It doesn't matter what was done in the past. This is the present.

Like the saying goes, those who ignore history are doomed to be awesome because who even cares this is the present.

Step aside oldtimer, comments from "Just now" are the new hotness.

This is kind of why I dislike the editing of the Tom & Jerry cartoons. Mouse falls head-first into shoe polish bottle, black-face. Cat gets covered by a chute-ful of coal, black-face.

When I was a kid in the 80s and they were released on VHS, this stuff was kept in. I didn't get it. I thought it was just hilarious. And one of the few times Tom talked (though in retrospect, as a teen, I realized this was a rather racist southern black accent).

It always bothered me when Boomerang and Cartoon Network cut those scenes, which were just parts of the problem, such as never (or infrequently) seeing Bugs cartoons where he dressed in drag.

As someone who absorbed a rather unhealthy amount of Hanna Barbera and Warner Bros shorts growing up, the (no pun) white-washing of America's developing cultural history (and animated shorts were a media heavily influenced by American culture at the time), it seems disingenuous to cut them as if they never existed and were always PC.

As if people don't make offensive historical jokes that disparage other groups ALL the time. Jew jokes, Gay jokes, Women jokes, Native American jokes, Mexican (whether or not they're actually Mexican or from some other Latin American country) jokes, Asian jokes, Indian jokes, starving African children jokes, Irish famine/alcoholism jokes, Scots being the scum of the earth jokes, Russian jokes of all kinds, those are all fine and dandy

Check out the new guy!

I'm sorry but one group of people do not own anything.

You hear that, black people?! YOU DON'T OWN BEING BLACK.

Bullshit! I got my receipt right god damn here!

Argh what am I gonna do with all this shoe polish and burnt up cork now?!

Get a nice pair of Italian loafers and clean your silverware.

Burnt up cork?

Performers used to use burnt cork as make up before moving on to shoe polish and greasepaint.

there's a difference between actually blackface where it's used to make fun of black people, and "blackface" for a harmless joke.

But...doesn't the humor in that "harmless joke" completely hinge on making fun of Black people? How would he describe "bad Black face" vs. "good Black face?" The only "good" Black face I can think of is Tropic Thunder, and the reason that worked was because it was subversive and commented about casting bias in Hollywood (among other things).

Black face in only funny when it is either:

A. Acknowledge by everyone but the wearer that its fucking racist (i.e. Tropic Thunder, Be Kind Rewind)

B. A series of events happen to make it look like you're in black face.

or something similar.

One of the most painful movie experiences I've endured was sitting through Soul Man.

To achieve his dream of attending Harvard, a pampered teen poses as a young black man to receive a full scholarship.

Holy shit.

Yeah, it's pretty terrible, not even James Earl Jones can save it. Then again, some of the Redditors who complain about how scholarships are unfairly biased against White people might enjoy it!

Looks like the /r/WhiteRights movie of the month.

B also bleeds into a, so but the wear doesn't really know they are in black face.

There was an episode of Louie in which one of his daughters wore blackface to dress up as Frederick Douglass for Halloween because she really admired him.

I'll admit I found that really funny.

and Children, but racism is hilarious....when its really tiny or powerless....

It wasn't motivated by racism in that case at all though, it was well-intentioned, just ignorant of the historical baggage surrounding blackface.

I don't know that I love the implications of the joke, it plays a little too much into those stupid arguments that blackface isn't "really" racist, it's just racist because people are oversenstive about things that happened decades ago, as though that somehow validates blackface.

Then again, I think it also illuminates a lot about how we're kinda shitty at teaching our kids about racism because we teach it as something that happened way back when and then people like Douglass and MLK came along and solved it and it doesn't matter anymore.

I still laughed at it regardless.

Apparently it was based on his real life experience, because when he was little he wanted to be Frederick Douglass for Halloween and his mother wouldn't let him.

I'm quite fond of Dan Aykroyd in Trading Places as well. Although it's not commenting on anything. Except shitty disguises I guess.

Yeah, the problem most people don't seem to get about racist jokes is that the racism needs be the set up. Not the punch line.

Yeah, that really was the worst disguise--I'm not sure why they even bothered to do that, other than the hilarious little dance he gets to do with Eddie Murphy.

I'm not sure why they even bothered to do that

Because otherwise he would have been recognised by the guy they're trying to steal the suitcase from. DUH.

Because it was 1983 and they could.

Back then, classic comedy moment. Now...not so much.

[–]Klondeikbar 1

The only "good" Black face I can think of is Tropic Thunder, and the reason that worked was because it was subversive and commented about casting bias in Hollywood (among other things).

