take serious offence to the use of sb, which has happened to me on a personal level in the NA server when I said this to a fellow Chinese person as a joke. Point is, "sb" is not really all that offensive, it's basically like idiot, dumbass, stupid in literal translation, most of its use is not meant to offend, and it's used in basically all sort of contexts.

Here is some background on the hate. From China's hate against Korea started when Korea first started releasing their TV series into China, which got a lot of women hooked. Making a lot of men annoyed at the source, obviously at the time, this is not at all a big deal, it's basically like the western hate for Justin Bieber or the movie Twilight. How it became a big deal is when Korea made claims that many significant figures in China were Korean. It was at first backed by evidence, but eventually it became ludicrous. They might as well claim every single Chinese were born of Korea origin. A notable example would be, Confucius, who is a famous Chinese philosopher. As some of you may know, China is filled with national pride, so many people took strong offence to such claims, and dismissed it as Korean being dumb. Around that time, the racist term which is literally translates into "bat" is used to describe Koreans. To be fair, I do not know Korea's side of the story. What I do know from my time of studying world history as a fact, is that, Korea through its history was often a vassal of China, meaning self governed, but technically sworn loyalty to a bigger kingdom, and is bound to sending gifts and tributes every single year, or cycle. There are still many things I do not know, especially from the Korean perspective. I hope this will not be taken as racism, I'm only sharing what I know about the situation. If anyone has anything to add to this, feel free.

Tl;dr, this is just a solo q jab using the most commonly used word on the internet in china, hardly newsworthy. Then I gave a brief background of some china and korea hostility in recent years (honestly it's not serious, it's a joke compared to how much korea and china hates japan)

Wait, what? I don't know of a single Korean who claims that Confucius is Korean? Like in middle school and high school you take ethics and Korean history classes in Korean schools and in both you learn that Confucius is a Chinese philosopher. I think a large part of the dispute comes from the historical period which Koreans know as the Samgukshidae (Period of the 3 Kingdoms) and the kingdom of Goguryeo which contains a large part of land which is now part of China.

But yeah, honestly Korea and China haven't had much hostility recently but Japan tho.

Lmao, it was all over the chinese internet and news for months, trust me man. It happened. Not that anyone agreed, but it definitely happened.

To be honest with you though, us chinese people, me included, are incredibly prideful. Somebody probably took it the wrong way somewhere and spread it around like fire. I honestly don't know the details, but a lot of people took offence and stuff, I'm sure it's way overblown, just like this particular incident.

And yea, but japan doe. They have a red mark on their backs in Asia, everyone hates their guts. Interesting scenario with that one too. They tried covering it up by rewriting their history textbooks, and putting war criminals in their sacred shrine. Now if they reveal the truth, they lose votes and won't be elected, if they don't, people hate them. Politics at its finest.

It just strikes me as really weird that anybody in Korea would say that officially because all the government sanctioned textbooks say that he's Chinese and it's impossible not to mention like Confucius and other such scholars who are Chinese because they heavily influenced Korea? It just strikes me as weird from my perspective of having gone through the Korean education system and everything.

I can confirm that, it's not only Confucius, even some of the famous historic artifacts from China too. But it's not really that Koreans are claiming that mind you, if I recall correctly the statement was made from a government organization of some sort or some politician.

Huh I'd actually be really interested in reading this story because most of the stories you read in Korea are about Chinese scholars claiming that a Korean historical figure or artifact is Chinese a lot of the times.

That being said there are some very weird Korean politicians. Like there was a person who ran for president in 2007 saying he had an IQ of 430 and could teleport and shit so...Korean politicians are mostly pieces of shit anyways.

most of the stories you read in Korea are about Chinese scholars claiming that a Korean historical figure or artifact is Chinese a lot of the times

That's the problem really, both side's claim is biased so it's really hard to determine. On top of that, they had such close relations long ago, it's entirely possible for those things to turn up in either countries.

The Confucius incident caused an uproar since it was probably the most ridiculous example.

I live in Taiwan (which is somewhat related to China for those who don't know) and we have the same thing here too. Though it's kinda split two ways here.

Split in two ways in what sense? There is plenty of relation for china and taiwan both historically and now. I'm sure many people from mainland China, and Taiwan feels differently, but I'm just glad to see anyone who speaks Mandarin. We understand each other better in a verbal talk than people in Hongkong and those who speaks Cantonese.

