That's the big freak out?

Why does anybody care?

Update: looks like there's a 50/50 split on "who cares" vs. "It's a big deal"

I still don't see all the fuss.

People couldn't care less about the posts, but they've removed the exact number of upvotes/downvotes for comments, but there's no % on comments, so it's impossible to gauge anything from the comments.

That's cause he's wrong. It is this (What it looks like now, I don't have a pic of the old way):

For PC users that had RES installed, those two question marks on the far right used to indicate upvote/downvote numbers and now they're just the question marks.

[–]Erephnex 20

Its the RES users who want it back because res wouldn't just display the normal amount but the exact up and downvotes.

Example:

Without RES: 165 points x minutes ago

With RES: 165 points x minutes ago (183|18)

The first number in the brackets is the amount of upvotes and the second number the amount of downvotes the comment received.

[–]11_11_is_a_lie 3 ポイント4 ポイント

Yeah now it just says: 165 points x minutes ago (?|?)

If you have RES installed then all you see is (?|?) next to each comment as opposed to actual number of upvotes and downvotes. For example, (25|9)

RES (Reddit Enhancement Suite) used to show how many upvotes and downvotes a comment had, so if something was at 0 you knew it was 30 upvotes, 31 downvotes and thus popular instead of just a skipped over comment.

Now it says ? upvotes ? downvotes

Same on Reddit Sync. Not like I really cared about it anyway.

[–]tell_me_im_funny 8 ポイント9 ポイント

got enough answers there m8?

[–]I_cut_my_own_jib 6 ポイント7 ポイント

They used to show you the net upvotes, total number of upvotes, and total number of downvotes for every link and comment. Now they only show you the net upvotes. It doesn't really matter for posts with thousands of upvotes because reddit automatically balanced a lot of upvotes with "fake" downvotes so that there aren't posts with 30000 net upvotes. But for small comments or less popular subreddits, the auto downvotes weren't really an issue and thus these numbers (total number of upvotes and downvotes on a post/comment) were much more important.

If you have RES, it would not only show the comment score, but also the up and down votes. A post that has a score of 8 could have 10 upvotes and 2 downvotes, which RES would show as (10|2). Obviously there's a difference between (10|0) and (100|90), and with RES, you could see that difference. Normal Reddit displays both of those as a score of 10. RES now displays (?|?), and considering it's the feature most people installed RES for, it's understandable they're pissed off about it.

Reddit Enhancement Suite has a function that displays the total number of up votes and down votes on a post. They currently read (?:?) Where they used to say (20:5) for a fifteen point comment.

So people can see more easily who they should be agreeing or disagreeing with.

/s

You can still see if someone has a bunch of points so that doesn't change much

[–]Smugjester 23

Because now we can't see how many people actually give a shit care about a comment. If a comment is sitting it 1 point, it could be either 2 upvotes and 1 downvote or 5,000 upvotes and 4,999 downvotes.

Lets say a post has 200 upvotes. Before, you could see whether it was 250/50 upvote/downvote, making it a widely popular opinion, or whether it was 1000/800, meaning that it's quite controversial and there are people with emotional attachments to each side of the argument. Seeing the upvote/downvote counters was crucial to assessing Reddit's reaction to a particular comment, which is then helpful when it comes to figuring out what the consensus is on any particular topic. You might say to yourself that it doesn't matter, but I've found a pretty strong correlation in my experience between how a community deals with an issue that it has and the number of upvotes/downvotes given for any particular comment on the issue.

For example, in the NFL subreddit there's a controversial topic at hand, the U.S patent office throwing away the Redskins trademark for being offensive to Native Americans. Now, this comment was made, and currently has 300 upvotes. But what does that mean? I happen to know that before UV/DV counters was disabled, it had about 1100 upvotes and 800 downvotes. That means it's a highly controversial post that many, many people felt strongly enough about to break reddiquette and downvote it. That's useful information to know. Now, should that post be made today, we have no idea how controversial that post is, and how strongly people feel about the issue. That's an important dimension of reddit for me that is now gone for what seems like no reason at all.

