You guys are pathetic. I come to reddit today hoping to find some decent content and everything's flooded with a bunch of crybabies bitching about how their imaginary internet points are being displayed. WHO THE HELL CARES?! The points aren't real. They don't mean anything. You're not winning or losing at anything. It's just a way that the site uses to organize the content and it is still serving that function. I'm sure Facebook will update their layout soon enough and everybody can bitch about how their lives have been ruined by that. Get a grip neckbeards!

First off: They're not imaginary. They're real, just electronic and with no apparent value (except for bitcoin and whatnot).

Second: The great thing about RES' up/downvote counter is that you can see how many people agree/disagree with you or something equivalent to that like funny/not funny. I don't think people are that pissed specifically because it's gone. Yes, we would like it to come back the way it was and such, but at least I, myself, is just pissed off at the admins suddenly taking that decision without consulting the users first.

As for you trying to find some decent content today: Technically you can view reddit as a community. Not like Steam, something else, but a real "village" community if you like. Some days people make jokes and talk about politics and stuff. And other days we talk about the fast spreading rumors in town. Also, when you miss content from the subs you usually go to, there is great motivation to go and find new subreddits that doesn't talk about what you hate.

I'm on alienblue and it says you have like -15, but I honestly agree with you. Nobody cares that you personally don't like something, and there is no reason that others should care that you dislike something. That's why Facebook doesn't have "dislike" buttons. Nobody gives a shit, if you like it, please express it but no one made you add someone as a friend, if you really feel the need to express your dislike to something at least comment and explain why rather than click a button and forget about it an hour later. If they keep posting things you don't like unfriend them. But a dislike button is pretty much a "your shit sucks" button and doesn't add anything constructive.

I think it's good that Reddit has a personal counter on your profile. Without that and the downvotes, there would be no penalty whatsoever for posting things that doesn't hit peoples interests. Though, I do agree with you on the fact that we just downvote and move on, I really do. Personally I try to take a look in the comments, and add my personal opinion and justification if it hasn't been said already, but take a good look at facebook again. There will always be those stupid things that people upvote (insert "1 like=1 respect 1 share=1 love" etc. post here). Yes, reddit has their own version of these things as well depending on your subjective opinion. Reposts might as well be a decent example as so many people hate them. We can comment all we want, but that won't change the fact that this post is rising to the top of the frontpage to annoy all the other users when they get their own early morning dose of reddit. Instead, we have the opportunity to do something and slow these posts down.

While this helps shape a great frontpage, it also helps shape a community. Getting downvotes and having your counter of comment karma go from 47 back to 2 is like a bitch slap to people with toxic opinions. Really, if we didn't have downvotes, I'm afraid we would probably already be overrun with children like Facebook is, where we will always have a hard time avoiding their posts.

You have a good point. And I'm not saying downvotes don't have a purpose, they absolutely do. They're not always bad as the like button isn't always good. I think the "1 million likes and I'll/we'll do X" is stupid and a misuse of an otherwise well intentioned function. The anonymity reddit provides is why there's a downvote button, it's to keep the spammers out. And keep subreddit content relevant to that subreddit. The counters just deducted from the experience.

Someone posts an amazing pic they took and there's like 10,000 down votes and 11 and a half thousand upvotes? You think "What ass downvotes this?" and then remember or someone tells you it's bots. Or the whole "who downvoted me?" thing in every comment thread now. Downvotes are still here but removal of counters sort of solves the issues I just described.

Yeah, forgot about the bots. And you're definitely right about that. While it feels awesome to know that almost everyone who voted on your comment agrees with you, people shouldn't feel cheated by seeing the bots downvoting. Though, you could maybe just do what you can to make it common knowledge that there are bots like that, you know. That would at least solve the problem to a further point than this solution has.

Down vote to HELL.

My lowest voted comment and I stand by it. Everyone whining about this is a moron with no life and not even the basic math skills to figure percentages. Every down vote I get from people this stupid and pathetic is a badge of honor. If you care this much about how fake internet points are displayed, you need to get a life.