Well there's mainly two sides, people who hate them or people who like them.

Some people here relate to China since we basically came from the same ethnic group. On top of that, the multiple instances of disrespect we get from Koreans during international events (ex: unfair judging, cheating).

Then on the other side we have people who likes Korean culture, mostly the younger generation, mainly due to K pop and Korean drama that's taking hold.

Slightly related note, we have a derogatory term for them here: 韓狗, which is basically "Korean dog".

One of the only people I don't blame for having blind hate for China is people from Taiwan. There are plenty of war veterans who lost the civil war and were driven out as outcasts from their homes. If I could, I'd pay respect to those soldiers who fought long and hard in the main war against japan.
Albeit it does makes me sad when I see twitch chat of blind hate of anti taiwan and anti china. It's really disgraceful to everyone else. It's like a family going out and having a fight with fist throwing around in a public restaurant. Idk, the whole situation is too complicated for outsiders to understand, and most of the people in china and taiwan don't even know the full story. Same country or not, we are of the same family, who speak and write the same language. In fact, I'd even venture to say based on language, we are closer than those who speak purely cantonese, which is basically a foreign language.... As for kpop and modern stuff, honestly, that's the same anywhere. We watch those here in NA now, people in china and japan are no exception.

Interesting fact: most people here dislike China more than Japan.

LOL, i believe that and frankly i'm not at all surprised. Especially with Taiwan not particularly keen on educating kids about what happened in WWII (and well, the reason for that is also very clear and understandable). Now the younger and dumber generation only know about anime and mangas, I'd even venture to say they might actually like japan than have any hostility at all.

Yep, that's exactly what's happening here. The history in this region is just too much of a crumpled mess.

I mean, I can see the issue. What are you supposed to tell the kids? Yea, uh, your dad died in the war fighting for our country, but we lost the civil war and is now driven out and that's why we are living here. The whole aftermath of the civil war probably clouded the whole WWII itself, which most people that's currently living in Taiwan has an elder who died, or fought, or been tortured by Japan in the war.
Then again, Japan also have somewhat of a complicated issue regarding the whole WWII, and how they teach their kids on what really happened. They are prideful, and can't bring themselves to do what Germans did, tell the kids their fathers was criminals, which is understandable if you were a Japanese, and it's not like they didn't suffer. They were the only country in the history of the world who's been nuked.

All in all, politics at its finest. So many people have so little knowledge regarding the whole big picture of Asia and is just jumping in on the blind hate is really saddening. There is really no one to blame except for the poor circumstances where basically no one was the winner. The entire politics in Asia is a mess. A lot of countries there put up with China because they have to, the reality is, they need China for their economy. Same idea with Japan, Korea and China puts up with them because they are realistic about the market.

I've realized long ago, it's pointless to even stop the hate train for this whole thing. The best I can do is not to become a hater, spread sympathy, and be understanding. I hope there comes a day where all Asians come together, ( China Korea Japan ), and overcome the differences. It'll be hell of a long shot though. Although the fact that Europe did it, despite their differences gives me some hope.

Not to disrespect our elders, but the only way that's going to happen is for the older generation to let go or fade away. My grandfather fought in the civil war and he even still has the military rank tattoo on him. Here in Taiwan we can still see the influences of Japanese colonization (even our presidential office building now is from that time).

Every country that's involved in this mess has a history of strong nationalism. Even today none of them could agree on what happened in history and what didn't. They really need to learn dwindling on history isn't really going to help anyone and focus on things like economy.

I'm not here to incite any hate, but yea, the hostility is way up there. People in China hate them too. It's a two way street. Multitude of circumstances made the whole situation very ugly.

sb doesn't really mean stupid cunt it is just a go to word for people who play stupid or is stupid in chinese. media always exaggerate

        [–]BaconBitz_KB 14 ポイント15 ポイント

Does anyone in this thread actually think this is a big deal? I definitely don't.

This shit happens all the time. On top of the fact that sb is a pretty common term. And it's not like he said anything nearly as bad as most players see on a daily basis like "go kill urself u adopted virgin porch-monkey fgt" or something. He just called some kid in solo queue a cunt.

You know what? Jing Zhang is a stupid cunt. Is he going to write an article on me now? No. Cause he's just trying to stir up shit about a pro player.