Hope that helps.

Yes it does. That was a perfect explanation. Cheers very much.

You know the previous upvote/down vote counts weren't accurate right? The only number that was accurate was the total vote count

The exact numbers don't matter, what does matter is a rough approximation of how many people cared enough to vote.

The vote fuzzing definitely made the counts on the front page pretty much useless, but I think where people actually care about it is on smaller subs, new posts, and comments, where it will now be difficult to tell how many people have voted on something. People want to know if their comment with 5 points was just upvoted by 5 people or if 20 people upvoted and 15 people downvoted. I'm not exactly up in arms about this - it doesn't make or break reddit for me, but it was kind of entertaining to see, so I sort of wish there was some kind of middle ground where maybe you could see votes up until the point of fuzzing, or it would say a post has >50 or >100 votes, or something like that.

EDIT: Typo

[–]Shiroi_Kage 3 ポイント4 ポイント

Simply because if a comment is at -2 you would be able to know whether it's a 98/100 or just 1/3

As a mobile user I'm indifferent, but what I seem to be hearing is the moderation of certain sub especially smaller, more community based subs will be harder.

[–]Slevo 16

Because no matter how hard they joke about it just being imaginary internet points, hardcore redditors who make the most noise are people who take karma way too seriously

For some it's the meaning of life.

[–]go_ahead_downvote_me 1 ポイント2 ポイント

it's reddit. that should answer a lot of that question

It's not about that, it's about the counts that RES provides for comments. Those were actually quite useful.

/u/dizekat explains it well here.

or here:

"Previously, they see, say, +18 -20 and think - there is something that 17 people support, so they stop a little and ponder what that might be. Now it's -2 , less thinking happening.

It's even worse with positively voted posts, though. Say, there's a wrong explanation of something, which is utterly commonplace. Currently, it can be +50 -20 , which alerts people to significant disagreement and makes them ponder correctness of what was posted. It'll be +30 now. Again, less thinking happening, pure circlejerk.

I'm pretty sure the increase in the level of circlejerk is why that change was implemented in the first place. Single number creates perception of unity, which is good for profits. Positive and negative number makes it clear that there's no unity, no fascio. Two numbers make you think of disagreement."

[–]Cumondown 5

I found that particularly useful in subs answering questions about stuff I'm totally ignorant of. If the top comment on some question about chemistry is ( 500 | 450) I'm sure as fuck gonna be a lot more skeptical of the accuracy of the answer than if it was ( 55 | 5 ). But now it'll just say +50.

Isn't that why the "best" comment rating was added?

It uses a lower bound score of a wilson interval so you can order based on the relative amount and percentage of up vs downvotes.

They debuted the feature in 2009 in a blog post here:

http://www.redditblog.com/2009/10/reddits-new-comment-sorting-system.html

I assume even though they don't let end users see the up/down vote counts, they still take it into account on the back end before ordering the comments.

Because it drops the quality of comments. A comment with 500 upvotes and 499 downvotes will appear the same as a post that has no upvotes or downvotes.

People are freaking out because with the change you can no longer tell how many people have voted. People mostly just want it back for the comments (I think). People using RES could see how many upvotes and downvotes each comment had.

For instance a comment has 5 points. Before the change we could see it had 5 points because 10 upvotes and 5 downvotes for example.

With the new system a comment could have 5 points because 5 people upvoted it and 0 people have downvoted it or because 1 million people upvoted it and 999,995 people downvoted it. There's no differentiation.

I care because if a controversial topic has -4 votes I don't know whether it's (0|4) or (10|14).

Edit: I derped really badly.

0 up votes and 7 down votes gives you a score of -4 down votes?

I have a feeling the numbers didn't mean much to someone with your math skills anyways.

[–]Corruptionss 27

Not to mention they weren't even accurate. The upvotes and downvotes were fuzzed and didn't represent the total number of upvotes and downvotes.

