I've been sitting here all day wondering what had happened: was it the firefox update, the fact that I switched to "do not track", any of the add-ons I installed today ...

Thanks for clearing that up for me, it was really gnawing at me.

I really don't know what is going on. Before I up/down vote all I see is (?|?). After I up/down vote I see a number saying either + or - points. Is this all we will be seeing from now on?

Seriously, I thought I had made an offensive comment or something and got banned. Never been banned for anything so I thought that was what happened...like a punishment or something.

[–]Metroidman 43

Why is it I can see the upvote counter just fine?

[–]Akasirus 35

For comments, there used to be data available that would show something like +12 (22|10) where 22 was the total up votes and 10 was the number of downvotes. Now only the net upvotes are available.

[–]Rise Shining Gundam!blaghart 62

To be fair that was roughly half the reason to get RES. The other half was the ability to open image links on the page.

Also changing the size of a pic

And infinity pages.

How do people still not understand this? They didn't take away the point counter, they removed the upvote/downvote count through RES. Read the announcement please.

Edit: Changed upvote counter to "point counter".

[–]Rise Shining Gundam!blaghart 47

They also removed the Up/down counters on posts, though for some reason they still left the % of people that like it. It seems bizarre to me, especially to combat people posting "why is this getting downvoted".

So technically you can calculate up/downvotes in your own.

Ex. A post has 1000 upvotes, indicating 80% like it. 1000/.8 = 1250.
Then that means it received 1250 votes, of which 1000 (80%) were upvotes and 250 downvotes, netting to it's current score of 1000.

[–]Rise Shining Gundam!blaghart 12

Yea, except that A) defeats their justification for removing it (since you can still tell that something has been downvoted, leading to the "why is this being downvoted?" comment they're trying to stop) and B) it doesn't apply to comments, which are far more numerous on reddit.

That's not true. They're still fuzzing the overall vote count. So even if 30,000 people have up voted, the upvote count will still show around 2000-3000. But they give an honest representation of the percentages.

But what if 0% like it?

percent scores aren't reported for comments, only submissions

[–]Sparkvoltage 5

Which is what my example related to. I used the word "post", which is used interchangeably with "submissions" on reddit.

that.....that sounds like work.

[–]Gharst 2

Your math isn't even right. 1000 upvotes and 250 downvotes is 750 points.

[–]Mudnart 5

Nope. Your math is missing that one downvote counteracts one upvote.

A page has zero karma if 50% or more of the votes are downvotes. Your example shows a page with 1000 karma and 80% that like it. 30% times 2 (80% liked minus 50% times 2) of the votes is represented in the 1000 karma.

100%*1000/60%=1666 total votes

80%*1666=1,332 total upvotes

20%*1666=333 total downvotes

I rounded since reddit's percentage is also rounded. Numbers are approximate.

I want to like this. But I really struggle with drunk math.

I'm sorry if this seems rash, but to me this is the first step of the slow year long death of reddit.

You think the end of one of the most popular websites on the planet will be because you can't see the number of people who voted yes or no on a topic?

Do you really think there is no change Reddit could make that would cause a mass exodus?

Digg lost half of its traffic in one year, and half of the remainder in the year after that. It's not that far fetched. Now I don't think this change will cause a mass exodus, and neither does spiderman. I think he's saying it's a start in that direction.

No, Spiderman doesn't think this will end Reddit, he clearly said

first step

Contributors like feedback. Reddit gave contributors new and better ways of getting feedback. Now they've taken it away.

Reddit wouldn't/won't be the first 'most popular website on the planet' to dethrone itself by pissing off the miniscule yet vital population of members that it forgets make it a site worth going to for the other 99% of its visitors.

[–]Psythik 3

my baconreader gave me counters, but now it just shows the vote difference in the upvote column and there's just a 0 in the downvote column

Vote counters have been useless especially for high scoring links/comments because of fuzzing, I rather not be lied to.

On the other hand, in small subs it's a little inconvenient but I've noticed fuzzing can occur on comments or posts with as few as 10 upvotes.

I think that reddit should show accurate vote counting until fuzzing occurs then hide it.

Instead of fixing the algorithm, they just hid the numbers. That's programmer thinking not something usable for the users.

Unpopular opinion here: it's going to change the attitude of the enter reddit community rather than go with the majority of opinions. For example if something has a high amount of upvotes it's more likely people will upvote it rather than think about the comment themselves.

In my opinion this is a good way to evolve the reddit community into a more intelligible one.

EDIT: OK I can see what a lot of you are getting at. You can still see how many upvotes or down votes people get and the? /? Wouldn't change that regardless. This is more about controversy. You can put your pitchforks down plz.

But a high amount of karma (which is still visible) innately has a lot of upvotes. I don't really get how this is any different regarding what you're saying. If something has positive I arma, then more people voted for it. Actually, the percentages will actually make it even more apparent how many people up voted vs down voted as far as comparing the two go and majority.

