You are correct that many of the recent changes have spurred many Reddit users to find alternative websites. I saw Whoaverse posted and decided to check it out. If you want this to become a true alternative, I would suggest recognizing many of the things that Reddit did wrong to displease the userbase (censorship, vote system modifications, ect..)

As for the money, you could always add advertisements to help cover costs. I honestly don't believe, if placed properly, ads would stop people from joining and being active, especially if you offered a way to remove them (for a price of course). Also wouldn't hurt to have merchandise (tshirts, coffee mugs ect..) with the Whoaverse name/logo on it that users could purchase that would also help cover the costs AND help with exposure for the site.

I am unfortunately not a programmer or I would assist with updating/completing the scripts. I do however have experience with managing websites and being user support (my real job is an account manager for a digital software company), so if you would like to talk or bounce some ideas off me, just let me know.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 16 points (16/0) ago

Thank you for your feedback.

I learned a lot from Digg/9Gag/Reddit mistakes and the most important thing is to not make any changes unless people specifically requested them. I can promise that whoaverse will not change anything unless people actually request and vote for those changes.

I have the full rights for the whoaverse mascot (I drew it myself) and so far I only printed 1 t-shirt and some stickers for myself. I am mostly interested in the technical side of things, so if someone else could set up the merchandise and run it - that would be awesome.

What do you think about registering a non-profit foundation? This would make it easier to accept donations and run things. Is the procedure to register such foundation in US difficult/costly?

[–] nimik 0 points 10 points (10/0) ago

You could do a non-profit, but you would have to create a mission statement about what the cause of the non-profit is for. Alternatively, you could register as a LLC, which gives you (and partners and employees) protection from company debts, and allows you to accept donations and make a profit. A non-profit would allow donations to be tax deductible. A LLC would require to pay taxes (assuming profit is made) but it is quite easy to do.

There is a lot of paperwork to file as a non-profit, plus having to prove that you do qualify. A LLC on the other hand, is pretty easy to file and only a few forms to fill out.

Here is some more info about LLC vs Non-Profit: http://smallbusiness.chron.com/difference-between-nonprofit-organization-llc-746.html

As for the merchandise, there are a few places I know of that can help, but I'll look into it for you and see what I can come up with.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 6 points (6/0) ago

LLC sounds doable. I would like to do this in partnership with someone as being the sole owner of such a company freaks me out. Big time :)

[–] Unicorn 0 points 6 points (6/0) ago

Yeah, having that liability on your shoulders is not worth it. I was thinking of starting my own reddit, and actually bought a domain yesterday until I heard of your website. While reading up on business structures I was worried if I choose sol prop then all the liability is on me, and I definitely do not want that.

[–] ShittyCommentBot 1 points 8 points (8/1) ago

You should just accept bitcoin donations for now. Put a QR somewhere, or make a coinbase "accept money" page

[–] JoyousCacophony 1 points 4 points (4/1) ago

That's actually a great idea. Since Bitcoin is taking off, may as well implement it up front and not wait.

[–] G0D 0 points 1 points (1/0) ago

You're assuming that the OP needs to register as a legal business entity in the US, which might not be the best option.

[–] Unicorn 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

It is the best option actually, to be able to not get into legal binds, one needs a medium to accept money. a LLC is one of the easier options where the liability is not on the individual who created it. Going the route of non-profit is not the best because the paperwork is a bitch and can be declined if filed improperly which happens a lot.

[–] Themeanbeaver 0 points 5 points (5/0) ago

Really nice to see what you did here. reddit is done, they pretty much sterilized the site of any intelligent discussion. Conde Nast's bullshit ad site is what remains. I will submit here. I for one would gladly donate to you just to have a site without censorship-,especially the rampant censorship of political and socioeconomic discussions on Reddit.Thank You for doing this.

[–] EbonyDelight 0 points 1 points (1/0) ago

I agree I hate how all the racist white people where posting completly bias stats.

