You know what annoys me more than the thread count.... the personal comment count - that you could see through RES - it was small, but when i saw like 9 upvotes 12 downvotes.... i would be like Hey at least 9 people agree with my shitty opinion....

now i'm going to see like -3 points.... and be like.... well i guess people just hate me....

If it were me, get rid of the the thread ones (they were the most fluffed anyway), but keep the comment ones.... at the very least you could give a percentage to RES.... like the thread comment.... that way i will know approximately how vast the dislike for my shitty opinions is.

From the Reddiquette,

Vote. If you think something contributes to conversation, upvote it. If you think it does not contribute to the subreddit it is posted in or is off-topic in a particular community, downvote it.

I guess they should probably change the rules on that one. Granted people haven't been using it like that for a long time. Now they are at least reinforcing the way it is used.

I've only ever seen downvotes used for "you have an unpopular opinion and we're going to punish you for it."

Or, "Your post is thoughtful, well-written and on-topic, but I disagree with you."

I liked that when I saw 30|32 it felt that my comment was something people thought was worth discussing...I always thought I would rather write a 20|23 comment which caused people to think and disagree with than a 100|5 comment.

Don't get me wrong, I still like the useless internet points but making a difference by making people think is always great!

But what's a whole lot worse is when you see something like 5|45 but nobody actually writing out a reason why they disagree with your point. What the hell are you supposed to do with that?

not to mention the slight possibility that those 45 people are a bunch of shiteaters.

They're not supposed to be agree/disagree buttons!

[–]Alinosburns 3

Depends on the subreddit really.

For some of the smaller ones it can still be a useful metric.

100% of people like this with a 5-0 vote isn't really useful compared to 33% like this with a 1-2 vote or a 33-66 vote

Difference of scale determines how seen your post was. Which changes the value of it's rating.

a post with low votes means it wasn't seen or discussed. One with higher votes has a potential increase.

And the fact is whether they are supposed to be agree/disagree buttons. They are used that way.

...You know what's bad? I completely agreed with your opinion and was moving to upvote you, but before I did it, my eyes jerked just a bit right and saw (?|?).

I couldn't help but chuckle.

isnt this the reason why it was removed?

if you are being influenced by other peoples' opinions, displaying groupthink would be a detriment to what reddit stands for right?

[–]Eupho 50

How does this way not make groupthink worse? The old way at least you could see your opinion was controversial. Now you only see the hive minds opinion.

Yea, that's why I chuckled.

[–]Karellacan 20

I feel like they just didn't consider how this would impact comments, since the %like is a somewhat acceptable replacement for the counter on threads, but there isn't anything to replace the lost information for comments.

At least this is what I am going to choose to believe, because if I find out that they knowingly ruined the RES comment count for no reason I'm going to need to find an anger management subreddit.

[–]Orval 15

Every day the first time I got on Reddit each day I would click my name at the top and see how much people agreed or disagreed with whatever I said the night before.

Was I perceived as a dick? Did a ton of people see it or just a few?

Now I have no idea. I'm OK with the main page stuff being hidden, whatever. The site still runs the same, with a little less hivemind voting.

But now I dunno if people like me :(

The count for threads has been improved for everyone. It is less information at a glance, but it is more correct information (which can give more information with a simple calculation).

For comments with regards to RES users, it's definitely worse. For those that didn't use RES, there's no difference.

I would guess that the people using RES are the most active and important contingent of reddit users. I would be willing to bet a lot of money that the vast majority of those who buy reddit gold, for instance, are the ones who use RES. Anecdotally, I've bought 2+ years worth of reddit gold and am very unhappy with the change.

[–]el_californio 4 ポイント5 ポイント

I disagree with your point..... or do I? I may have upvoted you or downvoted you, you'll NEVER know

[–]Barflad 10

It's a addon for chrome (don't know if firefox yet) called RES; which is short for something that I can't be assed to look up for you.

RES = Reddit Enhancement Suite.

Well, all this time I'd assume it's common knowledge, but the upvotes/downvotes were heavily messed with anyway, to make it harder to bot. So that -3 comment could have actually been 1/4 up/down.

This only kicked in after somewhere between 20 and 50 votes, so this will hugely affect smaller subreddits.

[–]Ginger-Nerd 2

Which is exactly my point. that -3 could have also been 100/103 up/down

A percentage could potentially bridge this problem however 49% like this (or whatever)

I wasent around during diggs hayday. Please explain what had happened.

Digg used to be most popular Internet aggregator, then some formatting changes happened and the masses flocked to reddit, which is where most of the user today came from

I remember those days. Digg had a huge user base, however from what I recall there was a lot of internal politics going on. I believe the founder of Digg left, or gave up on it, or something, and someone else took over, changes were made, and people freaked out and left.

