More importantly when I said, "If you are doing it in a way that is indistinguishable from them, then you are indistinguishable from them." I was making a point about the way that race can be spoken about and joked about. The idea that "it's a joke! it's not serious! of course it's not racist!" is ridiculous because it's not the attitude of the person that makes something racist.

If I say, "white people deserve to die because white people are evil, just kidding!" The unseriousness doesn't protect me from the reactions that people have to my statements any more than it would with me saying "you are a fucking jackass who needs to learn how to read before you show up in a thread like this again, just kidding."

The ultimate result of this bullshit excuse-making about jokes and letting the past be the past is that for a lot of clueless people, they have no fucking idea how stupid AND racist they are. Letting them know is just doing them and society a favor.