[–] Orangutan 0 points 15 points (15/0) ago

That's why I'm here : )

p.s. we need to get whoaverse on the AddThis plugin so users can find content online and then press add this and submit it to whoaverse.

[–] dec8ur 0 points 12 points (12/0) ago

I think that reddits biggest mistake is that while it is powered by its users, it feels undemocratic. Simply allowing users to vote on sitewide changes and the mods for subs will go a long way to making this a viable site in the long run

[–] until0 0 points 8 points (8/0) ago

Agreed.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 10 points (10/0) ago

Agreed. So be it. All changes will require community approval.

[–] dec8ur 0 points 7 points (7/0) ago

the thing of it is you have to make the way that people are able to vote for these things hard to game. like the people who vote have to on the site for a certain amount of time and be active users, that will cut down on vote gaming

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 5 points (5/0) ago

Sounds like a good idea. I will think about a way to circumvent vote gaming by new users.

[–] JoyousCacophony 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

It's also a hard idea to implement. 2nd accounts, lurkers deciding to jump in... Hard to stall people that want to immediately participate.

[–] live_free 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

I too agree; and am also from reddit of the same name. The only problem is sometimes there are genuine concerns that may be, well, not well received. An easy example is dox-dropping or other privacy violations.

Funny enough, what we are discovering here, is in some ways what our fore-fathers did upon creating a state. The goal is democracy; that being representation of people. But at the same time mob-rule, or majority rule, are undesirable as the can suppress the will of a minority unfairly. In an effort to combat this a site/government drew up a charter/constitution in which there were unalienable rights.

If we could ever wish to have a truly free, open, and responsive community build upon aggregation we need ground rules. I for one would be in favor of freedom of speech to the extent it does not violate the privacy of others.

Atko: If you are serious about this endeavor, first I want to say thank you, secondly please allow us to donate, and last but not least, open a thread discussing what this charter should be. I.E. What's our constitution?

[–] Gormogon 0 points 10 points (10/0) ago

I'm a knee-jerk Redditor. Just show me where to donate. Please stick with it, your site can be the hero that we want, and need.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 6 points (6/0) ago

Hi and welcome! There is currently no way to donate (well, I could open up a bitcoin wallet or paypal account) and no need for money (yet). The server that is currently hosting whoaverse should serve a few thousand simultaneous users perfectly fine (please complain if you notice any availability problems). The only place where money is needed would be to scale things up in order to serve more people. Maybe it would be a good idea to start saving up, but I guess some form of legal entity should be formed prior to taking further steps. I am open to suggestions.

[–] Tuna_Railgun 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

You need to either incorporate or form a non profit. From a financial standpoint having it as a non profit would make it easier as you would have more incentive for community support channels and less risk.

[–] raka_defocus 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

I used rocketlawyer for my last LLC, they set everything up for $150.00 USD

[–] hithereyoulookswell 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

I'm new here too after eight years on Reddit. I just want to say that this really reminds me of Reddit a few years ago, i.e. quality content, a manageable and higher quality comments section, and a healthier balance of images to other content.

I also really like 'discuss' rather than 'comment' - a subtle difference, but telling!

P.S. I promise I'll behave and try not to ruin things.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

Eight years? I have been a redditor for 2 and wow... I feel honored to see such reddit veterans here. Welcome to whoaverse!

[–] ShittyCommentBot 0 points 9 points (9/0) ago

woo hoo!!, I get to be here at the beginning!!!

[–] PuttItOut 0 points 8 points (8/0) ago

Just took a look at the code base. C#! I like it. I've been a .NETer for ever so just wanted to say good job, I'm impressed.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 5 points (5/0) ago

The code needs a lot of improvement (specifically dependency injection, unit of work pattern etc) and optimization, but thank you very much!

[–] exisredditus 0 points 8 points (8/0) ago

See my username for why I am here. Wanted to check things out, plant a flag, and hopefully make this site grow. Not a programmer but am willing to help any way I can. Best of luck!