[–]I <3 Muffin Puffinwhubbard 24

Exactly. If anything, this will raise more questions. There is a fucking massive difference between a post with 500|475 and a post with 25|0, I don't understand why the admins don't get this.

My only issue is just that I like to know how many people have weighed in on comments. Like I got crushed for a comment I made earlier, but want to know if 100 people upvoted and 180 downvoted, or if it was just every one of the 80 people who saw it hated it. Even if the count is imperfect, it's nice to roughly see the traffic on it.

What the fuck are you talking about? I can still see the difference in the visible score. The top comments will still be at the top. The people who vote with the heard will still upvote the top comments.

The difference now is that a comment with a 1 score could be (1|0) or (36|35). Those are the comments which catch my attention and I read carefully to make my decision.

If you want to see those comments you should try out the controversial setting.

That only works for the initial comments. I've you reddited for longer than 5 minutes, you know that the comment section is about the subsequent discussion not just the initial comment. I can't sort main comments by top and then 2nd or 3rd tier comments by controversial.

All that aside, I still can't tell exactly how controversial something is. A controversial comment in /r/bassfishing could be (4|5) where as an /r/askreddit controversial comment could be (37|52). Those scores would just show as -1 and -15 respectively. You can't derive anything from total score.

Touché, have a ?

I mean, I knew how many people cared about their karma and being accepted by the 'community' more than the content but this whining and outrage is hilarious.

"But how will I know if I have 495 downvotes and 500 upvotes or just 5 upvotes?" Who cares? Will you change yourself just to get more upvotes or less downvotes for a small demographic of anonymous strangers on a website? Apparently so.

[–]Frekavichk 14

Okay, so why is this good?

Personally, I like to know, especially in smaller subs, whether my comment was taken mostly positively or if it was pretty controversial.

+5 could be 15/10 or 5/0. One says people are pretty split on the issue, another says that the ones voting are in agreement that it is a good comment.

It's not about "changing yourself." Sometimes it's nice to know how many people agree or disagree with your post, particularly in discussion-based subreddits. It doesn't matter, none of this shit does. But if it's not broke, why fix it?

It matters. Posts with 5 | 0 probably didn't resonate with a lot of people while a 500 | 495 both resonated and caused discussion. This can be helpful when working in small subreddits where seeing large numbers of downvotes usually means trolls/brigades. Now it becomes almost impossible to tell if it was just a neglected comment, or one targeted by others.

That's so weird that people just upvote every post. I never upvote unless something's really good or really clever, and never downvote unless something is just completely stupid or erroneous.

Do most people go through upvoting every comment? Am I doing it wrong?

It won't do that at all. The point total is still visible and comments with a higher score are still going to be at the top. All it does is remove the ability to tell if a comment has a low score because it's controversial (has an equal number of upvotes and downvotes) or because it just hasn't been voted on at all.

I was debating re-installing RES. Thank you for saving me the 5 clicks.

I'd like them back too

Why the hell does it matter? The numbers were meaningless anyways since they were fuzzed.

Actually, it's going to completely destroy voting in subreddits like /r/photoshopbattles, where they only take into account positive upvotes to determine a winner. Now people can be dicks and downvote a submission to have it lose.

Contest Mode hasn't been changed, and really should be used universally for polls like that (I don't browse photoshopbattles, but they should take a look at it) because it displays entries randomly rather than in sorted order.

[–]Evolutioneer 3

I thought it was random so everyone had a fair chance of being at the top for times when a really great entry exists but took time and would otherwise have to compete with the already established top post.

Nope, totally random

EDIT: on second read I think your comment wasn't debating if Contest Mode was random, but rather why it was put into effect in the first place. For that, I don't know. I just know how it works.

[–]Frekavichk 1

Actually, no. Fuzzing only actually started to make things veer from fact after like 100 points.

Otherwise, it was close enough to the real vote count that it didn't matter. This is going to fuck over small subs big time.

.

Also, why the fuck would you try and counter people's problems with a change with 'Why does it matter?'

You should be asking "What positive aspects does this change have?" because if reddit keeps changing things for the sake of change, they are going to go the way of digg very soon.

It will be much easier to inject paid for posts into the front page if there are no vote counters I would think.

Yeah, but you could still see the relative amounts of upvotes vs. downvotes. You could see if a comment was really popular or if it was relatively controversial. A comment with a score of 20 could have a 21/1 vote ratio or 200/180 vote ratio. That's a pretty big difference.

[–]ersatz_cats 6 ポイント7 ポイント

Tangentially related, just yesterday my housemates were talking about "The most downvoted comment in Reddit history (allegedly)", Karmanaut's weak explanation of why the Bad Luck Brian AMA was deleted. I looked it up, left it open, and just now realized I still had that tab open showing the total votes, whereas opening the tab now just shows the final score. So, if the admins don't reverse this change, this could be the last screencap of it (and yes, I did try to downvote him, lol).