The only utility of it was to determine if anybody really read your post. There were a couple of occasions where I had maybe 3 net votes but had like 19 upvotes and 16 downvotes. If I saw 3 netvotes, I'd probably think, "well shit no one really read what I posted." If I saw 19 upvotes and 16 downvotes, I'd think, "I'm not sure if I am a good person or not"

[–]roofied_elephant 17 ポイント18 ポイント

With posts you can calculate it using the % given, but for comments you can't. And there's a huge difference between a (5|0) comment and a (60|-55) comment.

[–]Corruptionss 11

Absolutely. One makes me feel like I am ignored, the other makes me feel like I am borderline scum of the earth

[–]Daniel_Is_I 1 ポイント2 ポイント

It's just a stupid change for no reason.

Hell, you can still get the upvote/downvote ratio on posts. For example, if it's at 259 up and 88% people upvoted it, then that means there were ~295 votes and 36 of those were downvotes.

Why are so many people that don't mind the change thinking that those that do mind the change are upset about the post ratio??? It's all about the comment ratio that people are upset about. Let me give you an example of the importance of the ratio in a comment:

-40|+48 = +8
-1||+8 = +7

The first one has a higher net vote but yet, it's highly controversial. The second one is not controversial but just doesn't have enough views/votes. Without the breakdown, you don't know how they are being received.

I'm more pissed that I can't see upvotes and downvotes for my comments with RES.

I think it's more about the comment counters than the thread counters.

You are misunderstanding. You WILL see upvotes. The difference is now you will see 1 Point on posts with 50/49 and 1/0 votes. See the issue?

[–]Olyvyr 34

It eliminated information - information that many redditors (including myself... somewhat) find useful.

Yes, the issue is that you care too much about imaginary internet points.

[–]Nympha 73

They're not imaginary, but they are pointless.

Points are pointless...?

[–]Uneducated_Actualist 6 ポイント7 ポイント

Touché, but can you see why kids love cinnamon toast crunch?

You got it reversed.

I want to see how controversial a topic is, fuck me right?

Why did they remove it anyway? It was pretty useful IMO.

Basically.

It's not about that. If there is a comment at 2500+ and 2505- it will now only show up as -5. I may just want to read a controversial comment, but will skip over it cause it might be a shitty opinion/troll.

[–]Sciaj 25

Those "imaginary points" represent something real. It's useful to know if a comment is controversial or not - the response I have to a comment is heavily influenced by the distribution of upvotes and downvotes.

[–]Villerv 2

The problem is that there is no way of knowing if something is controversial or just not read. The problem is not really apparent in major subreddits, but the small ones might be relying on this info in many cases. One subreddit that have been mentioned is /r/photoshopbattles that counts upvotes. No more of that now..

It's not the ego that speaks for many, some just want to know when they read.

Like someone having a common misconception about something specific and unknowingly giving false advice about it. Other people who see it and have the same misconception upvote it. Eventually others who know better downvote it. In the previous system, this comment, say, at a +2 after all is said and done, you could see that it was controversial and quickly realize that you might need to do some more research if you had the same misconception as the OP. In the new system, it just seems like maybe people haven't really looked at it.

[–]Sciaj 2

He still gets the same amount of comment karma. The point now is that he's unable to see the total upvotes and downvotes.

[–]poo_is_hilarious 3 ポイント4 ポイント

As do I.

Reddit News works better IMHO.

I started noticing posts with (0|0) and then RES made it apparent what was going on. Now Reddit News is showing the score in the upvote section (instead of the actual number of upvotes) and the downvotes section always displays 0.

Same in Sync, it looks to be a universal thing.

I'm with Flow (reddit app on Android) and I see the correct upvote count, but 0 for all downvotes

I'll take advantage of the relatively small number of comments to say this:

  • Reddit provided roughly fake numbers of up/downvotes
  • The more popular a post, the more fake the numbers (to the point they didn't mean anything)
  • Redditmen removed the fake number completely
  • People unhappy because they can't tell difference between [10|0] and [1000|990].

They could just give the smoothed percentage of upvote and the total number of vote. It would allow for easier fuziness (only one number to fudge) while giving both the popularity AND the liking ratio, but oh well.