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Thank you so much and welcome to whoaverse! :)

[–] Reddit_is_dead 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

Yep!

[–] Jet 0 points 8 points (8/0) ago

Hiya! You're doing fantastic work over here. If you ever get the funds to make this website handle new users, I'll probably end up moving here. Reddit's become quite the shithole.

Can I make a feature suggestion while I'm here?

One of the main things people liked about reddit's old system is that they could see the upvote/downvote ratio on comments, just like on posts, using third party plug-ins. I think it would be wonderful if you could implement that feature by default.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 6 points (6/0) ago

Hi! Thank you for these kind words. The upvote downvote counts are already implemented and visible (well, only if you check site source), but I could add this ratio next to the points part. Would that work?

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

Could you please make a screenshot of this page and photoshop in (use ms paint or another tool) example of how you would like the ratio to be shown. Thanks!

[–] Jet 0 points 7 points (7/0) ago

Yes, sure. To MSPaint! Okay, just gotta click something there, move a few things there, whoops that didn't work, Ctrl + Z... Here we go!

http://i.imgur.com/O1L9vDp.png

Obviously, that is very rough... but it's the best I can do with a crappy photo editing software.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 6 points (6/0) ago

Awesome, thank you. I will implement this and roll an update in about 5 minutes.

edit: Done. I hope this is what you were aiming for :)

[–] Jet 0 points 5 points (5/0) ago

That's wonderful. Thank you very much!

[–] NinjaKlaus 0 points 6 points (6/0) ago

I don't wish to step on any toes here, I like this feature but think it would look better as (5|0) instead of (5/0). The straighter line makes it look cleaner to my OCD mind. Although I like the function as is as well. Thanks for being here all the same, it's nice to have alternatives!

[–] lordkabal26 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Woo, Points, and without vote fuzzing!

[–] DocHopper 0 points 7 points (7/0) ago

First of all, you need to give the comments box a different color outline. I can;t ever find it. Second, every time I close my browser and reopen, I have to log back in. It's supposed to "remember me." Third, I can't see a list of my subscribed subs.

For the most part, Reddit was perfect before they started censoring everything and removed the vote visibility. How come this site doesn;t have vote visibility yet? Seems to be the straw that broke the camel's back as they say...

[–] PuttItOut 0 points 8 points (8/0) ago

This is an alpha site from what I know. Small team and working on things.

[–] Anchy 1 points 6 points (6/1) ago

One man team for now i think! So Atko does it all in his free time so yeah.

[–] JoyousCacophony 0 points 7 points (7/0) ago

I'm miserable at anything code related and can't be any use there, but if you need any admin help, I'd be more than happy to pitch in.

If this site lives up to it's potential (and throws some new paint on the walls, gets a little more organized), I feel it can certainly become a home for Reddugees.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

Thank you! By admin, do you mean moderation of default subverses or administrative work in general? I will take any help which I can get because I simply can not (and do not want to) do everything myself :)

[–] JoyousCacophony 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

Any of the above.

I've got moderation experience from the other site (nothing monstrous, but a decent amount/sized subs). I also don't mind doing administrative work in general.

[–] joe6pak 0 points 7 points (7/0) ago

I have a significant bunch of hardware left over from a prior project, and I can arrange low cost colocation. Let me know if interested.

[–] joe6pak 0 points 6 points (6/0) ago

/u/joe-6pak on reddit, also

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

Thank you! This is a great offer. I would like to stay clear of hosting on self-maintained hardware because of possible scalability issues. Some sort of cloud solution would be the best option in the long run imho (Azure?). Maybe you could provide a backup service of some sort? We can talk more, drop an email to team@whoaverse.com if you feel like it.

[–] CantankerousMind 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Cloud is too expensive. You may as well purchase a new server because you'll be spending the same amount over a few years.

[–] joe_12265 0 points 6 points (6/0) ago

Can't you just start a kickstarter or similar?

somesome of the upgrades reddit makes?

