Appleが新型iMacをリリースした。エントリーマシンの位置付けで、一体型フルセットで価格は1099ドルからとなっている。これまでのものに比べて200ドル安い価格となっている。Intelの1.4GHz Core i5プロセッサーを搭載し、メモリは8GB、ハードディスク容量は500GBで、Intel HD Graphics 5000を積んでいる。
カスタマイズも受け付けており、1TBのHDDを搭載したり、あるいはFusionドライブ、ないし256GBのSSDフラッシュストレージに変更することができる。但し、最初から200ドル余計に支払えばquad-coreのIntelプロセッサーが搭載され、1TBのハードディスクにIntel Iris Proを積んだモデルが手に入る。またそちらのモデルならRAMを16GBにすることも可能だ。
すなわち今回発表されたモデルは、パフォーマンス面などで強化しようとするものではない。家庭内でちょっとした用途に使うためのモデルとして必要十分な機能を備えたモデルという位置付けなのだろう。新学期を迎えるシーズンに増加するであろうニーズに応じるためのモデルと言うことができるかもしれない。