InSec is a fucking legend. But he's still just a player like any of us. Just because he's good at the game doesn't mean he's a fucking flawless saint. Nor should he be expected to.

For those of you who don't know anything about East Asian politics basically what happens is that Korea hates both China and Japan but will ally itself with China to hate on Japan, China thinks both Korean and Japan are somewhat inferior to them but will ally itself with Korea to hate on Japan, Japan hates both Korea and China and thinks that Korea and China ganging up to hate on them and their far right politicians is bullying and hates Korea and China even more.

That being said LOOOOOOL INSEC. Man, inSec used to be friends with Dosu who was like the original Apdo in that he was good but fucking toxic as fuck and inSec had a bad rep for being toxic as a motherfucker too.

Korean and Japanese hate is totally on a different level, shouldn't compare it to China Japan hate or China Korea hate.

Nah, China Japan hate is up on that level like Chinese people and Korean people will unite in hatred of Japanese people, especially recently with like the rise of the far right in Japan.

That being said, Japan never fully colonized China while they did Korea so yeah, Korean Japan hate is pretty strong.

Saying 'stupid Chinese' is something that can get many different interpretations. I sometimes say 'stupid brazilian' or 'stupid american' but by no mean every brazilian or american is stupid, obviously.

The best would be hearing what insec means with these stuff (and hope he's not lying). But as a diehard China's fan, i dont hate him at first... lets wait and see what happens.

ps* for some its pretty obvious, for other people itsnt. Chinese players on korean servers are not very well recieved. Some chinese players are friends with some korean players, but overall thei kinda hate eachother. 2 weeks ago i was watching LGD weiless stream (korean server) and his jungler completely ignored his lane and bashed at him with some english words, he only gave a blue to weiless' oriana after he killed 2 opposite players in a 1v2, but still wouldnt gank, play as a team, apologize or even recognize that he is not bad and that he won that game for them.

FYI, Chinese spam SB in online games and most people assume it's the generic noob comment. Saying it means cunt or whatever is BS, it's just the go-to word for newb in Chinese.

        who gives a shit

WOAH WOAH WOAH, let me clear ONE thing up:

While sb can be translated into "stupid cunt" on a word-for-word basis, it DOES NOT carry the same connotations in Chinese as "stupid cunt" does in English. Granted, it is an insult, but calling someone a "stupid cunt" in English is a lot harsher than calling someone "sb" in Chinese.

On the insult scale, it's probably equivalent of saying "idiot". Please take language differences into consideration, the title is a little misleading that way, and in my opinion is more condemning of inSec than he deserves.

Pretty sure insec is abbreviating the word "shibal" which is most similar to "fuck" in english. Its really common practice for a lot of koreans to just type "sb" and mean it. Just trying to clarify :)

Not sure how that is cussing out the ENTIRE nation when he said stupid cunt Chinese in response to stupid cunt Korean.

The pugs in the first place shouldnt have gotten all racy and shit because a professional Korean gamer is with them. Insec should have carried on about his business and ignore people like that but not everyone has the same tolerance.

Yes toxicity is bad and all, but it's only worse if you let it get over your head.

Sha Bi, actually directly translates to "stupid bitch". Would you be more offended at being called a "bitch" or a "cunt"?

These guys are kinda over inflating the gravity of the insult, although its still an insult.

Bi is literally the vulgar term for vagina in chinese so the direct translation is right (it is very different from the word for bitch, which is biao).

They just got the conotation wrong because the term is more widely used.

I remember the outplay Seraph did to Bjergsen couple weeks back and Bjerg said something along the lines of "fucking korean" on stream and nothing ever happened with that.

Clearly, both shouldn't have said that but this is just ridiculous, it honestly seems the Chinese fanbase are just being chumps because a Chinese pro was replaced with a Korean.

        [–]Enemyx 1

Bjerg is European, there is no racial beef between us and asia and bjergs statement was not really super serious, if anything going by world wars, china was allied with the allied EU nations and Japan was allied with nazi germany so if anything they had better history with each other than each other lol. There is more beef between EU nations just based on trivial shit thats not serious, but we come together when worlds arrives haha.

After further investigation however, there’s a bit more to the story. Apparently, one of his opponents first said “sb Korean” in-game, to which of course the logical response is “sb Chinese”. So case solved and yes, context always matters.

Edit I'm in no way condoning Insec's actions though. He should have just stayed quiet since he is new to the Chinese scene =/