Obviously we don't like the recent removal of vote totals. No idea if people will stay mad long enough to migrate. Guess we'll see. I always thought the power of reddit was that if you don't like something you make a subreddit and change it. But what do you do when there is a sitewide change you don't like? Hmmmm.

[–] gozer 0 points 5 points (5/0) ago

you could make a post like.."help wanted"

I guess there would be some people wiling to help. We need a place to go. And this is up and running.

What kind of help do you need ?

There is a lot of talent around..and this looks like fun project. Just do not go corporate. When big corporations start to influence stuff...digg and reddit happen

And..take it easy...no biggy

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

Good idea. I will post a detailed help request asap outlining some of the burning issues that need attention where I could use help.

If I don't go corporate or build a foundation, I am personally responsible for any legal troubles users may cause. I don't want to go to jail :)

[–] Unicorn 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

Yeah don't listen to anyone telling you not to create some sort of business out of this. That is the only way to legally protect yourself. These morons are not aware of this and probably don't care if you got into legal trouble at all. I am a cynic but my words bear truth.

[–] JoyousCacophony 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

I would think they're referring more to turning to some mindless corporate monster devoid of any thought that doesn't lead to lining toilet paper with hundred dollar bills rather than creating a corporation. :)

There is certainly a business here as long as it's cultivated and supported. The potential for legal trouble is definitely something that needs to be considered and prepared for. It's just part of the territory, unfortunately.

[–] shaun 0 points 5 points (5/0) ago

I take it there aren't that many users to begin with...since I was able to get my name as a username haha. I will be using this site a lot more.

[–] Tuna_Railgun 0 points 5 points (5/0) ago

As an alienated redditor, the censoring lead to quality issues with whom would bother in certain regards.

As a person with hope, I wish you the best if you truly want to expand. If you are looking for help with direction, crowd sourcing like this and making it an organization based on those principles will certainly prove a blessing.

I'd love to help you, I have applied myself to studying sales over the years, working for myself out of farmers markets, seeing what works and studying people. I'm mostly interested in the reflections other vendors have along with concerns from my customers about our society and direction.

With that said, I'm curious as to how far you are willing to go. You have a very unique opportunity here to capitalize, and you know that. I would like to help you if you are willing, but there is much to discuss. Mostly pertaining towards what type of corporation or organization you want. Regardless, kick starting is available and you already have the viral option to go from an alpha and grow when your ready. Identifying these steps and working towards those ends if crowdsourced could take very little time.

[–] AssuredlyAThrowAway 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

Hi,

Really like what you're up to here. Would love to help with what I can. Let me know :).

[–] adhdferret 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

Ha knew I would see you here.

[–] AssuredlyAThrowAway 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Been looking for a good alternative for a while. Not a big fan of Antique Jetpacks :)

[–] adhdferret 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

I wonder if you remember me. I was a person that got the heavy hand of an admin shadow ban. Was about 4 months ago. When the while sandy hook thing was happening and that guy posted all that info. Then admin came in and shut it down

I was the one demanding an apology from cupcake1713 lol I didnt get it in case you were wondering.

[–] AssuredlyAThrowAway 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

Your SN is familiar due to the ferret (and because I used to use a torrent site called feedthe.net, and for some reason the first part of your name reminded me of it); yea Alex is intense. Theories abound that she plays a bigger role in Alexis' shenanigans than previously thought.

Sorry to hear about the shadowban though.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 5 points (5/0) ago

Awesome! Can you write a press release or help get some articles about whoaverse get published? Please drop an email to team@whoaverse.com with ideas and info on how to get started.

[–] adhdferret 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

The whole structure of reddit is breaking down. Most of us have realized that it is just a sham. There is no community in there. The subs mods dont care about anything but control of content and easy workload.

The admin team is the worse. They have no accountability and shadow ban anyone that questions them. And when you ask why no responce. This seems like a viable alternitive honestly. I like the layout myself. I also like the mascot. This could be something great.

