Why do people still post photos of themselves donning black face on social media? Apart from the fact that the humor amounts to nothing but "huhuhu im black, funny huhuhu" do they not even consider the whole deeply racist historical context.. ugh

do they not even consider the whole deeply racist historical context.

No, is the answer to that.

Do you think people that put Nutella on their faces and call themselves 2pac would consider historical context?

Sorry it was more of a rhetorical question :P I'm just dumbfounded by how ignorant people can be

Black face can be funny like in Tropic Thunder, just like Dave Chappelle doing white face can be funny. These people are not though.

It's a bit more complicated than that. Tropic Thunder wasn't funny because it had blackface (or jokes about mental retardation), it was funny because it had delusional characters who thought those things were okay.

As for whiteface, well...it's barely even its own thing so much as it is a subversion of blackface.

White face can be very racists as well. Nick Cannon white faced a while ago, and in my opinion it's sort of racist because he was acting like a cliche stupid stoner. It sort of just depends on the context.

I'm fine with Dave Chappelle white facing, because he's doesn't make his white characters looks stupid, but just very squarish.

This made me respect Nick Cannon.

I don't think she's racist. I just think she looks like a fucking idiot. You don't have to make it something it's not. Yeah she made her face brown. Did she do it with the intention to be incredibly offensive to black people? I'm sure the answer is no.

I know a lot of racist jokes can often be carried about in a not funny way, but I think it's stupid to get butthurt over shit like this. I'm Irish (real Irish), and I don't freak out when I see a "Fighting Irish" mascot, or when someone makes a joke about the potato blight.

Each to their own, humor based on racism/suffering just isn't for everyone and I don't think it's stupid to be upset by it.

The fighting irish was a mascot created by the almost entirely Irish Catholic founders of the historical Irish catholic university. Why do people make this comparison. It was a satirical sense of pride.

Everything I've learned about blackface, I learned from Reddit. Outside Reddit I'd know nothing about it.

    What I know about it:

    1. It was sometimes used in stage performances, since in some environments white people were given ALL the roles, even the black ones

    2. The Dutch version of Santa Clause, something like Sinter Clause, had assistants kind of like elves, but they were originally all black, which had a rather slave-like vibe to it. For a while the excuse was that they were black from crawling through people's chimneys, and these days I think they're sometimes done in all kinds of colours, not just black.

These two things would definitely not deter me from using blackface, if I ever had a motivation to.

It was often used to make fun of blacks in an extremely racist and offensive way. Whites would wear blackface and dress up and act in the most ridiculously stereotypical, offensive and horrible way possible, all so the all-white audience could sit and be entertained because "haha, look how stupid black people are!" The jokes were totally malicious and not well-intended at all. That's why it's really frowned upon to wear it nowadays. You should definitely be deterred from wearing blackface, and I'm worried for you if you aren't. Check out the Wiki link the other guy posted
