Reddit or Stormfront? The hip new game that’s sweeping the nation
Reddit upvotes, in real life.
Just wanted to let you all know about avery diverting — and damnably difficult — little game you can play on the internets: Reddit or Stormfront?
The premise is simple: You’re presented with an assortment of terrible comments, and you simply have to guess whether each one came from the hive of whiteboy bigotry known as Reddit … or the hive of white supremacist bigotry known as Stormfront.
It’s actually really hard. I’ve been playing it off and on since last night, and I’m barely doing better than pure chance.
The game was evidently inspired by the funny/disturbing Reddit-critical subreddit, SRSsucksOrStormfront. You might also enjoy perusing MRMorWhiteRights.

Yeah, I’m not very good at that game, either. X_X
Also, those white dudes are fucking creepy. I so wish I could flip them off.
Wow. I am really bad at that game.
This game makes me sad. :(
On the Free Republic (where the oldest and most pathetic regressives on the internet hangout) mockery thread at Something Awful we play a similar game, Freep or Stormfront. Weirdly enough the former is often more openly racist than the openly racist hate site.
I got 100% last night, but I only did like 6 of them. I think the trick is that the worse, more racist, and more unhinged it is, the more likely it is that is came from Reddit. Which, goddamn, if that’s not a reason to dissociate yourself from Reddit, I don’t know what is.
That’s a hard game!
I played and didn’t do very well.
Yep, I’m going to continue to stay away from Reddit.
I’ve done a couple of dozen, and I’m just barely over 50%. I can’t play for too long at any one time because it’s so hard, and I can’t figure out any simple rules for distinguishing the quotes, despite having spent way too much of my life reading terrible Reddit comments.
Bee, check your email!
I think those are too horrible for me to want to keep going :( Pretty sucky game, other than highlighting how terrible both the sites are.
I ended with a 40% right.
Maybe when someone tries to hide nasty prejudices it doubles back.
Whenever I see games like this I think of a less depressing one.

Also, the racist or really racist game is ugh. It’s weird that the Stormfront people are more cognizant of the fact that other people can read what they say on the internet.
Something tells me that no pony fictional or otherwise has had lips in its name.
I don’t think my score (44%) was very good on a quiz that is “either…or”
I ended at about 78%. I found that the trick was if they seemed to be arguing with someone it was more likely reddit. If they seemed to be more expanding on WHY x race is terrible, or in some way seemed certain that their opinion would be well received, it was more likely stormfront. Also, stormfront had more classic style racism and reddit had more internet “haha im so edgy” style racism. Not 100% of the time obvs.
i’m a mod at /r/MRMorWhiteRights and even i suck at this game.
I’m at six and so far, only one of the terrible comments has been from stomfront, and it seemed rather tame in comparison with the ones from reddit.
Reddit is such a cesspool.
I think the difference isn’t really in the content, but the way it’s phrased (in particular, if it looks like they’re trying to get upvotes).
Hokes, I *started* /r/MRMorWhiterights and I lost. Miserably.
We need a support group!
I would have had a better percentage, but I didn’t realize that the hatred of Romani people was so big on Stormfront. I know they’re hated on Reddit, but I thought Stormfront was more US-centric and I didn’t think that particular form of bigotry was as popular here as in Europe. TIL, I guess.
Cloudiah, the Romani hate is particularly witless. According to the anthropological research I’ve read, they are originally from what is now India, which makes them more Aryan than most Americans. Of course, evil racist wastes of skin are not motivated by rational considerations.
I’m not going to try playing the game. I’d like my breakfast to stay down.
After batting 0 out of 6, I threw in the towel.
Well, here’s a disturbing piece from the SPLC on the number of racist murders committed by Stormfronters: http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/news/white-homicide-worldwide
Holy shit, just when you think Stormfronters are just losers, then you’re reminded that they’re violent losers.
Unfortunately, I did really well at this game and played to the end. Familiarity with Stormfront and how the members word their comments was a big help. As previous commenter noted, many members are pretty savvy with how they are perceived and that their comments are readily available for anyone to see.
I’d rather not be as familiar with Stormfront as I am (or the creepy little recesses of Reddit) but I teach introductory Critical Culture & Race classes and knowing the wording and opinions can be helpful in diffusing potentially circular (and time consuming) arguments in and outside of the classroom.
Plus, I live in an area where there are large and active Aryan and White Nationalist groups operating, so I like keeping an eye on what they are up to.
On the up side (I think) I also did really well on the MLP game, so thanks opium4themasses for a little antidote to the poison.
It’s fair to assume that anyone killed in the Holocaust is hated on Stormfront.
I got 10 out of 29 for 34%. Then I got this:
@katz, Fair point, that. Also, I see you got more adorable kitties! All boys?