One question how do you make a subverse? My family and I collect lego and I didnt see that. Was wondering if we asked you or made one. It says you can make them but I dont see how to.

[–] NinjaKlaus 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

On the main page it says something like create your own subverse on the right hand side.

[–] adhdferret 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Hmm I am on my phone so I didnt see it I will look again thanks

[–] NinjaKlaus 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

I see, I just saw that on my phone. So if you want it here's a link. I hope that's allowed, I don't have a markup thing to show me how to link it properly.

http://whoaverse.com/subverses/create

[–] adhdferret 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

Yeah I had tk switch to desktop view. I made a lego one yay. Now to get people interested. I posted some content. One being a pic of pur collection....some of it. We have heaps. Oh oh guess what I can type alot now and not have that bot chase me...

Alot, alot, aaaaaaaaloooottttttt.

[–] raka_defocus 0 points 4 points (4/0) ago

whoaverse gold?

On a serious note why not charge a small fee to enable extra features on subs. If I had a pre configured stylesheet and the ability to put my own banner (or ad) on the side bar and header I'd be willing to pay $5 or $10 a month.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Sounds like a great idea. Would people be ok witb subverse admins placing their own ads? That way, community gets something back for being active and using the site.

[–] raka_defocus 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

I think as long as there is transparency it would be ok, you could run your own ads for non premium subs and use that revenue for maintenance costs. I think a small investment encourages people to stay active . This place has a ton of potential, and a lot of us are done with reddit. It's the digg exodus all over again for many of the same reasons.

[–] AssuredlyAThrowAway 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

No don't go down the path of letting mods monetize; that has bad news bears written all over it. Think about what /u/cinsere did with /r/trees.

[–] CantankerousMind 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

I have been programming in python for about a year.

I would be happy to lend you a hand if you need it.

Link to the github? My github username is wykleph if you want to add me as a collaborator.

[–] CantankerousMind 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Oh, maybe not. Doesn't look like you are doing anything with python :(

Found the github and whatnot. I'll keep an eye out to see of there is anything I can help on though.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 1 points (1/0) ago

Hi and thanks for offering to help. You could maybe checkout current javascript frontend and see if there is anything you can optimize/improve.

[–] lordkabal26 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

Having the features of RES (Reddit Enhancement Suite) built in would be awesome for one. See if you can get in contact with honestbleeps over on reddit he may be willing to work with you (don't quote me, it's just an idea)

Hopefully this can turn into a honest to god replacement for reddit since I don't see them reversing the change that caused the influx of us over to here

[–] crimsonsun99 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Please give us a reddit competitor... As long as you stay in ultimate control and don't get suicided... We need someone to keep a watchful eye over our new home.

[–] XxionxX 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Instead of donations could you make an optional 'purchase server time' button? It's not a donation and you wouldn't have to fight the non-profit issues.

Edit: Sweet site btw.

[–] jd 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Oh man, I'm excited.

[–] Anonymous 0 points 3 points (3/0) ago

Does this have vote fuzzing like reddit?

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 1 points (1/0) ago

Nope. All points are visible right away. Please don't make any spam bots :)

[–] Anonymous 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

Sounds good, thanks for the quick answer!

[–] Edgewalker 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

do a Kickstarter know!

The iron is hot and you're in a great position to do this!

[–] conspiracyfox 0 points 2 points (2/0) ago

I was incredibly excited about this website initially.

A reddit clone which doesn't censor content or compromise peoples privacy?

Incredibly disgusted to see the admin already censoring completely legal discussion and boards being created.

I won't be staying.

[–] Atko [S] 0 points 1 points (1/0) ago

I will be looking into legal repercussions of allowing racism and other types of hate speech on whoaverse. I do feel that censorship is wrong and that the only way to better ourselves is by learning and engaging in discussion. I will have to research where the lines need to be drawn because I do not want to be personally liable for the consequences of allowing free speech without any censorship.