And even then I'm not entirely sure it was worth it. The people who actually understand that level of commentary, are the people who probably already understand casting biases in hollywood. Sure we got a chuckle out of the execution, but we really didn't learn anything new.

People who don't understand that bias, however, are really just going to be validated. To them, now they have a mainstream example of how blackface is ok.

Is that tradeoff worth it?

This reminds me of how much those "based on true story" movies have such a huge influence of the public perception of past events and people.

So you're really not allowed to laugh or make jokes, no matter how harmless, about anyone, because it's racist? Well, except white people, those are still acceptable targets and it's totally appropriate and funny to make fun of them. Americans and their overzealous political correctness are so weird sometimes.

I'm not saying people aren't allowed to. Of course they're allowed to. They're allowed to make the jokes, and I'm allowed to call the jokes racist.

Am I'm allowed to call you a humorless killjoy. Don't play semantics, it's tiresome. You know perfectly well what I meant. Unlike you, I don't believe any group of people is exempt from criticism or exempt from jokes. Have fun living your life walking on eggshells for fear of 'offending' someone.

I will happily live my life without ever donning blackface, and I don't really feel like I'm missing out on anything.

Better check your privilege, who knows what other offensive things you're doing right now without even realizing.

But yeah, how could I not see that a girl spreading Nutella on her face and calling herself Tupac is literally a fount of racial hatred worse than Hitler and the KKK combined! She should be imprisoned for hate crimes!

Oh, and I'm betting you and most of the people outraged about the blackface are white. Where would those poor minorities be without the white SJWs getting offended on their behalf?

You are strawmanning all over the place.

I think that episode of IASIP is a good example of the "blackface is okay in this context because the characters are dumb and they don't realize it's not okay" arguement.

When Mac is showering in black face and it washes off, all within the movie, is so good

Definitely one of the funniest parts, especially when in one of the later scenes, he is no longer wearing any blackface.

[–]ThatGuy_989 3 ポイント4 ポイント

John Oliver probably summed this up best on his show.

In those comments: white people explaining why theyre not racist

When there's no negative connotation why's there a problem with dressing up as someone who is another race, like the Orange is the New Black thing?

She dressed up as the character, not as a caricature, unlike everyone else in the video.

Her costume didn't offend me, but she probably should have realized it was going to get noticed.

Yeah, I just figure there'd be more (vocal) people on her side than against her.

It's such a controversial issue that you can't really speak on her side without people getting pissed at you. I don't think it was too bad but it was a stupid idea, there are plenty of other characters and costumes, why pick that one.

Why not?

there are plenty of other characters

She wanted to be that one. That's why. She loves that character and wanted to fit in with the other 9 people in her group dressing up as characters from orange is the new black.

It's like asking why women dress up as slutty nurse or why someone wants to dress up as a banana with a dick.

It has bad connotations due to history. So it's best to avoid doing it, yeah you still can but then you got to take the criticism that comes with it.

Like I said before - character vs caricature.

She shouldn't have apologized, she did nothing wrong, and anyone who was offended is ridiculous.

Well it's better to apologize because when the media is out for blood standing your ground is a bad idea.

Yeah, it was good for her career I suppose, but bad for society as a whole IMHO.

Absolutely zero reason to wear anything that darkens your skin.

You say that like it's a fact.

They wanted to look more like the character.

You shouldn't wear blackface to be Tiger Woods either

Sure you would. As long as you're not acting offensively as racist caricature I don't understand what the problem is. You're playing dressup, not mocking the race or human you're dressing as.

    I had a feeling I'd end up here :P

Do you think people that put Nutella on their faces and call themselves 2pac would consider historical context?

    I do....

    [–]big_swinging_dicks 3 ポイント4 ポイント

    cringepics argues about

    oh boy here we go

    blackface

    I'll pass thanks

    Historical context still don't real.

How is this different from Dave Chappelle or Eddie Murphy putting makeup on to look like white people and doing sketches?

Come on, Eddie's White Like Me skit is one of the best things SNL ever did... and IMO it takes a shot at everyone. How can you get upset over that.

That's weird. I made a post about this same thing just before you did, but mine got deleted with no explanation or message from the mods, and isn't showing up in my submission history.

That is weird. I guess contact the mods to find out what happened. I wouldn't have posted this had I already seen it here.

Yeah, I just sent them a message. This happened a couple days ago as well, where the submission completely disappears from my history, even if I log out and look at my user page. No message, no comment, nothing. Usually, if it's a repost, Semebay leaves a comment when the submission is deleted. But this is just super strange.