I stuck around because I had this hatred of Reddit at the time, I didn't like the layout, plus my experience with Reddit users was that every time a Digg article was posted, guaranteed, there was a post by a Reddit user that said "this was posted on Reddit two days ago".

Anyways, Digg announced that they were doing this huge makeover, and everything was going to be awesome.

When the new site launched, in order to log in, you had to connect your account to facebook. They claimed that this was in order to stop multiple accounts from the same person. I said fuck this! and never looked back.

After the first (and largest) exodus from Digg, you could clearly see the difference. Threads used to have 5,000 comments on some of them. Now threads were lucky to break 500 comments. In the hey day, there were always these ascii picts in their messages, like Pedo Bear, Face palm picard, among others. Those all seemed to disappear over night.

Digg 4, which is what the "upgrade" was called, let corporations submit articles and basically forced users to choose the top twenty corporations they would like to get direct content from instead of regular people posting things. Basically Digg sold out and it was blatant.

Not only that - but articles became auto-posted from corporations/websites too. Digg literally removed the ability of users to post articles from websites they liked and flooded them with what was essentially an RSS feed.

I remember looking through Reddit before the Digg downfall and thinking this was a very weird place.

I still think that.

Reddit used to be the smaller, "smarter" version of digg. Then it basically became 4chan with upvotes.

That was the primary trigger for the exodus. But there were other things going on. The new revamp also stuffed the ranking algorithm somehow. The content thrown in front of you went from relevant and good, to just junk overnight. Think reddit's home page content being fed from /r/new. Low vote count and all.

Couple all that with a growing dissatisfaction with the system being geared so obviously towards power users, and people just had enough. The deluge was unheard of.

I'm having digg flashbacks.

why don't they add the option for either counter or %

Because you (or an addon) could grab both points and percentage and calculate the actual up and down votes

Make it accurate within a couple percentage points then. We get the info and the votes are still fuzzed, and everyone is happy.

Where exactly is the new "% like it" displayed? I don't see it.

Oh wait, thats just here.

[–]Bilgistic 73

It's a stupid move but removing the counters which display to the users is a little different than removing the vote as a whole.

I feel like I'm cheating but I'm on mobile and I still have the counter

[–]Akasirus 37

Not the net upvotes part but if you used RES you used to be able to something like +6 (24|18) where you had 24 upvotes and 18 downvotes. Now you can only see the +6. But if you didn't use RES then the comment display is the same.

[–]Scientific_Anarchist 34 ポイント35 ポイント

Now it's just +6 (?|?). I'm so extremely mildly bugged by this.

We don't want to turn it off, we want it to work again. :-)

[–]Mike_Litorus22 5 ポイント6 ポイント

Why did they remove the counters??? someone please tell me

Not just that, but the explanation doesn't hold water. If so many of the downvotes are bogus, why are they still used to pull down your upvotes. If my reddit posting has 2000 and 55% liking it, ?wouldn't fixing to be 90% bump up the upvotes to 3800+? Something doesn't jive.

Vote fuzzing means that 90% of the real votes were upvotes and 10% were downvotes, but it added extra votes such that the net score was the same but the percentage approached 50%. Now you can't see the fuzzed votes, just the net score, but the effect is exactly the same. Honestly, they should've changed this a long time ago because it seems like having access to the fuzzed numbers in RES confused everyone into thinking those were the real values. The net score is the only value that says anything accurate anyway, removing the upvote/downvote count just means people won't be continually thinking those are the real numbers.

The problem here is we can't see 'controversial' comments by looking at the amount of upvotes and downvotes it has. My +1 comment would either be 100/-99 or it could have been ignored with +1/0.

Personally the vote fuzzing in thread submissions were far worse than comments. You see AMAs of people worried that people dislike them because it has 750 downvotes with 1500 upvotes.

And besides, who complained Reddit was a negative site over the vote fuzzing counter?? That's the last reason I would think of. Very unnecessary update.

What about the comments?

What about them? The net score is the only thing that's ever been accurate on comments, the values RES showed were just fuzzed anyway. I turned that option off years ago since it's just useless data that gives you the illusion of knowledge. I'm far happier just seeing the net score on comments.

Source?

[–]Itchysolid 6

What? Anything below 100 was basically true. Even over 100 it was a pretty good approximation.

This shits on smaller subs with low vote counts, and doesn't do shit to large subs where votes were already being fuzzed.

Exactly. Everyone fussing about the counters being gone seems to be clueless to the fact that the counters were not real, it was just artificially inflated numbers that didn't accurately portray the amount of votes on a thread.