Threads have "94% like it", but comments don't. Maybe they'll add that in the future.

I think the reason for removing it was that reddit was worried that people were far more concerned with the numbers than providing insightful comments.

Which judging from the amount of people outraged over it, reddit was right.

It was also really useful for the contests that a lot of the smaller subreddits run.

There was a corner case of usefulness, as the person above me mentioned, like knowing if a comment was controversial or just not popular. But, yeah, people care about getting downvotes too much.

It has nothing to do with getting downvotes.

Nobody in this tree seems to actually he interested in what the problem is.

Votes tell you your shit is getting read. That is the entire reason why people post, so others read them.

If you have 50 upvotes and 50 downvotes, it now looks exactly the same as if you had 1 downvote and 1 upvote.

That gives you no way to tell A) If people read your comment and B) if many people disagreed.

Those pieces of information are vital, and they have nothing to do with being obsessed with karma.

This exactly. I could care less about getting the karma but when I make a post, which I don't really do all too often, I like to at least know that its being read and that I'm not 'wasting my breath'.

[–]Ranzera 6

There's also knowing when a thread is getting brigaded.

[–]Oil_Lobbyist_ 3 ポイント4 ポイント

I'm really annoyed by the words "Like it". You don't have to like something to upvote it or not like something to downvote it. Infact that form of voting is discouraged according to the Reddit admins own rules(I under stand the community doesn't normally use it according to the rules). There have been a ton of threads that get upvoted but all the comments are in disagreement or dislike the post.

[–]REDDIT_GOLD_SANTA 5 ポイント6 ポイント

Over in /r/hockey we keep the RES score (10|3) hidden and it was never an issue.

I thought it was magic but in reality it was just RES

Calm down people. I am sure Reddit will roll out a way for you to pay to get it back.

I'm still a little lost, despite the explanations I've read.

Do you use RES? If not it doesn't really matter to you.

The phrase vocal minority comes to mind. The amount of RES users is a tiny percentage of total reddit users.

Then it should still be a feature since it doesn't matter to most people anyway.

That small percentage is largely Reddit's core user base. The ones who submit and comment the best and most. The majority are the casuals that merely browse and maybe rarely up/down vote. That core community is what makes reddit as good as it is. Without them, reddit would loose the majority of it's quality content. That 10% core contributes more to the site and its success than the other 90% ever did.

100% this. The people that go as far as to use RES are the redditors that frequent this site so often that they would hugely benefit from the efficiencies provided by RES. They are the ones that contribute the most and thus are most vocal about changes.

And for all the non-RES users saying "who the fuck cares" and whatnot, just because something doesn't pertain to you doesn't automatically make it a trivial and worthless matter.

Or anyone not using RES.

Myself included.

I used RES for a few months, and deleted it and haven't missed the little counter since.

I disabled the vote counter, but find the filter function priceless.

What the fuck is res?

RES is the Reddit Enhancement Suite. You really should get the Reddit Enhancement Suite, because Reddit Enhancement Suite is awesome.

Reddit Enhancement Suite!

Couple RES with HoverZoom and reddit becomes a much much more pleasant experience.

[–]All_Hail_Dionysus 7 ポイント8 ポイント

It was found out a few months ago that HoverZoom had malware or something looking at what we look at for other companies' purposes. I do miss it though.

you can replace hover zoom with imagus , it's supposed to be malware free

Reddit enhancement suite. Google it for a full list of functions

Reddit Enhancement Suite. It adds a bunch of useful features that Reddit should add by default, like infinite scrolling of the thread lists and image auto-loads.

Reddit Enhancement Suite. An addon.

It's very useful for people who have slow internet since it makes it so you can open images in the reddit tab. Also gives Night Mode, a better messaging notification, etc. It's very useful.

I am upvoting this post.

That's what I'm doing now. I now tell people that I'm upvoting or downvoting posts and comments. That way, we can tell if a controversial post has received downvotes or upvotes and at least in some quantifiable way.