Shame katz isn’t closer or I’d offer to go babysit the kittens when she’s busy.
(I’m not allowed to foster kittens, landlord would be most displeased if I tried.)
2 boys and 2 girls, and the mom’s orange too! They will go SO fast.
So cute. My very first cat was an orange tabby, and I have such a soft spot for them.
This was actually pretty difficult. I’ve generally overlooked a lot of the racism on reddit – I’ve seen plenty of the misogyny and homophobia, but I was luckily unexposed to the race stuff. Ugh, what is wrong with the world.
I know this is off-topic but I love orange tabbies too, every orange kitty I’ve met or lived with always had such great personalities. I hope a little kitty talk is welcome after the hideous bile we’ve subjected ourselves to.
Kitty talk is always welcome on this site.
Kitty talk is always welcome.
I have definitely found the right place then :)
Biscuit is our ginger baby, and he is the sweetest, happiest cat I’ve ever had. Of course he only has two settings–complete freakout or total lovebug, but he’s growing out of freakiness.
I got 60% on the quiz, and then it told me I’d gone through all the questions.
The quote about gypsies was easy to identify as being from /r/worldnews, unfortunately.
@misery
probably not best to use g**sies, since it is a slur :/
My mom’s orange tabby w/white follows her around like a duckling. He’s so sweet. The poor guy was stuck in a shelter for four years before she finally adopted so I guess he’s really grateful to her for finally getting a good home.
Cute Overload defines orange tabbies as “MARMIES: The Best. Cats. EVAR.”
I saw that SPLC finding mentioned on Pharyngula (that or RS) – I wondered if you’d seen it, David.
I was torn between Mads and an orange tabby at the shelter. Wish I could have brought both home! (I ended up asking Mr K which kitty, and he said Mads.)
Marmalade cats are absolutely the best ever.
I spent my childhood in a home made heavenly with two of them. Being little kids, sis and I gave them cute names (so we thought). They were from the same litter, one quite dark — like the jar of marmalade you made years ago and forgot at the back of the pantry, the other a beautiful classic orange marmalade. Dad wanted to call them Pete and Re-Pete, but we wouldn’t let him get away with a permanent dad joke.
And then my sister brought another one home when they were about 8 years old. He was divinely beautiful, classic orange with a white bib and soft glossy fur a bit longer than the other two. And super clever. (The other two were noticeably unimpressed.)
I did a little photo retrospective about my last litter.
Orange tabby kittens? I really wish
my husband wasn’t allergic to cats.
::Crosses fingers and hopes that all that formatting works.::
It took me 7 questions to get one right, and that was only because I thought “Oh? Saying shit about rape? Must be reddit”
Yeah…
Y’know, I’m not doing -awesome- on that quiz, but I found a quick trick: the Reddit ones usually give the impression that they expect/hope actual Black people are in their audience, reading their crap. The Stormfront ones give more of a ‘closed doors’ impression, as of a private conversation Black people aren’t perceived as attending. It’s… Interesting?
Even with all the tips in this thread, I still only did as well as chance.
I gave up after about a dozen questions and getting them mostly all wrong. I guess I’m at a bit of a disadvantage because I only tend to go on reddit to look at pictures. Oh well.
I think with a quiz like this you need to decide to answer a minimum number like 20 or 25 questions before you start, so that you’re not tempted to terminate the quiz once you’ve obtained a lucky/unlucky streak that improves or worsens your score. And obviously if there are only 29 quotes (?) then it’s not too onerous to answer every single quote, but couldn’t they use a greater sampling of quotes? I decided to answer 20 in a row and got 12 correct and 8 incorrect (i.e. 60%), though more often than not I was answering ‘Reddit’.
Podkayne, I tried to apply that logic – that a quote identified as being in response to a black person would tend not be on Stormfront – and was surprised by at least one quote like that which was actually identified as being from Stormfront. So even applying rules like that is not a certain approach to getting a good score.
66%, And I don’t read either… I judged the comments with worse grammar, random capitalization and caps lock abuse to be Reddit and obviously this worked better than guessing. :D
There is a large orange tabby sitting on my feet as I type.
He is the sort of cat that, if you push your foot under him, settles back down around it like a pile of gently-whipped cream on a warm strawberry shortcake.
Well, I can tell Dickens from Bulwer-Lytton a good nine times out of ten, so I figure I’ve got an okay chance at this. Thanks for letting me know about it.
Tried the game. Sucked at it. I guess I’m not very good at this racism stuff.
As for orange tabbies, I’ve never had one, but my step-gran does. His name is Marley, (after Bob, of course!) and he’s such a sweet little suck! If there is a human lap available, he will be on it in a matter of seconds.
I managed to get about 70 percent. I don’t know what that says about me. It’s telling the more vile were from Reddit.