Except that downvote count is fudged. It's not real, which is one of the motivating reasons to remove these metrics entirely from view. I just hope they replace it with something that makes more sense for everyone.

The sad thing is that they won't change it unless people keep complaining. It's like the puffin ban. Redditors bitched and moaned about the puffin ban for about 3 days but nothing was ever done about it because people just stopped caring.

What if I told you

It's only because people were abusing the system to try to get their spam to the frontpage?

Where did you read that?

Seriously. What spam was on the front page? I assume he means memes that popular users have posted, but that won't change

[–]Psythik 3

I don't care that they removed the submission up/down count. The fact that they removed the count for comments as well is what is getting reddit up in arms. There was literally no reason to do this as comments rarely affect a post's front page status.

It's always been believed that comment activity is factored into whether or not a submission makes the frontpage.

I'd venture a guess and say that by the fact that the admins disabled it for comments, too, that it was an accurate assessment all along.

[–]Roller_ball 6 ポイント7 ポイント

Ugh, why does it seem like the front page is constantly the shit that ruins everything for everyone?

I find it far more likely that it's because people were mass downvoting sponsored posts, and the sponsors didn't like that too much. Just a guess.

They still exist on "reddit is fun"

This isn't some CSS trick. The actual website is not releasing that info to the user. Unless an app is hacking into Reddit servers, then there exists no way for it to have those numbers.

[–]Aflimacon 6

[–]Guitello 1

I thought it was my sketchy internet for some reason.

I don't know, remember when they removed the number of the links? That was pretty stupid too

I've only used this account since February, so no I don't remember.

The point is, ultra redditors can still calculate the number of upvotes and downvotes. Right now I see this post has got 1756 upvotes. And it also says that these are the 81% of the total voters who like it. So 100%-81%= 19%. And therefore 1756*1.19=2089.64~2090. 1756-2090=334. So 334 users have downvoted this post. RES developers can try this trick to remove the ?votes and ¿votes.

[–]Hrel 1

I actually really like it. Everyone still gets karma, I think. But even if they don't.

It removes karma as a motivating factor. Forcing people to upvote/downvote based on the quality of the post/comment instead of based on the bullshit people normally vote on. Like disagreeing with it. Or not liking the person. Or wanting the number to be even or odd. Or whatever other bullshit they use as excuses for bigotry.

[–]Broxxiga 5

I never knew people cared about the counters until they removed them, the more you know.

I've seen this comment so many times. The level of butthurt required to threaten the admins with their site going the way of the dinosaur because you can no longer see the up/down ratio on comments is extreme.

[–]Frekavichk 5

Sure, but this change shows the direction admins are taking this site in: more like facebook, less like what reddit should be.

Right? What a bunch of whining children.

[–]Cobaltsaber 5

I fully disagree. Or maybe I ignored you. We may never know....

[–]Grudgecrown 3

Go outside.

Jokes on you. I have reddit on my phone and can reddit in the park.

What makes it so stupid?

It makes it stupid because vote counts are useful in smaller subreddit comment sections. You can see what is controversial and in what way. Now a 1 score comment is indistinguishable from a (1|0) to a (22|21).

[–]Frekavichk 3

The inability to distinguish a low-upvoted comment that most people agree with to a high upvoted comment/high downvoted comment that is highly controversial.

Also, there is no upside to this change that I can see, so that should be enough to not change anything.

I sincerely hope this is reversed soon because it's ruining the reddit experience. Is it likely though?????????????

[–]Bommer-Sooner 7

No. The admins pretty much said they don't give a fuck what we say and unless we make it a giant issue for a long time they won't change it.

Well fuck you too admins.

[–]Ask_A_Sadist 1 ポイント2 ポイント

Does anybody even pay attention to the numbers? Honestly? I come here to occasionally blow breath out of my nose in a sign of amusement. You could have changed the counters to a random number generator 6 months ago and I'd never fucking notice.

Yes, the numbers matter a ton. Good momentum early on in a post is the difference between a post/comment being at the top or buried at the bottom. It also allowed for easy identification of controversial posts to allow discussion to spread.

The count still appears on mobile, what's all the fuss about?

This posts sucks, but I'll upvote anything that complains about this retarded action made by the Reddit administration.

Developer of http://reddit6.com - not sure why Reddit did this, they have the data and they should expose it. It's making more work for us just for the sake of making work.

sorry, what?

I use reddit on the app reddit is fun. . Will someone tell me dafuq is going on right now?

If you have RES you can't see the total upvotes and total downvotes separately.
which sucks.

What's RES. .

[–]Chief_Ironlung 0 ポイント1 ポイント

Maybe I don't understand...

I still see upvotes and downvotes.

Ok so is this something that mobile is unaffected by? Because I have no idea what you all are talking about.

I don't get this. Can someone explain how reddit fucked up?

I haven't noticed anything different with voting, am I just stuck in the past or something?