[–]Itchysolid 18

Except it only fuzzes when posts/comments get a large amount of votes. On smaller subs you'd barely ever see vote fuzzing.

It's annoying if you like to look at smaller subreddits where the votes only range from 4-8 up votes so the results aren't fluffed up yet. I don't care much for the 4300 | 2300 pun in /r/askreddit.

[–]Fiktiv 2

This applies to comments too, yes?

Yeah. Literally all that's been taken away was an illusion of information that was never there to start with. People will fuss for a few days and move on, I expect. I turned that option off in RES years ago and browse tons on AlienBlue which only shows net score, and never once have I felt like my experience was hindered by it.

[–]Killedonfriday 4

I still don't know what the hell this is all about. I still see up and downvotes on posts and for individual users...what else is there?

Something I made earlier today. Hopefully someone will program it into RES. Edit: Never-mind, I did not know that comments don't get a percentage.

function getVotes(karma,percentage) {
    karma_percentage = percentage - (1-percentage);
    overall_votes = karma / karma_percentage;
    upvotes = Math.round(overall_votes * percentage);
    downvotes = Math.round(overall_votes * (1-percentage));
    return {
        "upvotes" : upvotes,
        "downvotes" : downvotes
    };
}

Sadly it only works with links.

Reddit just wanted to pull a Disqus and take away the downvotes... Can't help that they are trying to fit in.

Same with Youtube.

And we see how well that works... Whenever a post gets to the top of /r/videos there is that one guy who always posts stupid shit. Just make vote brigading and ads easier to do.

[–]sargENT_shart 10 ポイント11 ポイント

Comment count. I don't give a fuck about post counts, I'm here for the comments.

I have no idea what all the fuss is about. I don't see any difference in the site at all. What am I missing?

If you don't already know whats going on then don't bother looking into it. Its only a hot button issue for those who immediately noticed it.

So I'm on moble. What happened??

They're removing the details on how many up/downvotes there are so all you see is a total (up - down) and a percentage as well for submissions.

http://www.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/28hjga/reddit_changes_individual_updown_vote_counts_no/

Then loads of people are acting like reddit kicked their puppy.

Thanks! It's odd they are making this change when this is what most like about this site (being able to downvote on other websites would be much appreciated). But I likely wouldn't have noticed if everyone wasn't making a stink about it.

No worries, it's hard to figure out what's actually happening with all the vitriol.

You can still downvote, the only difference is now you can't see exactly how many upvotes vs downvotes there are, just the difference. For comments, this was only available when using RES and for large posts the figures weren't accurate anyway (and have now been replaced with a more accurate "X% like this")

not everything, I never looked at the vote count before voting. I wish everybody would stop complaining about this for like a week.

[–]argv_minus_one 1 ポイント2 ポイント

Can someone explain it like I'm retard. I still see the orange numbers in the left which I assume are still up votes and the blue on the right wick are still down votes? Though now everyone's blue number is 0 and the orange number goes negative.

I'm on mobile so that may explain it

I browse reddit exclusively on my phone. Sucks butthole when loading gifs and videos, but today We mobile users reign.

Your personal interpretation of the quality of the content should influence your decision when voting, not what everyone else thinks. Relax.

Isn't part of reddit seeing how other people think of a subject? I can make my own decisions but that doesn't mean that I don't want to see what others think.

When I want to know what other people think I go read the comments. The upvotes/downvotes alone are meaningless.

[–]Blizzaldo 2

I want to REALLY know what other people think too. We're starting to sound like professional athletes with the way we talk because people can't adopt positions that aren't in total agreement with the majority.

I really liked those vote counters. Back to digg, anyone?

[–]Psythik 9

Not possible since digg removed the ability to comment.

I'd probably go back if they had a comment system.

I understand how bad the community feels (I don't support the decision, either) but let's not react like 9 year olds.

We all know how shitty Digg treated its users. By saying that we'll go back there, we do nothing but enhance the belief that you can take advantage of the internet communities without consequences.

Reddit made a mistake and we have to let them know, as the community of this site. The best thing we can do is to keep expressing our dislike about the change and not make it look like a knee-jerk reaction.

It will show if Reddit is really an improvement from Digg from their reaction.

Nah reddit is open source, let's make our own

To imgur!

You guys are asking for the percentage. Straight fucking no. We want the old upvote/downvote counter or we fucking leave. There is NO alternative.

I can still see the counters..? Go me?

Yeah, soon everybody will get participation trophies. OMG that's IT! yall are that generation!

EDIT: Sudden realization

they turned this into what it is, finally. a shitty "like or dislike" comment section.
